At lunchtime today i was at ds2's school for a meeting, standing chatting towards the end, when i suddenly got terrible pains in both feet, running down the outside of each foot and up towards my ankles. Initially i thought it was cramp, but 6 hours later i can barely weight bear and the pain has me in tears. I had to get a friend to drop me to get teh kids and blag a lift back home, dd1 is having to cook dinner because i just tried to walk and ended up crying because it hurt so much to take even half a dozen steps.

Any ideas?

Both feet, lou? Can't be something you've done, I don't think - can it? - they tend to be on one side, don't they?

Ring NHS Direct? It sounds awful. Sad

Could it be referred pain from a low slipped disc? Or trapped nerve sounds possible. Sorry to hear it, anyway Sad. I would call NHS Direct if it was me.

no I don't think they'll laugh - its not like its a small pain, it sounds really nasty - phone them immediately. 0845 46 47 (I think!)

nhs direct dont know what it is

initially they said it could be inflamed tendons, but it is the part under my feet that is painful

she said she will refer it to an out of hours service, and hope that by saying i am a single mum unable to weight bear with a disabled child, they will bend the rules about doing a home visit, but she couldnt promise

couldnt even say when they would call me

Can you phone the emergency admissions unit of your local hospital? See if they have any ideas, or can be of any help?

a similar but much milder thing happens to me occasionally. I always assumed it was a circulatory thing - do normal circulatory/muscle pain releivers help (heat, rubbing it etc)?

hope they can send a doc out (if not, might be worth looking up a physio in the yellow pages? prob expensive though).

MamaG · 09/05/2006 19:59

What about emergency docs? If I phone my normal GP number, it sends me to a sort of central emergency doctors - they do home visits.

Bet she didnt laugh either lou!

lou33 · 09/05/2006 20:02

the people she refers it onto would be the same people i would be directed to if i called my gp

they also happen to be based at my nearest hospital which is 20mins by car

my feet are nice and warm now but it still bloody hurts when i try and stand up!

(whimpers)

"Bend the rules about doing a home visit" - grrrrr! OF COURSE they should be able to do a home visit, and it shouldn't be against the rules. I am seriously hacked off about some out of hours "services". Would they rather you called an ambulance?

Report
lou33 · 09/05/2006 20:03

ikwym, she said to me if i get worse before they manage to call then to call an ambulance if needed

The bottom of the foot can hurt like that with some forms of tendonitis and it can come on suddenly.

Use the RICE system until you get medical attention:

Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

Report
beckybrastraps · 09/05/2006 20:10

It is RIDICULOUS!! I have great respect for the work of GPs but this new system is bonkers! People don't just get ill in surgery hours, and tying up ambulances and A&E surely can't be sensible? I appreciate there are some idiots who call out doctors for trivialities, but after some questioning, they should surely give the benefit of the doubt. I hope they call you soon and you get some reassurance. Have painkillers had any effect?

Report
lou33 · 09/05/2006 20:20

am resting and elevating, no ice here

ibuprofen at 6pm but it hasnt worked judging by the pain when i stand

Frozen peas?

Report

if it is tendonitus, you will need to rest and take antiinflammitories for a few days, there is no quick fix cure.
Perhaps a phonecall to a local podiatrist who works from home...?
You can get foot arch supports from the chemist

well

a doc called me and tried to tell me my feet were hurting because i had a fungal infection, but when i insisted i had no fungus or sign of infection, she said i should put my feet in a foot spa

then she said something vague about spraining my feet and then spoke about inflammation, so she had no bloody clue really, BUT she did say if someone could come and get to the hospital, she could leave some strong painkillers for me

unfortunately i couldnt get hold of anyone so i had to spend 18 quid ona taxi to get them to me

and i still have to be able to walk to school in the morning ( i walk about 4-6k a day), and i have a driving lesson at 12

do painkillers stop you from driving?
