Steve Wright? Serious Jockin' ???

I've not posted here before but Steve Wright is driving me absolutely bonkers with his 'serious Jockin''. His regular programme is bad enough but now we are subjected to mentions every bloomin' day about his bloomin' Friday programme. Is this really the best the BBC can do for the Licence payer during prime-time listening?

I feel your pain OP. I don't listen to him because I value and enjoy my sanity but when I have, I've been stunned at how bad the show is. How on earth can he still be presenting such utter drivel in a prime time radio slot? He must have some serious dirt on some BBC big wig!

He's utter shit. I don't know anyone who enjoys his show. The "serious jockin' " thing seems to be somewhat tongue in cheek but he does it to death (I don't listen to it on purpose, it was on recently somewhere and I wasn't in control of the knob!). He just flogs any original idea to death, taking it from mediocrity to fucking maddening.

It's easy to turn over, I agree. However the real question here is whether he is now seriously past his best and clutching at any old straw to try to revive his flagging programme. The latest desperate attempt with the 'serious Jockin' is being flogged to death - more so than any other programme on radio 2

The thing is for every person like you dislikes him, there's probably a hundred more who think he's great. I went on the Big Quiz on his show a few years back and won a few prizes, so that probably clouds my judgement a bit, but I quite like him in a kind of he's like an annoying uncle singing over the ends of the songs kind of a way!!

whatsbehind, I get that there's horses for courses. I'm not a great Ken Bruce fan for example but I can understand why people enjoy his show.

Steve Wright on the other hand, I cannot understand how any sane person could find a single second of his show remotely bearable. So yeah, I'm not really a fan Smile

Lottaplanos - I totally get your point of view! And, to be honest, I don't listen to him as much as I used to, so maybe in small doses I don't mind him. I do enjoy his Love Songs show on Sundays though!
Mind you, I'm definitely going to agree to disagree on Ken Bruce - I don't know why but I think he's lovely - I think it might be the middle aged uncle syndrome again! I must have a thing for cheesy jokes and pop music quizzes (I also did Popmaster once too, so maybe, that's coloured my judgement!)
Hmm, if I admit to the triple badness of enjoying Tony Blackburn on Pick of the Pops does that make me incredibly sad? Or, even worse, far too old before my time!!

whatsbehind, you should be ashamed of yourself!!! Wink I do listen to his Sunday Love Songs sometimes while doing my cleaning, and have to try to hold back the vomit all the way through, but it kind of fits the bill for some mindless rubbish to listen to at that time of the week

There is no excuse for listening to Tony Blackburn. None.

I absolutely adore Graham Norton on Saturday mornings but now he's off on his summer hols for TEN WEEKS the jammy git and we're stuck with Craig Charles, who plays good music but seems to be of the Chris Evans heres-another-fascinating-story-about-my-wife-and-kids school of DJing. Sigh Hmm

I am now hanging my head in shame- I KNEW I should never have mentioned the Tony Blackburn thing! Oh dear! I feel as if I should listen to Radio One for a week as penance, but nothing I've done can be that bad that I need that kind of punishment, surely?!?

Oh god no, nothing deserves that kind of punishment Wink

YADNBU - DP likes to listen to Steve "I'm so wacky and out there, dontcha know" Wright on the way home from work, and it drives me up the wall. We've compromised on me putting up with the utter drivel every other day, and I get Smooth FM on my days Smile

I had to listen to Radio 1 for half an hour the other day, and it was possibly the worst half hour of this year so far. Complete tosh.

I too adore Graham Norton - my only complaint is that his holidays are far too long! Come back sooner Graham, we loooovvveee yoooouuuu!!! Grin

Love Steve, don't listen everyday but always smile when I hear his voice on the radio. In an ever changing world it's nice that some things remain the sameWink

I can't stand him, he makes me want to stab someone (preferably him).

My next car needs to have a DAB radio so I can listen to Radcliffe and Marconie instead.

I can't bear him either, he makes me cringe!!!!!

I no longer listen to him. It was just one more song ruined by him singing over it - made the red mist descend and that was it. It's so unprofessional - I just can't understand how anyone thinks that is ok. Confused

I love love love him. And Chris Evans.

They both make me feel joyful, because they celebrate the mundane.

The fact that I find myself coming round to Ken Bruce I find slightly disconcerting though...

Mundane - never was a word more appropriately used hooliodancer Smile

That gives me the rage too FarFrom. Steve Wright and Chris Evans are like long lost uncle and nephew or something. Wish they would get lost permanently

I can't bear Steve Wright, he just talks over every. single. bloody. song! He is totally inane and loves the sound of his own voice, drives me mad!
I also hate Chris Evans, he doesn't seem to live in the real world of 'not everyone is a millionaire' and loves himself.

Ken Bruce however, I adore. My radio day is Nick Grimshaw (I know, but he's better than the alternatives to me!) Ken Bruce, Jeremy Vine for an hour to wind myself up into a Daily Fail type froth, then over to Scott Mills, who is my favourite DJ of all. Then I put up with Greg James for an hour before switching back over to Simon Mayo.

And I'm praying that Chris Moyles comes back to some sort of radio soon.

'Jeremy Vine for an hour to wind myself up into a Daily Fail type froth'

Yes I do this too Smile Same reason I listen to LBC. Drives me demented but feels good at the same time, no idea why.

An MNer on another thread described the Jeremy Vine show as 'enjoyable in a depressing sort of way', which I think is just perfect and makes me smile whenever I think of it Smile

I always think SW sounds as if he's reading everything from a script that someone else has written. There's no spontaneity at all.

This drives me absolutely spare too! What does it even mean??? It sounds like the sort of stupid phrase Smashy and Nicey would have come up with in the 80's He is so dreadful anyway and this has just made it a million times worse! I like Radio 2 though and his music choices are great. I just wish there was less of him and his stupid entourage
