Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
//www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Thanks for sorting the new thread Lucinda.

Not feeling as awful today. Only vomited once on am empty stomach but that could be because I've eaten very little...banana and cucumber dipped in salt is keeping me going. OH took LO out for the morning so I was able to nap. I've bought myself some marmite (never had it in my life) as its rich in vitamin b6....fx I like it!!

How's everyone else doing?

Hi, can I join in? I'm floored by pregnancy sickness at the moment. The whole world feels likes its spinning. This has come on in the last few days and I'm only 6 weeks! This is my third pregnancy - luckily DH has taken the two little ones out today so that I can lie in bed with the electric blanket on - I'm also freezing freezing cold!
I'm surviving on mugs of chicken stock with a spoonful of marmite in at the moment. And that's about it!
I don't have the pelvic floor for being sick all the time!!
Has anyone been successful at getting medication? I went to a pharmacy yesterday, and they wouldn't sell me anything Sad

Hi reebok, same here only one vom today! Very nauseated so can only eat grapes. Liking the idea of your cucumber and banana concoction, might try that! Starting to feel the nausea rising again boo.

Hi mouthful really sorry to hear you're also suffering. Have you been to your GP? They should be able to prescribe you medication that could help. There are others on this thread that are much more expert than me. Really hope you get some help soon x

Thanks bugista I think I might have to. I'm pretty sure that my nausea is not as serious as it is for many - however, I can't stay lying down for the next 6 weeks (and that's if I'm lucky and it subsides then!)
It's really sucking the joy out of life for me, and I'm usually quite an upbeat person...

I feel so silly as just as I clicked to complete my post on hyperemesis gravidarum, I've just found this!

I literally don't feel human anymore (typing once again from the sofa with a bowl next to me :( ). Mine came on all of a sudden & I've lost a stone in just over a week.
Safe to say my little one has been nicknamed Damien Omen at the moment :(

Grapes were my thing bugista until last night. It's painful....you find something that works for a few days and then it stops. Dipping my finger in salt helps nausea subside for a few minutes. The marmite is disgusting!! Made me feel sicker!

Welcome mouthful. Sorry to hear you're so unwell. This thread is fab support. It's my 3rd time on it. 1st time when pregnant with dd, 2nd time in July but I mc and third time now. In terms of Meds, go to your gp and let them know how unwell you feel. They should put you on some meds, probably start off with cyclizine which is what I'm on. It's not helping much and in truth only helped when I had it through iv with dd. I have tried others too like metoclopramide and buccustom which haven't helped before in previous pregnancies.

Hi everyone. Welcome Shadow and Mouthful - sorry you're in need of this thread. You will find lots of helpful advice and understanding on here.

I'm feeling very weepy and down today. I think I'm just overtired but feeling quite despondent. Been working all weekend pretty much and missing my DCs too which I don't think is helping. Home now though. About to attempt a shower so wish me luck-bowl is at the ready!

What did they prescribe you, Luna and how long have you been taking them? Some need a few days to build up in the system.

If you see no improvement after a few days you need to go back to the doc. Not all the drugs work for everyone and there are a few different ones you can try. They tend to start you off on the milder stuff and go from there. It's important that you let them know if the tablets are not working for you.

Good luck with the shower Barmee. Hope you manage to get some rest after.
I am having another bad day. So gutted as I'm worried my tablets are not working properly anymore. I really don't want to end up back in the hospital.

I'm on Prochlorperazine at the moment. I'm giving them a couple more days but will be heading back if still to no avail :3

Thanks everyone - nice to find a welcoming place to talk Smile
I'm sorry everyone is feeling so terrible. It's really hard isn't it.
I'm going to give the GP a call in the morning.
I had pneumonia and probably also had HG alongside last time I was pregnant. The sickness was made worse by the antibiotics I had, and yet I wasn't prescribed any anti emetics until I went to hospital 2 stones lighter (down to 8.5 stone) and hadn't kept any food or water down for over 2 weeks. I do wonder if the fear of getting ill is making me feel worse!
I had a big glass of tonic water earlier and that was really nice...

I've had my first vom free day in a long time today (so far, touch wood) but still feel nauseous, feel like my belly is liquidy and burning, nice.
Doctors tomorrow to try for a non drowsy medication, my lovely gp retired so I'm a bit nervous I'll get someone completely unsympathetic.

You sound like you're having an awful time of it reebok, everyone does :( I've got an app on my phone counting down the weeks and days left, it's a horrible way to spend pregnancy and 26 weeks 4 days to go feels unmanageable sometimes.

Found out my SIL us pregnant with #2 today, so very pleased for her. Told all the family together, which was lovely. But barely managed to bite my tongue when she said "I didn't stop being sick every morning til 13 weeks" and my other SIL and MIL both comments about how difficult that must have. In fact, I didn't manage to bite my tongue and said "I've still not managed that!". Did manage to say it with a smile though!

Those who are new, make sure got you nag the pants off your doctors, don't downplay anything, tempting as it is, and if drugs aren't working make sure you tell them. Sometimes it's worth taking an advocate with you who can tell gp how much you're suffering. Stick around, plenty of support here.

Mop, my gp is very anti ondastaron (sp??)....I put it down to the costs. A few eats back MOH was kind enough to check my area to see if there were any hg friendly doctors but there weren't.

Mouthful flat you are calling your gp.

Peach glad to hear you had a vomit free day...I was convinced I was going to but unfortunately didn't work out that way.

Ealison, I wouldn't have been able to bite my tongue either.

Luna this thread is a lifeline. When I had hg with dd it was what got me through on my darkest days. It's the reason I'm back here again and pregnant with dc2.

Suffering with heartburn. Fell asleep with dd and woke up to hunger so had another banana as its all I can manage...this resulted in heartburn so I've been having ice lollies and Rennies but nothing works. Gaviscon is a big fat no as it will make me vom. Anyone know if you can get ranitidine over the counter?? Won't be able to get an app with gp for a while now.

One of the worst aspects of HG is the loneliness. It's not only the awful sickness and health worries, it's the isolation. Very few people understand unless they've been through it or know someone who has :(

reebok The projectile vomitting sounds so miserable. How are your ketones? (mouthful and luna, you can get Ketostix from any chemist. You pee on them and they detect ketones. usually, the darker the colour, the more ketones = the more dehydrated you are. This needs medical attention). Do go back to the doctor if they get bad.

mouthful Welcome. it sounds like you do need meds. this is a short rundown of what's usually prescribed:

cyclizine (old fashioned anti-histamine; can make you sleepy)
Metoclopramide (empties the stomach faster, less to upchuck)
Domperidone (similar)
Prochlorperazine (stemetil/Avomine/Buccastem) (works on your sense of balance; also a travel remedy; can be good for some people).
Promethazine (called Phenergan)(stronger old fashioned anti-histamine, also sleepy-making)
Ondansetron (the strongest and many people find the best, but causes constipation).

You do need to go to the doctor really for them. Can you take a look at the Goals of Treatment in the NICE guidelines that Mother Hen linked in the first post? The idea of medications is to enable you to lead as normal a life as possible. Can you print it out and take it to your doctor and ask for something?

shadowluna welcome too. Prochlorperazine is good, but maybe not enough on its own. Have you tried cyclizine? it's the first line med usually, not that strong but good to try at first.

wshing everyone a quiet night

Hello everyone I'm back got logged off and didn't have the energy to get back on again. I've not been on here for weeks. I'm now 20 weeks, still being sick. I was really hoping this time (3rd pregnancy) it might not keep going to the end. I just feel ill all the time I'm more sick in the morning and evening but just feel rubbish. I went to see the doctor again think I have tried pretty much every tablet going. It's difficult because when they ask how many times are you sick a day I've been saying once or twice as it has eased up. I suppose I should of said one or two spells of sickness when I can't stop vomiting until my stomach is empty. My work seem to think I should be better by now and have piled on the work. The doctor said he would sign me off but I would rather have a smaller work load and be able to keep going.
Wellcome to all the new people, it is all worth it in the end. Hope your managing to get by.

Hi all - well here I come with my first major TMI question. I was just lying in bed, heart pounding with nausea and came downstairs to be sick so as not to wake everyone else. I went to the loo and I have such terrible diarrhoea. Is this a normal part of being so sick? I feel like if I'd caught a bug, I'd be feeling better by now. I'm going to ring the GP first thing, but wondered if any of you had experienced this alongside pregnancy nausea?
I've had to let work down for tomorrow - I just can't face going in there like this. And I feel dishonest for not telling everyone that I'm pregnant - but it's such early days. I'm in a right pickle. Sad
