Was Sophie abused by her father?

We don't know much about Sophie's relationship with her father. We know he was a suspect when she first disappeared which led to her English mother committing suicide. He now works in a DIY store on the outskirts of Paris and wasn't exactly rushing over to Germany when Julien told him she might still be alive. We don't know much about Sophie at all - we were presuming for long enough that she was Alice. Sophie has no connection to the base that we know of - she has been taken much farther from home than the other girls.

If the dishy German policeman is alive I would be delighted but disappointed. Delighted because he is a nice distraction from the gloom but disappointed at an "aha he didn't die when a nutter set about him with a black and decker" plot point.
