to feel that it's quite nitpicky here these days?

I've been a prolific poster on here for seven years under various names (Cod. Lavender. Moldies. Shitting elves. Pirates. That fucking bat.)

In the last few months I've been nipped at for so many things - posting style, choice of words, posting in the wrong place... And today I made a mistake and got pulled up quite rightly but then got pulled up again when i tried to rectify it and didn't do so exactly as one poster had suggested. Their point was valid but it kind of eclipses the issue in question.

I've always loved that Mumsnet posters don't allow inaccuracies and are quick to correct them. And I've always tried to take criticism on the chin. But it's been so frequent recently that I've committed minor infractions of unwritten rules, I feel pretty fed up and got at. In forums I've always tried to ignore or overlook errors - I suppose it's easier to ignore them than to go out of my way to correct people, and for what purpose? It feels like there are plain clothes posting police in here.

Has anyone else noticed this or have I randomly become hypersensitive?

No, it's not just you.

They just spoil it for everyone else.

AwfulMaureen · 07/01/2014 17:55

YANBU at all! I've been here under various names for about 5 years and it;s a nightmare lately!

You can't bloody cough without being accused of something. I actually told someone the other day "You're not in court you know!" they were going back SO ridiculously over the thread and using phrases like "Earlier in the thread you were seen to mention x and at that point you seemed unsure of the facts."

I mean really. It's spoiling the place!

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2014 17:55

Yes, but you have to not care and try and ignore it. I think a lot of posters default setting is 'have a go wherever possible'. makes them feel superior I think.

Look for the fun threads.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 07/01/2014 17:55

Youve always loved that MNers dont allow inaccuracies and are quick to correct them but not when its too often?

You cant have it both ways can you? Either you love it and accept thats how MN is or you dont like that it happens at all. No-one knows your specific limit for how often is too often for correcting posters. There are new posters here daily who wont be aware of your limit. What do you expect to happen from this post? People to not correct anyone ever or to continue to do what you love them doing? Because unless you post your personal limits on every thread ever then no-one is going to know when they are close to reaching your correction limit.

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2014 17:56

YY I have been quoted from previously in a thread to try and make me look silly. Hmm

PresidentServalan · 07/01/2014 17:56

No I saw your posts - you started a new thread because you were told to and then got flamed! Very harsh I thought.

Have some Flowers and Wine from me to cheer you up!

Greenfircone · 07/01/2014 17:56

Agreed. I rarely post because of this.

LEMoncehadacatcalledSANTA · 07/01/2014 17:58

I got a "telling off " from mnet because of my "agressive posting style" Hmm Well yes, if someone is being a cunt i'll tell them but generally i try to be nice

CaptainTripps · 07/01/2014 17:59

Ignore ignore ignore. Some people just aren't very nice on here. It says more about them than you.

PresidentServalan · 07/01/2014 18:00

And read the 'AIBU to think this is not on' thread if you want some light relief!

SherlustHolmes · 07/01/2014 18:00

Youre what I wanted from this that was to find out if IWBU or if others felt the same.

There are no limits. It's just been very frequent that I've been corrected recently. It genuinely used to be a much more accepting place. You would be rightly corrected for posting something incorrect, but even nethun-style abuse of punctuation was forgiven.

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2014 18:01

The 'Chinny Reckon' thread is funny too.

ButThereAgain · 07/01/2014 18:01

Yes. It is unbearably nitpicky here. It's the same as the mentality that prevails on much of Twitter and in swathes of blogs. People seem determined to use conversation as a means of demonstrating their superior rightness and the offensiveness or stupidity of eveyone they talk with. Its is odd and depressing. It has infected political discussion to the point where it often isn't worh bothering with.

Binkyridesagain · 07/01/2014 18:02

I apologise if you feel this way, my intention was not to nitpick, it was to help you get a discussion going on what is a very important issue.

PresidentServalan · 07/01/2014 18:02

Thread link here

SherlustHolmes · 07/01/2014 18:07

I feel properly relieved that most of you feel the same. I have been worrying that I've somehow changed into an offensive ignoramus without realising.

I love this place. It's genuinely made me a better person in many ways, and it's supported me through lots of stuff. It's educated me and opened my eyes to the experiences of others. I've been here long enough to feel a sort of pride/ownership/sense of belonging, despite never being one of the Royalty Wink I feel sad that my contributions, significant or whimsical, are shot down so much.

OP posts:
Bodypopper · 07/01/2014 18:08

Oh take no bloody notice op. Just because someone 'picks you up' on things doesn't make them right and you wrong!

I detest twats who pick up in grammar or spelling, I suggest they needed more head down the toilet and flushing treatment while at school. Grin

Ignore ignore

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 07/01/2014 18:08

MN has a far larger community than it had 7 years ago, even than it had 6 months ago to be fair, every aspect of it, the good and the bad, will have increased with all thise new posters. Thats how things go as they progress, also bear in mind the change in te economy and the effect that has had on the general day to day mood of people as a whole. If its only recently you have noticed it being more nitpicky then my guess is its just a dip and will peak again soon- maybe take a break from MN while that happens and come back when its a bit better or just stick to lighthearted threads.

SherlustHolmes · 07/01/2014 18:08

It's not just you Binky, please don't think that it is. That was a camel's back breaking, that's all.

OP posts:
bella411 · 07/01/2014 18:08

Yep, i got told putting n instead of the word meant posters couldn't understand my post and I was rude for doing so. If they can't undetsrand n for and then I don't really feel their opinion is worthwhile
Take it on the chin, some posters have nothin better to do. One person even went to the lengths of going through my old posts to berate me, sad, very sad!

Seriously, I'm one of the world's biggest and worst pedants. I do try hard to overlook spelling and punctuation errors though.

OP posts:
toastedteacake · 07/01/2014 18:12

Here you go, you'll be needing these.

AnnabelleLee · 07/01/2014 18:13

To be fair the n thing was really bloody annoying. I don't think asking for an attempt at actual words in a post is nitpicking at all. Surely its just basic manners to write in English?

Farrowandbawl · 07/01/2014 18:15

It's basic manners not to pull somone up on it - the only thing you end up doing is making yourself look like a petty pedantic arsehole with nothing better to do.
