She just keeps getting on and wants cuddles and she thinks it's comfy.

No idea! Can't stand dog hairs on my clothes when she's sat leaning on my legs for fuss, so really don't want them all over the furniture. I realise I'm in a minority though not allowing my dog on the sofa and bed, as all my doggy friends have looked surprised when I've said this.

We have this argument every night. Dog says "let me on the sofa" we say no. We get into a heated debate.

Why not?

It makes him happy, he likes to be close to us. He's lovely and warm so keeps me cosy. I like stroking and cuddling him so why wouldn't I have him near me on the sofa? Hair/dirt doesn't bother me and he doesn't actually shed a lot anyway.

For most people pets are like another family member. I don't care what other people get up to but it works for us.

because DH let him,

and now he is bigger than me, so we just dont argue.....

(the dog. not DH. though DH is actually a good foot and a half bigger than me...and to be fair dh usually does as he is told....)

I'm watching This Week for first time in ages. Andrew Neil's dog, (just googled it) Miss Molly is all curled up on the sofa. She looks a bit hot.
Sorry for the drip feed!
Ha ha.

Urghh, gross. I love my dog but don't really fancy having ticks and wee wee'd on stinky tummy hair dropping off in my bed or sofa… Maybe on the end of the bed is ok if they are small and shorthaired...

My husband maults more than my dogs, actually true. My dogs are always on the sofa, they have their own little spots they like to sit.

Yabu.

I don't understand people who don't allow dogs anywhere other than the floor. Clearly have not researched owning a dog, of any breed.

Get a hamster you weirdos.

Miss Molly is lovely. I couldn't sit next to her without stroking her.
Dog on the sofa, why not, that's why vacuums were invented.

Because it means they are quiet and not running around beating the crap out of each other only the sofa mind, they aren't allowed upstairs...that's the cats domain!

Because he loves a cuddle and it keeps him calm. He's only allowed on his "end" which has a blanket over it though. And never in the bedroom.

Not on the sofa ever. But he does have his own chair :D

We have the same argument Vivi He stands on my eye line and stares and stares. Sometimes he throws in a shiver for good measure. He has Derren Brown levels of persuasion.

My Labrador has his own sofa that no one else is allowed on.

I wonder if long/short hair makes a difference? My first dog (from a rescue at about 16 weeks) was a longhaired terrier-type mongrel, and we lived next to a sandy beach = stinky dog, not allowed on the soft furnishings (while we allowed cats in/on the bed). My second dog was a (unofficial rescue) random shorthaired bitch (aged approx 18 months) who was plainly used to sleeping on the sofa (and encouraged first dog to do so), she (and he) was booted off every time caught, but she was more narked than he was. My third, and current dog, is a Border Collie who lived outdoors for the first three years of her life, and has never even attempted to get on the sofa.

My friend had a small, shorthaired bitch she allowed to sleep on the sofa, which was interesting when I had cause to stay with her, sleeping on said sofa for 3 weeks... Weirdly, I didn't mind shafing with that dog, though I wouldn't with my own.

Hmm.

Our dog is allowed on the sofa because he likes to sleep there. Mostly he likes to cuddle up with one of us, and that's nice for everyone. dh and him do argue over the beanbag, which was technically bought for dh but has become a dog bed too. If dh is on it the dog sits ever so close and looks at him meaningfully until dh makes room for him Grin

He is a pretty clean dog - I'd be a bit worried if he had ticks.

Mine, no because they are outside most of the time and so stink despite me bathing them, and the sofá is fucking white leatherHmm great choice DH. But the dog we had growing up used to sleep either on or in my bed depending how warm it was. Grin

Those of you who let their dogs sit on their sofas, do you expect visitors to move if they unknowingly sit in the 'dogs' place? just asking, as I was expected to move places at a relation's home recently for this very reason

p.s. I hate going home covered in dog hair :( I have a friend who has a dog and her dog has its own bean bag to sit on and always uses that. She takes the bean bag round to other people's houses too.

Dog's a member of the family. If there's room, she gets a seat. Junior member of a family, mind, so she's the first bumped when there's company. At which point she curls up over my feet and makes it quite clear that her spot is with Boss.

DontForgetTheLightAlesLawrence · 28/02/2014 03:22

The cat makes the sofa dirtier. Much, much dirtier. She is ancient, mind.

The dog keeps my feet warm.

Chottie - No, but I usually make sure I warn them before they sit so they don't get covered in hair. That said a lot of our guests sit there deliberately for the doggie cuddles. :)

My dog isn't allowed on the sofa because he's 35kg. He tries to sit on me then my legs go numb. And he sheds. But he's quite content to curl up by my feet and get massaged.
