to think they should charge the Syria girls

If they are indeed with terrorists in Syria then when a small chink of sense comes back to them and they want to come home, I hope they will be charged.

Those returning from Syria recently been charged, so there is every reason to expect established practice to continue.

Does the appearance of a further thread mean the existing one discussing them is out of date and they have definitely reached Syria?

adsy · 21/02/2015 08:19

oh I don't know. can you link me to the original thread, please

If you're talking about the three teens, then I actually feel dreadfully sorry for them. Youngsters at that age see things in very simplistic terms and I imagine this seems like a big, romantic adventure to them. I can just imagine them giggling and plotting in one of their bedrooms about the big adventure they're going to gave and what a lovely young, handsome husband they'll get. It's a really difficult one as I know they've went of to join this scum not realising what a life of misery they're going to have. I think each case needs dealt with in an appropriate manner as they are most likely going to end up in a situation where they will spend their lives being abused as they're too frightened to come home. I suspect that, given a choice, most of the young teens that go over there would soon be home with their tail between their legs and with a new appreciation of their home.

Also, there's this BBC article from just over a year ago which states all those returning from Syria face arrest (and that the numbers then were rising). I suppose the difficulty comes with travel being via a third country and how well any individual can be tracked (assuming their intention to reach areas under IS control is known in the first place).

adsy · 21/02/2015 08:29

I don't feel in the least sorry for them. To feel sorry for them leads you down a dangerous route that everyone who joins terrorist groups was "radicalised" against their true lovely nature and we should let them all off.
If you're old enough to organise a trip to Syria then you are old enough to face the consequences.
they live in London, they will not be unaware of what this group does.

They are children. Children make very bad decisions. I feel very sorry for them and their families.

adsy · 21/02/2015 08:35

there are lots of teenage boys in ISIS committing the most horrific atrocities imaginable. Do you feel sorry for them as well?
These girls are going over there because they want to marry murderers.

Unaware? Romantic adventure? These girls must be aware that ISIS are beheading western hostages. I also have limited sympathy for their families who claim to have no knowledge of their radicalisation. These girls are the tip of an enormous iceberg and this country is sailing straight towards it with the mask of political correctness over our eyes.

ArmyDad · 21/02/2015 08:35

I'm with adsy I feel no sympathy for them at all. They are about to go and live in an austere environment and will probably be badly treated but I don't care. If it does go badly for them they can then be used as an example.

PtolemysNeedle · 21/02/2015 08:39

I can't say I feel any sympathy for them, they have made a choice and they should stand by it. I don't think teenage boys would be treated with sympathy in this situation, so nor should girls.

I haven't followed the story very closely though, have they actually done anything that could be considered illegal yet?

HermioneWeasley · 21/02/2015 08:41

Zero sympathy here too. They are aligning with people who would destroy all we hold dear in a heartbeat.

adsy · 21/02/2015 08:41

Not yet. ptolomy. They flew to Turkey and it is assumed they are going to Syria from there.
I guess if they never make it to the terrorists then there is nothing they can be charged with ( I'd be a bit wary if I was sat next to one of them on the tube though)

Weebirdie · 21/02/2015 08:44

They deserve all they get punishment wise on their return - if they ever get back here safely.

There are millions of young women worldwide who would give their right arm to have the freedom and way of life these young women have had, and to throw it all away the way these people have is beyond the pale.

adsy · 21/02/2015 08:47

I think it's terrifying and obviously just the tip of the iceberg.
This isn't the first time British people have gone over to Syria. If there are people willing to travel over there then there must be many more who sympathise with ISIS. frightening thought.

Mrscaindingle · 21/02/2015 08:50

No I have no sympathy for these girls, I'm sure it does all seem like a big exciting adventure to them but they can be under no illusions as to what their " handsome" jihadi husbands are capapble of.

I wouldn't waste a penny of the tax payers money to look for them. I do have a bit of sympathy for the families though but you do have to wonder how they were so unaware of what was going on.

funnyossity · 21/02/2015 08:52

I feel for the families of teenagers. Teens are unpredictable, even the "sensible" ones are liable to do something impulsive and the peer group overrides family loyalties.

NollaigShona · 21/02/2015 08:53

I thought that the purpose of young girls going to join Isis was to offer "comfort" to their soldiers like some weird willing Joy Division.
They go through a marriage but it is just a type of prostitution.
Have I got it wrong?

LokiBear · 21/02/2015 08:54

They are children. They have been manipulated and groomed. Couple that with the every day racism Muslims in this country face, plus the illegal war that the west waged following 9-11, plus the issues in Israel is it any wonder as to how vulnerable kids like this become snared in the extremists trap? I think rather than plotting punishments we should be looking at what can be done to protect our children from radicalisation. It is an absolute travesty that things have got this bad.

adsy · 21/02/2015 08:56

most teenage rebellion consists of getting drunk, staying out too late, and maybe stealing make up. Not many express their rebellion by wanting to marry people who behead their victims and burn others alive.
I do not believe that their parents are all completely westernised and knew nothing of the girls' extreme views. You simply don't reach that stage if you come from a "normal" family.

OP posts:
thelittlebooktroll · 21/02/2015 08:57

Are their motives political? Or are they going down there for boyfriends, sort of IS groupies?

SlaggyIsland · 21/02/2015 08:57

I'd feel sorry for boys as well at that age. I reiterate - they are not adults. Any more than the girl who went to France with her teacher was.

Stealthpolarbear · 21/02/2015 08:59

heir parents must be frantic
lets face it they arent going to fight because they will make too good hostages :(

adsy · 21/02/2015 09:00

you are excusing extremism. What a revolting sentiment. you should be ashamed of yourself.
I take it you have sympathy for the 9/11 hijackers as well? and the 7/7 bombers. Yeah, poor wee little souls did it because this is such a racist country.

I'm another one who says that they are children, and children do stupid, stupid things. I just hope the authorities can find them before they leave Turkey.

LokiBear · 21/02/2015 09:02

They have been groomed in the same way as victims of sexual abuse are groomed. Someone, or several someones, in this country has spent a lot of time convincing them of their cause. These girls have been targeted online and in person. Twisting Western foreign policy, justifying the be headings and warping their minds. This has happened right under the noses of parents, police and teachers. It is nothing short of a tragedy. I fear for our children.
