DP WASTING FOOD

WibblyWobblyHead · 12/04/2015 19:47

I'm a SAHM so usually make DP's dinner ready for when he comes home.

Sometimes he'll buy food and eat it on the way home then tell me that he's not hungry cos he's eaten so the food I've cooked goes in the bin wasted.
All I ask is for him to give me a text and tell me not to cook if he's eaten to save me wasting my time preparing and cooking it for it then to be thrown away. He's self employed and works alone so has no excuse about not being able to text at work.

If I haven't cooked and he gets home and there's nothing prepared he moans and groans that he's starving!

He thinks I'm being unreasonable for wanting him to give me 1 text to let me know either way when he's "so busy at work and hasn't got time to be texting" (even though he checks in on FB etc....)
We haven't got much money as it is so to have food wasted constantly is really starting to irritate me!

AIBU?

He's a fuckhead, HTH.

monkeysaymoo · 12/04/2015 19:50

Well personally I'd stop making him anything at all or at the very most I would reserve him the previous nights dinner that he didn't bother to eat

TwoOddSocks · 12/04/2015 19:50

YANBU. I'd be annoyed. Could you save the food though and have him heat it up the next day for dinner? (Probably won't be as nice but that's his problem). It's still inconsiderate though, what reason does he give for not being able to send a simple text?

thetroubleis · 12/04/2015 19:50

YANBU to be annoyed but YABU to chuck it! Invest in some decent foil and he can have it the next day.

Repeat as needed Grin

AlternativeTentacles · 12/04/2015 19:50

Agreed. But why are you throwing it away? Can it not be saved and reheated the next day? Can you start cooking stews/chillis/curries that can be left until you know what's happening before dishing up?

seaoflove · 12/04/2015 19:50

Looks like you'll have to stop making him dinner then.

AuntyMag10 · 12/04/2015 19:50

Yanbu, why can't he eat the previous nights dinner? I would do that until he learns to start letting you know if he will be eating in or not.

Why do you bin it? Seriously? Can you not freeze it/keep it for lunch?

NonDom · 12/04/2015 19:51

Either make nothing, or make something that can be stored. He will soon get the message.

SoupDragon · 12/04/2015 19:51

Don't bin it, freeze it.

CookPassBabtrigde · 12/04/2015 19:52

YANBU mine does this too. Whenever he does the cooking, he cooks enough for about 6 people (there's 2 of us and a baby) and says he'll 'eat it later' but he never does.
We don't have a freezer so it goes in the fridge for a day or two then gets thrown out. It's always too much for me to eat on my own before it goes off Angry I hate wasted food!

HicDraconis · 12/04/2015 19:52

If he's eaten already, can you not freeze anything you have cooked rather than throw it away? Then on days when you haven't cooked, zap a frozen meal in the microwave.

I often don't have time to text dh when I'm on my way home (because I'm focussed on getting changed, getting to car and getting out) and I'd be pissed off if he asked me to text him every day as I was leaving. However I wouldn't be annoyed if I got in and there was no food ready, I'd just cook something.

chickenfuckingpox · 12/04/2015 19:52

freeze meals in plastic boxes and he can defrost as needed

Andro · 12/04/2015 19:52

YANBU, but how about making some batches if chilli/bolongese/etc and freezing them in portions - no waste and fast to finish the prep when he gets in?

expatinscotland · 12/04/2015 19:54

Why do you bin it? If it's because he's one of those fuckwits who 'can't eat leftovers' or 'won't eat the same thing twice in a week' then don't make him anything at all. He moans and groans you tell him there's the kitchen, go make yourself something. I won't until you let me know if you've eaten or not.

Lweji · 12/04/2015 19:55

Don't cook for him or put his food in the fridge for the next day.

Doesn't he eat with you? Why?

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/04/2015 19:56

Stop cooking for him.

Lweji · 12/04/2015 19:57

And can't you eat his food the next day?

I don't understand people who don't keep left overs.

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 12/04/2015 19:58

Is he this unhelpful about everything?

AmateurSeamstress · 12/04/2015 20:01

Disrespectful of him to eat on the way home knowing you're
likely to have cooked. And does he just buy for himself and not you? If so, how rude!

We always phone when leaving so the one at home has an ETA. I agree with the others, next time he pulls this stunt save his food for the next day.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 12/04/2015 20:13

make a basic tomato and mince sauce then freeze in batches, can reheat sauce and add to it, so add mushrooms and italian seasoning for bolognaise or chilli and kidney beans for chilli or chilli with peppers for tacos or wraps with a bit chopped salad. Get some of that frozen microwave rice or have some pasta done. If he doesn't eat the pasta mix in a tin of tuna and some mayo and sweetcorn then you could have it for lunch the next day or he would have it with salad next day. So much you can do with a basic sauce with very little work to do a quick dinner

Fifis25StottieCakes · 12/04/2015 20:13

and he could easily text you BTW

WorraLiberty · 12/04/2015 20:14

YANBU, that's very disrespectful.

Am I right in guessing he doesn't cook many meals for the family himself?

If I'm wrong and he does cook, start doing the same thing to him and see how he likes wasting time and food.

MissyMistress402 · 12/04/2015 20:14

Stop cooking for him, let him sort his own food out.
