I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

Another promising high definition camera in Alaska here, though annoyingly the time difference means it's sunny there at the mo. That's why the Icelandic cameras are better for British aurora fans.

Live European forecast site here, courtesy of RedToothBrush.

The Icelandic Met Office's aurora forecasts are available here.

there's a UK (ish) aurora alert on tonight, already seen pictures from North of Scotland.

DustBunnyFarmer · 10/11/2014 22:25

I think there are lights at Thingvellir now, but it's quite cloudy so the clouds are periodically showing a reddish or greenish glow.

Marking my place for tonight

Lovely photo of last night's aurora over Alaska at www.ronnmurrayphoto.com/NorthernLights-AuroraCamera/AlaskaAuroraCam-Images/ Weirdly, it looks like daylight now on the live camera feed, even though it is only 3.22am there and sunrise isn't until after 9am.

Marking my place too :)

I've just found a really good EU sky camera site which is geared up towards the aurora, which should help us to see the lights when it is also dark here in the UK: www.aurora-service.eu/sky-cameras/

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/11/2014 19:02

Oh well found!!!

DustBunnyFarmer · 11/11/2014 20:44

No aurora at the moment, but some Finns are outdoors with a bonfire going on the north Finland camera at the top of the page on the aurora-service.eu website I linked to earlier. It looks rather fun with all that snow and the fire going.

Something is lighting up the cloud cover at the Hekla webcam - looks like the lights might be gearing up (or the volcano?): www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/hekla/ Look at the top left corner of the attached image.

OK, I know it's just me here (echo chamber) but there is a glimpse of green through the cloud cover on the Finnish camera at www.aurora-service.eu/sky-cameras/ See screenshot attached - it refreshes every 2 mins.

Yay :)

Wish I could join them for their party!

DustBunnyFarmer · 11/11/2014 22:11

Aurora on the third camera down too - fisheye lens.

Pretty!

DustBunnyFarmer · 11/11/2014 22:12

And the Swedish one at Kiruna further down the page. Looks pretty much the same as the fisheye one above.

Happy days! The resolution on these cameras is way ahead of the Iceland Milacams.

I couldn't get all of the Kiruna one in a single screen grab, but you get the general idea.

Joining in for a bit of Aurora watching. Can I also add spaceweather which not only includes Aurora forecasts (and for the Southern Hemisphere as well) but often has amazing pictures people have taken, such as these here.

DustBunnyFarmer · 12/11/2014 14:00

Please do pull up a chair Gloria. I felt a bit like a solitary nerd in here last night.

OP posts:
DustBunnyFarmer · 12/11/2014 14:01

For the record, it is still dark in Alaska but too cloudy to see anything on that camera.

GloriaSmud · 12/11/2014 14:32

Sorry DustBunny ~ having said that an Aurora thread would be a good idea, real life (making decisions about DDs A-levels!) got in the way last night!
Looks a bit cloudy over Iceland way the next few nights but the weekend looks good with both an 'active' Aurora forecast and more breaks in the clouds. I'll still be looking at the webcams over the next few nights to check for anything though!

DustBunnyFarmer · 12/11/2014 16:02

It is getting dark/is already dark on the EU webcam site and lots of clear skies. Only problem is that the aurora forecast is currently low...

Nothing at Thingvellir except the houses, something starting in Finland though.

Those houses at Thingvellir, are they houses or a school? I thought they had the look of a school about them when were last there.
