No in my experience.they never said anything bad about how much weight i had gained-nearly the opposite in fact (im naturally a bit skinny).

i dont think it should be an obsession unless there is a risk to health

an weight gain of around 20 - 25 pounds over the course of a pregnancy is fine....some is extra fat stores, but the vast majority is the weight of the baby, fluid, placenta, uterus, breast tissue, extra blood volume etc...

good to eat a sensible varied diet , and eat well, but not attempt to not gain weight or actively diet , unless under medical supervision

No, but I was aware that putting lots of weight on, in the first months, was not a requisite for a healthy baby. In other words... you are eating for you and a tiny bit for the tiny little person living inside you.

I didn't put much weight on during the first 5 months, I didn't looked pregnant until the 7th month but...I put more than 10 kilos on the 9th without changing my eating habits, so... who knows.

BTW I have a French friend who was bragging about how much weight she was putting on since the 2nd month... so, not sure really if the "weight control" is a general trend.

In my opinion French medics are ridiculously obsessed by women's weights anyway.

God, I was 4 stone over weight when I got pregnant, put on a further 1.5 stone and never once was it mentioned.

Try not to eat too much crap, would be my adcvice!

I live in Belgium and have never felt any pressure not to put on too much weight in Belgium- in fact - my midwife here didn't always weigh me. Maybe I should look at the Belgian mums website for their experiencs.

I had the same MW for both my PG's and the only time my weight was discussed was so they could work out how much painkiller to use - should I need it - which I did'nt as it happened.

And I should add I am not a naturally skinny lady either!

just tell her you are enormous, the size of a house and loving every chocolate and cake filled minute of eating for two !

and yes, being healthy and having no BP or SPD issues is the important thing!

I had DS1 in Belgium and my obsterician was obsessed with my weight gain and alot of my friends reported the same - one of my friends was even told to limit her carbs in the last couple of months as she was putting on too much weight - telling a pregnant woman in her last trimester not to eat any cake - madness!!

Can we just clarify... Is there any link between weight gain and the size of the baby?

My midwife never even weighed me!!! I kept an eye on it myself but just made sure I ate properly. Unless weight is an issue due to health e.g. pressure on heart etc, then in my opinion it shouldn't be something that is concentrated on.

you cannot starve yourself to make the baby smaller, as the baby will leach everything out of you to ensure it grows....so you end up ill

there is some suggestion, although i am not well up on this, that eating too much wheat, sugar, refined carbs will make a baby larger than it would ordinarily be...i think it is the Gentle Birth method by Gowri Mothra that advocates this....babies have got bigger, but probably more to do with better maternal nutrition rather than people eating too much wheat ?? just not sure !

i think eating too much sugary stuff, cakes, fizzy pop, sweets can encourage GD, which can lead to a larger baby, ?

it is just a minefield!

eat well, everything in moderation etc..

I didn't care with ds. I put on 5 stone, and ate really healthily. It all came off, eventually.

With dd, as a friend became pg at nearly the same time, we were always comparing notes. Incidentally I ate crap for the whole 8 months I knew I was pg, and put on less than 2 stone. Still working at losing it

I have just read Gentle Birth Method by Gowri Murtha and from what I could glean the wheat, low GI, sugary type foods can tend to make the woman retain water and swell in the pelvic area, and this in turn can make it more difficult to get the baby out....

i see..so it does not affect the size of the baby per se?

Summerfruit..was not implying you would starve ! it was in response to Ceolas asking if there is a link between weight gain and the weight of the baby..if you cannot starve to get a small baby, maybe the reverse is also true?

oh i see...well then , you should not be denied a homebirth based on the estimated size of a baby !

Surely the purpose of pregnancy is to make it okay to nosh an entire box of Mr Kipling's French Fancies in one go?
