AIBU?

to think people who don't bath/wash their DCs every night are lazy?

I am shocked by the amount of people on here who state that they only bathe/wash their DCs once or twice a week. OK bad cases of excema accepted, I just think that's soooo lazy. No one IRL I know leaves it that long so is it just a peculiar Mumsnet trait because they are too busy MNing?

DTS1 has excema btw, I just cover him in an emollient before he gets in the bath and it does not exercerbate it.

I mean, come on, babies and toddlers in nappies, older Dcs not very efficient at bum wipeing - how can people leave them to fester for days?

In the 'olden days' when tin baths had to be got out and water boiled in a copper pot, obviously it was not possible every day but nowadays that's not the case.

Also my DCs love RELAXING in the bath/shower. It's not only for cleanliness. They love feeling warm, clean and comfortable before getting into bed. Even my 12 week old starts getting excited just from me taking him upstairs of an evening because he knows he's going in the bath and he adores it.

Do all these people, who only bath their DCs twice a year, have a bath/shower every day themselves? Bet they do! Feel sorry for the poor DCs.

I bath DD at least every other day/night, but have not done every night since she was a few weeks old and realised I didn't have to Blush. Am very lazy though.
YABU.

i always bath ds in the morning before school as he gets ridiculously hot and sweaty at night and i like him to go out clean but when we were kids in the 70's Sunday night was bath night and that was it! i think it was the norm back then? Blush

My DD has a bath twice a week, in between she has a wash.
She is clean, happy and relaxed, don't see how not giving a bath is lazy - we're probably reading stories or talking about the day or drawing when your dc's are in the bath.
it's no biggie - different strokes for different folks!
and no I sometimes don't have a shower every day (gasp!)

YABVVU

My children were born in Germany and it is not common to bath children every night there. It is not particularly good for their skin and totally unnecessary.

My German friends would think you are a nutjob for bathing the DC every day.

You ought to read this BigMomma.

And yes, YABU. I bath my DC's every night because it's part of thier bedtime routine but they don't need it. I help DS with his bottom wiping during the day and DD gets regular nappy changes, both get a good wipe with a flannel after mealtimes. If it weren't such a good chill out for them, I'm not sure I'd bother more than 2 or 3 times a week!

Pat yourself on the back for being so fab.

Personally when Ive just done a 10 hour day providing financially for my DD, the last thing i wish o do with the only 2 hours of the day I get to spend in her company is argue and fuss over bath time which she hates.

I prefer to read her school book, brush her hair, eat cookies and drink milk and cuddle in front of a few episodes of Charlie and Lola.

But yes, lazy bitch mother I am, you should feel sorry for my child.

Also, no I wouldnt go long than a day or two without a shower... but then Im an adult with sweat that smells if it isnt rinsed off... and body hair etc.

Maybe they wash their children in stead of bathing them every day instead.

Maybe bath times are a source of stress (I know hair washing can be).

What a ridiculous post.

I'm glad your DCs love relaxing in the bath / shower.

Do you think that's true for everyone - or do you think that maybe for some people their DCs scream their heads off and get very upset in bath or shower.

And do you really think that the bath / shower is the only way to effectively clean a child's bottom?

Of course YABU. It is perfectly ok to bath your child every day and also perfectly ok not to bath your child every day.

yabu.

What is this relaxing in the bath that you speak of? IME baths are a cause for screaming hair washing meltdowns and near flooded bathrooms.

Mine have 4 a week (mainly so I can make sure their hair is bug free) and they are horrible experiences. Would do it less if I wasn't so paranoid about nits. I don't blame anyone for getting away with fewer baths TBH.

YABU - there's no need to bath that often. I bath DD every other day and wash her hair much less often than that. I shower every other day too - I'm pretty sure we don't smell. It's not laziness, its choice.

Report
withorwithoutyou · 18/10/2010 22:17

I do mine every other day, DD1 has excema and DD2 (15 weeks) screams bloody murder in the bath.

I am also lazy.

Same in Sweden as in Germany from what I can understand: they don't bath them every day. There is some kind of middle way between every day and twice a year, you know.

TheBrideOfBlatherstein I agree, would bath DD less if I could get away with it but it is a nice way to spend half and hour, she enjoys it. She is not stinky though and therefore does not need washing every day. Flannel after mealtimes, bum cleaned promptly, how dirty are your children BigMommaOf4 ?
