Wow we are speedy posters ... I think I have been on three threads since. My GP visit and still have a week to wait for my appt lol. So either the NHS drags incredibly slowly or we talk quickly Grin.

ElusiveCamel · 03/01/2012 23:30

Thanks MAS. Oh dear, oh dear. Was less entertaining heated than I was expecting and no-one brought of homeopathy ... Wink

ElusiveCamel · 03/01/2012 23:32

'brought up homeopathy' that should've been. I can't even blame my phone autocorrect for that one.

smee · 03/01/2012 23:41

Grin at Camel. We had Champagne on the day I was diagnosed. We'd decided to have a bottle if good news or bad. Was definitely a good idea. Hope you get some sleep..

amberlight · 04/01/2012 00:17

Cor, another new thread! Thanks! Why am I still wide awake?

DigOfTheStump · 04/01/2012 00:24

Dunno, but I am too.

jchocchip · 04/01/2012 07:30

Morning all. Rooting for camel this afternoon.
Still on holiday but up early and off for a walk in the 'forest' It's a wooded park where people go to walk run and do exercise classes - my cousin thinks its a safe place for me to be on my own while she is at work...

topsyturner · 04/01/2012 07:32

Morning

Ooh 18 ? Shall we have a "coming of age" party ?

Camel best of luck for your appointment later . Shall keep everything crossed for you (that'll annoy the rads girls Grin ) .

Off for rads in 20 minutes . I am so tired , all I want to do is climb back under my duvet . Back to not sleeping very well again .
Sigh ...

topsyturner · 04/01/2012 07:37

Now you have me worried jane !
Leave a post when you get back off your walk or I will be worrying all day that you have been carried off by some Magical Morrocan Woodland Creature !

OneInEight · 04/01/2012 09:26

Good luck to Camel. I hope at the very least you get an answer today. If you are looking over here - hi to my twin RightTitNoMore - I know you were on another thread last night. I start my chemo on Monday - do you have a start date for yours?

jchocchip · 04/01/2012 10:04

Hi Topsy, don't worry, I feel quite safe here! (apart from waiting ages to cross the main road because it is scary and not wanting to use the toilets because the ones in the forest are squatting ones...) The forest is like a country park (but in the city) and you have to keep to the paths. There are lots of people working maintaining the smaller plants and hardly any magical creatures, though I did see hens today!

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/01/2012 11:02

all sounds lovely jane (apart from squatting lavs- eeek)
Sending good vibes to camel

Thanks again for all of you good luck wishes. Woke up quite calm today, thankfully. I'm working from home (and am therefore really not typing this on MN right now! Wink) this morning and am going to get my nails done before meeting my friend.

pranma · 04/01/2012 11:52

Good luck camel. I just want to say that whatever happens you have found a very supportive bunch to hang out with.

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/01/2012 12:09

Camel - not til LATER??? Blimey! I am back in now with candle lit for you, and will be thinking of you. Wine either way is the right way to go. Wink

KK: don't stay away on our account, only on your own. Very, very happy to chat about your lovely Dad if it helps.

jchocchip · 04/01/2012 13:32

Went out for a coffee on my own, (for the challenge of ordering and paying in french!) Came back and the maid (!) had cleaned the appartement and made lunch... Do you think she would fit in my suitcase? I so need this lifestyle... (Someone was cleaning the car this morning - people make a living doing odd jobs and it means that they act as security too)

Sometimesiwonder · 04/01/2012 13:48
Envy

Nuff said.

RightTitNoMore · 04/01/2012 13:50

Hello again ladies with a special hug to OneInEight. Also thanks to smee and MAS for chivvying me on the forbidden cures thread.

Sorry to have loved you and left you but I've really been all over the place emotionally. DH has been keeping an eye on the thread and asking why I've not been posting. So, , I'm back DH!!

We saw the oncologist on 22nd December and learned that I'm in for the full works - chemo (FEC regime), radiotherapy, hormone therapy (Arimidex) and Herceptin.

Odd to think that 2 1/2 months ago I barely knew where the hospital was located and now I'll be practically living there for the next 18 months.

I went for my first wig fitting yesterday. DH wasn't swept away with an auburn haired DW (nor was I although I liked the style so the wig lady is going to get one of that style in my colour for me to try next time) but did rather fancy the slightly blonder look. I've currently got a shoulder length birds nest because I've never been able to do much with my hair bob. I'm thinking about going ahead and getting a really short cut in the next few days in the hope that losing that will be at least a bit less of a shock. Did any of you do that?

The appointment letter for the chemo arrived in this morning's post. I need to have my bloods done on Friday the 13th (of all bloody days...), the pre-chemo assessment is on Monday the 16th and the first cycle will be given on Tuesday the 17th.

Scared much? Me? You betcha I am.

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/01/2012 14:08

aww righttit bless you-we'll be here for you and all the chemo ladies will have loads of info and advice to help you- you can do it and once you've started am sure it'll seem less daunting. I think that the getting hair cut is what people do- makes it less alarming and upsetting when it falls out (my SIL had her head shaved to stubble by my brother) amber is a happy wig wearer sop will be sure to advise as I believe was figgy

Oh dear-am plunged a bit into gloom as I emailed ds's drama teacher about his poor progress and he confirmed that ds is really not doing well because he finds it hard to be a part of the groups (in speaking out/giving his ideas etc) and his written work is the very barest minimum and not to GCSE standard -what to do ? We're going to show him what the teacher has written to shock him a bit and to show it's not just me nagging. So frustrating as he is bright and imaginmative but much of the time in his own,shy world.Sad I find it so hard- I was painfully shy but also quite competitive and a natural hard worker with much self discipline (too much in a way) so I find it particularly baffling and distressing (dh much the same- very shy and quiet but confident in his work )

Dig that whole tree episode sounds very scary - no wonder you were upset
KK it takes a long time and a whole 'wheel of grief' to begin to move on from losing a parent. You know you can off load on here if you want to, don't feel you have to leave us alone - you are so supportive of others.
camel best wishes for your results, whatever the news is, it is somehow easier once you know what you are facing.
Amber - that's unbelievable how much you've had to cope with at the moment. So sorry for yet another loss for you and yours. Sad
Drift what a nighmare journey ! My centre is about 10 mins drive away, and I still block out about 2 hours to be sure to allow for delays etc. I can't begin to conceive having that much travel (tho', like dig, I like a bit of Wham myself Wink)
ILGC Glad you and yours have got through Christmas and New Year. I think of you and dd a lot.
Thanks MAS for starting the new thread.

Off to rub some aqueous in - am a bit sore this week !

Sometimesiwonder · 04/01/2012 14:35

Righttit - that's a lot to take in, no wonder you have been all over the place. I had the FEC regime, and I cut my hair before it could go. Not straight away - it tends to start going suddenly, a fortnight after the first dose, so you can wait until then. You'll know when it has a foot out the door, as it starts to feel yukky. At that point, when a lot came out on the brush one morning, dh and I hacked it off very short and I just slapped a scarf on for the next few months.

It isn't as bad as you probably think, and it comes back faster than you think it will. At least that has been my experience. The thought really is worse than the experience. Mine went in early July, and was well on the way back by late November. probably not long and lush enough to stop wearing the scarves, in hindsight Blush but definitely on the return.

As for the FEC itself? Everyone has a different experience, but I found it do-able, and also possible to get on with life. Drink ginger beer and eat pineapple. The first helps with any nausea, the second is good for the tummy and helps with any soreness in the mouth. My tip - don't let yourself be alarmed by the long list of possible side effects. They have to list them all: I had very few and was never sick, only nauseous and tired.

My other tip - they will probably recommend you use a saltwater mouth wash for a few days after each cycle. It really does help.

MAS - poor DS. I am having a think abut it. It's very hard to know what might help. He is clearly very, very able. Hard to make him let himself go more. If I have any shafts of brilliance I'll get back.....

OneInEight · 04/01/2012 15:17

Aargh, why are the nurses so depressing. I know they have to tell us the side effects but a bit of reassurance that most are quite rare would be good. And, yes I do know what disease I have - the missing boob is a pretty good indicator. Can you tell I'm not in a good mood!!!!

jchocchip · 04/01/2012 15:21

Natural to have a wibble wobble righttit

mas My ds was like this drama gcse and only scraped a c. Concentrate on the written work, it should be possible to get that to a higher standard - ask the teacher for guidance and make him redo it until it shines! Ds is now at uni doing ok, but he was a late developer cf dds and happy to coast!
