Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Confused on the concept of non binary

Please be nice, i am not the sharpest knife in the box under normal circumstances and I'm running on about 6 hrs sleep over the past week at the minute.....

But something I've been trying and failing to understand re. the concept of 'non binary' in the 'gender movement' (or whatever it is/ought to be called) is that on the one hand, people who subscribe to that philosophy are saying they reject the traditional idea of explicit male/femaleness (because if "trans women are women" then they have swapped for instance). But then if you have 'non binary' individuals isn't that pretty much saying oh yes, actually there is a binary - and some people don't subscribe to it?

I do acknowledge sex =/= gender but not all NB people are intersex/have DSD

<<thoroughly discombobulated>>

reading this back i can't believe how dumb I sound and I'm sure I haven't really got across what I'm trying to ask but anyhow........

thoroughly discombobulated is exactly how they want you to feel!

As for the concept of non binary....

AGHHHHH!

Sorry not very helpful I know!

notknowledgeable · 23/01/2024 22:14

Its the phrase "coming out as non-binary" that throws me. How can you come out as something you have made up?

BabaBarrio · 23/01/2024 22:15

NB essentially do not feel like a masculine or a feminine gender all the time. NB is an umbrella term.

Simples. You made up your user name, so have come out on MN as “not knowledgeable.”

Most of our identity is made up in one way or another.

SabbatWheel · 23/01/2024 22:17

Friend of mine is NB. They are male but feel more in touch with what they perceive to be feminine.

PicklesAndTequila · 23/01/2024 22:18

It's completely nonsense and a way of being different and special without having to do anything.

Isn't that normal human experience though? When I think "my gender" I don't think/feel anything at all. I'm just me. I sort of assumed it was that way for everyone.

I didn't "come out" as "notknowledgeable"

I made up being "notknowledgeable"

"coming out" means to reveal a truth. Not to state something invented

Josette77 · 23/01/2024 22:19

Nonbinary people from what I know don't feel like a man or woman.

I'm not entirely sure what that means myself but that's how the people in my life describe it.

If you are really interested you should also post on a lgbtq board and see how someone nonbinary responds.

I don't think any one on here unless they identify as NB could explain as well.

Rain Dove on Instagram posts a lot about these issues (they are NB) so you might want to check them out!

pickledandpuzzled · 23/01/2024 22:20

As I understand it, they don’t conform to gender stereotypes.

Feminists also don’t conform to gender stereotypes and indeed disapprove of them.

Feminists are therefore all non binary.

So the FWR board is the most rainbow place ever cos we’re all Enbies.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/01/2024 22:20

It's not you, OP, it's them.

IamAporcupine · 23/01/2024 22:20

NB is narcissistic nonsense - I can't stand it

Btw, does anyone know who coined the term?
I've been meaning to a thread about this: why NB and not 'neutral'?!

Our identity is our truth, but it is created by us and therefore is made up. J
English is a made up language
England is a made up country with made up borders

Anything invented, thought or made by a human is made up.

Most self-identified feminists are gender conforming.

Hmmmmaybe · 23/01/2024 22:22

If means that men wear lipstick and nail polish and women cut their breasts off

in a move that should surprise no one - the male body remains the default physical form in the non binary world

IamAporcupine · 23/01/2024 22:23

BabaBarrio · 23/01/2024 22:15

NB essentially do not feel like a masculine or a feminine gender all the time. NB is an umbrella term.

As per my question above - if it really was about femininity/masculinity - why is the label 'NB' and not simply 'neutral?

BabaBarrio · 23/01/2024 22:24

ireallycantthinkofaname · 23/01/2024 22:18

It is normal. NB isn’t meant to be medicalised as if it were abnormal.
Not everyone feels the same about their gender identity, and so language has been made up to describe the nuances.
Just like we made up language to describe anything and everything in reality.

pickledandpuzzled · 23/01/2024 22:25

Are you a feminist @BabaBarrio ? I don’t know many gender conforming feminists.

TinDogTavern · 23/01/2024 22:25

It's garbage.

You can't 'feel' like a man or a woman, you just are one or the other.

It's impossible to define NB without resorting to regressive stereotypes or plain narcissism. The correct (polite) response to someone 'coming out' as NB is "that's nice, dear".

BabaBarrio · 23/01/2024 22:26

IamAporcupine · 23/01/2024 22:23

As per my question above - if it really was about femininity/masculinity - why is the label 'NB' and not simply 'neutral?

Because it is an umbrella term. The ones that feel neutral are under it with others that oscillate, others that are a bit of both and others that feel nothing.

IamAporcupine · 23/01/2024 22:26

@Josette77 - you can not feel like a man or a woman.
That's like saying you do not feel human.
You are one

DialSquare · 23/01/2024 22:27

Everyone is non binary. I doubt there is a person on earth who conforms wholly to masculinity or femininity.

NotBadConsidering · 23/01/2024 22:27

our truth

So-called progressivism in a nutshell. “Our truth” trumps the truth.

Everyone is non-binary. People who say they are non-binary are a whisker away from being gender critical but are too scared to make the final leap because they know they won’t be special anymore.

ChaToilLeam · 23/01/2024 22:27

It’s nonsense made up by people who desperately want to feel special.
