To think there's someone living in my loft?

On Monday morning when I returned from the school run the back door was wide open, I was a bit un-nerved, shouted hello and checked around, nothing seemed untoward or out of place so I presumed I'd left it open before I went. Fine.
Tuesday we didn't go to school, nothing to report.
Wednesday I closed and locked the back door and looked back at it as I was closing the front door, it was 100% shut and locked with the key in. Get back from the school run and it is wide open again. Now I'm freaked out.
We leave the key in the back door all the time to avoid puppy accidents while we're finding the key, so today just as an experiment I locked the back door and took the key to school with me. It was still shut and locked when I got in.
Now I've just been in the utility room, which is just off the kitchen (where the back door is) and it is part of a single storey extension so has a loft hatch, we've never ever been up there (I always kind of presumed it wasn't a proper loft) and as soon as I walked in I noticed the hatch had moved quite considerably, it was literally the first thing I saw as there is quite a gap around it so it has only happened since around 4pm; the last time I was in there.
The door to the utility room is always shut because the kids aren't allowed in there and I'm the only person in the house

AIBU to think the only logical explanation is that someone has recently moved into my utility room loft?

I would be on the phone to the police right now! Scary stuff

Koalafications · 21/05/2015 21:24

That's so creepy!

Wishful80smontage · 21/05/2015 21:24

Can you send anyone up to look?!

Waltermittythesequel · 21/05/2015 21:24

Shit. It sounds like it could be.

MavisG · 21/05/2015 21:25

Police.

TheWiseOldElf · 21/05/2015 21:26

Our loft hatch often moves out of place if there is a strong wind. Obviously doesn't explain the back door issues but might explain the moved loft hatch?

Fabulassie · 21/05/2015 21:26

This is going to be one of those epic threads where we clamour for updates.

call the police, OP!

Rudawakening · 21/05/2015 21:27

Can you call your Dad or anyone to have a look. I'd be tempted to call 101 if not and explain your concerns.

Although they must be pretty daft to leave the door open and the hatch visibly moved.

CatthiefKeith · 21/05/2015 21:28

Do you have any big burly men (brothers/neighbours/friends) you could call and ask to check?

Cabawill · 21/05/2015 21:28

If see if I could get someone to come and get a ladder and torch up there. No way I would be able to sleep tonight if I didn't check!

Twirlwirlywoo · 21/05/2015 21:28

Can you get a neighbour to pop up on a ladder first perhaps before calling the police?

Or at least get a neighbour/friend around to be there with you whilst you pop up and have a look.

Tequilashotsfor1 · 21/05/2015 21:29

Creepy!

Shock
scratchandsniff · 21/05/2015 21:29

Bloody hell I couldn't be in the house if I thought there was any chance that was the case.

Is it a rental property? How long have you been there?

You need to get someone big and burly round to have a look for you, or as others suggest call the police.

Wishful80smontage · 21/05/2015 21:29

Yes fabulassie hope OP keeps up updated.

Call the police and get them to check it out. I say this as an ex police officer. I always loved these jobs as it was always something or nothing. Nothing meaning no paperwork so they would adore you!

CalleighDoodle · 21/05/2015 21:29

Id be out of there immediately until someone had investigated!

AtomicDog · 21/05/2015 21:29

How would someone have the key for the back door though?
And if someone was trying to sneak into your house, why would they leave the door wide open?
Makes no sense.

Tequilashotsfor1 · 21/05/2015 21:29

But what if some one is waiting up there to lob some ones head off

5YearsTime · 21/05/2015 21:30

Oh how creepy! Please tell me you have friends or family to come help?

Although if I was sneakily living in a loft I doubt I would leave your back door wide open!

TheoriginalLEM · 21/05/2015 21:30

OP, my heart is racing reading your post - ffs call the police, or get something heavy and go and have a look!!

silverglitterpisser · 21/05/2015 21:30

Omg how brave r u?! I'd b crapping myself tbh. It is probably nothing but please get it checked out a.s.a.p.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/05/2015 21:30

Oh bloody hell that is seriously creepy. I shuddered.

Op can you get someone to be with you?

FannyFifer · 21/05/2015 21:31

This is mental, ring someone to check it out immediately.

RebootYourEngine · 21/05/2015 21:31

Seriously. You think someone is living in your attic and you are calmly telling mumsnet. Id be out the house and phoning the police.
