Opinions on the boys name Spike please!

My husband keeps saying if we have a baby boy he wants to call him Spike.
Initially I thought thats a dogs name - because a girl I went to school with years ago had a little dog called Spike.
But I must admit that over time the name has grown on me - and now it mostly makes me think of a really cool little chap! What do you think? Was my first opinion right or could this be a good name? Would he have to be a certian type of boy to carry it off? What if he is shy? (ok, enough of my questions!!!)

I think your first thought was right - it's a dog's name, not a person's.

If you must use it, give him a proper name and use it as a nickname. It is quite cute on a little boy, but can you imagine being a grown man called Spike?

Yep, as Hensum says, fine as a nickname, but ffs don't saddle the kid with that as a name.

um sort of cool but i think people may expect him to be trouble? if he is a serious sort of person in later life he may hate it

Spike in the Gormenghast novels was a bit of a rascal.

Otherwise it makes me think of Spike Milligan, but he was funny so not totally bad association

Not a cool little person imo. It makes me think of a particularly nasty sort of thug, I'm afraid.

I do think it's cool - let's try to think of a "real" name that it can be a nickname for, so then he can choose.

Are there any boys names that begin with SP?...hmm, I'm stuck.

as a nickname it's fun, but as a real name, well, put it this way.
Would you want a lawyer named Spike? Or doctor? Or Prime Minister?!

I've got a friend who's called Spike, he's a grown man with three children. To be fair it's his nickname, but no one calls him anything else. In fact, I don't know what his real name is! It really suits him, but then perhaps you grow in to your name. I think you have to be pretty cool to carry it off.

nickname's are different though. I know womeone whose nickname is 'Digger' but he has a 'real'; name to fall back on if he needs ot be official, which is fine.

LOL! Thanks for your input you have given me some very good reasons why not to use it as a first name! Lionstar, Spencer was my maiden name, I really love it as a first name but I would expect people would think that is the only reason I would name my son that..what do you think?

I met a guy on a training course once who kept referring to his son, his lad, his little boy etc. Eventually I said 2What's his name, you never use it, is it something embarassing?' It was Spike. He obviously was not 100% comfortable with it.

I love it!

I wanted to call ds Spike.... Lots of good Spikes out there...Milligan, Lee, Jonze... Anyway, DP wasn't too keen.
I know a little boy called Spike and it really suits him...

When people asked what we were thinking of calling DS I got lots of ...'Oh, that's unusual/weird/a dog's name..' kind of responses. But if you like it go with it!

Are you planning on giving birth to a dog or a vampire or celebrity?

IMO only those three are able to carry off the name Spike.

Great name to call your son for every day use, but would make his "given" name something more conventional - something that he would feel comfortable announcing in a board room.

Loulabell, how funny. I've had a similar dilemma in that my surname is also a boys name that I rather like. As we are not yet married I just could not use it (even if hypothetical son took DPs name). If (when!) we get married I'd be sorely tempted, but probably couldn't especially as it would mean father and son having the same first initial. It is a dilemma though.

spencer is very nice
spike is ok for nickname...but i just think of big orrible dog in tom and jerry with studded collar.

if i loved spencer as a name and it was also my maiden name...i think that is even more reason to use it tbh

I love it.
If you like Spencer and it has personal meaning as well then go for that as a 'full' name and Spike for every day!

I considered this for DS2 and I also loved Felix, which people said is a cats name lol
