To report dsis/ bil to rspca

For overfeeding their dog.

I'm not being spiteful, bil has previous 'form' for this. Their last dog had a whole host of health problems associated with being obese and had no quality of life for several years before she finally had to be put to sleep. She just lay there huffing and puffing, barely able to stand. She was never spayed because the vet refused to do the op until she lost enough weight. She never did. Bil fed her sausage rolls, chocolate, crisps, all the human leftovers etc. Dsis told him to stop, he ignored her. I told him to stop. We were all very clear that what he was doing was not kind but killing her - slowly and cruelly. He ignored everyone and even seemed to relish continuing to do it against other people's advice/ concern. He made jokes about it.

So she died. Bil was devastated, went a little bit weird about it (think garden shrine, deep depression, no interest in wife and kids etc). They ended up getting another dog - male, same breed. I saw the dog at the weekend and it's already overweight (a year old) and clearly heading down the same route. Bil has already started sneaking complete junk into his food bowl. So, knowing that he's taken absolutely no notice before and continues to behave exactly the same, even against my sister's wishes, wibu to report them to the rspca?

Good idea, may be a wake up call for them.

The RSPCA won't do a thing unfortunately.

Someone needs to bluntly tell him that he's killing the dog.

Does he really feed chocolate to the poor dog? Doesn't he know it's poisonous?

Report
LittleLionMansMummy · 12/09/2016 19:13

Everyone has tried that ThymeLord in no uncertain terms. Dsis has no ability to influence bills actions and he just treats it as some kind of joke.

Just reading your post makes me angry. Selfish, stupid arsehole (him not you!).

Call him and tell him that you're very sorry but you are going to be reporting him to the RSPCA and asking them to remove the dog from him (hopefully he won't realise this won't happen). Tell him he killed his last dog and you cannot sit by and watch him kill another one. Hopefully it will wind him up, make him shout and scream and then he'll calm down and have a lightbulb moment.

The RSPCA does not have the resources to stop people overfeeding their dogs. It sounds as if your BiL has "issues" tbh

Report
ThymeLord · 12/09/2016 19:18

I'm not being unhelpful but the RSPCA won't do anything at all.

If BIL doesn't know how useless they are then I would threaten him. Directly tell him "I'm going to report you for animal abuse".

That's awful and made me really upset for the poor dog that passed away. Does he at least give the dog regular exercise to help counter the food?

Report
LittleLionMansMummy · 12/09/2016 19:23

No regular exercise at all Life. He thinks that because they have a big garden that will suffice.

Unfortunately the RSPCA won't be able to do anything. They could make recommendations but not take legal action unless the dog is deprived of basic essentials like food and shelter. Your BIL's behaviour is very worrying though, I'd think he just didn't care but he was depressed by the loss of the previous dog and yet carries on doing the same thing that contributed to her death. It's difficult to know what to do when he won't listen to advice even from the vet. In your DSIS's shoes I wouldn't have wanted to get another pet knowing how they would be treated but I suppose he pressured her.

I'd be blunt and tell him I reported him for animal abuse and cruelty because I don't want to see him slowly torture another dog to death for the kicks. What a disgusting creature he is.....he knows exactly what he's doing and he gets pleasure from it.

Report but if that doesn't work, everybody asking him why he's trying to torture another dog to death, introducing him in social situations as the psychopath who likes to torture animals for pleasure... Social stigma might work.

I agree with this ^

Are dog "feeders" a thing now?

Report
mypropertea · 12/09/2016 19:46

I'm afraid d sis is as much to blame in my eyes, she could be walking the dog/having it walked/be making him do it. She could also have had the blast dog pts before it's suffering was so bad.

Depends how much you want to have any sort of relationship with dsis and bil. If you threaten them with the RSPCA they'd be right to go NC I appreciate that what he's doing is wrong, but if I went round reporting everyone who did things I decided they shouldn't to the relevant authorities I'd think I was becoming a little unhinged.

I like dogs but I think people are more important. Sounds like your bil has a lot of issues. Overfeeding people or animals is about expressing love, and problems therewith. Perhaps he could do with a spot of sympathy rather than your current approach. Just a thought.

My ex husbands grandparents did this for years. They'd get a dog, overfeed it to the point it was like a barrel on legs and then it'd die. Then a couple of weeks later a new dog would be got and they'd do it all over again. I had to stop visiting in the end because I couldn't keep my mouth shut.

ThymeLord · 12/09/2016 19:50

If he foes have "issues" then he needs to deal with them in ways that don't involve killing another animal that has no voice of its own.

Report
phillipp · 12/09/2016 19:51

While I agree it's abuse.

The RSPCA will not do anything about him over feeding the dog or not walking it.

I reported someone for similar and they I not class it as abuse

He sounds really odd

This makes me feel so bad for the poor dog :( I'm not sure the RSPCA would do anything but it might be worth mentioning it if it would 'scare' him into action. Or you just steal the dog and say it ran away when out 'exercising' itself in their garden Wink

My granny has done this with her dog. Liver patè on toast for breakfast, All left overs. Dog treats when she leaves and treats when she gets back. She would not have it she was making the dog obese and unwell - not even being able to walk shop. The vet was going mad at her.

She was ill recently and the dog come to my house for two months and lost over half a stone. She looked years younger and was looking forward to walks.

She is back home now and it's starting to pile on. I walked in the other day and she had made her a massive pan of mince meat, gravy and ripped up bread. Sad

If your able to talk to RSPCA do so - even if they could have a word, my nan is 84 so Im not sure how to go about it.

There's some very weird psychology going on there...WTF?

Seriously, I don't know what's behind it but I'd say it's pathological.

I spend most of my life telling owners their pets are fat.

I would say 9/10 times the animals never loose weight. I'm sure people think I'm making it up. Ive even tried showing my own dogs as an example of what they should look like but people are so used to seeing fat it becomes normal.

Report it but I doubt he will change sadly. Your SIL needs to grow a pair and tell him she will rehome it to someone responsible before he kills it.
