Following on from the first thread (we were getting a bit short on space!).

Pastry week next - it's time for the dreaded soggy bottoms!

Hello!

YonicScrewdriver · 06/09/2015 07:22

Just responding to your last post to say Mmm, Tamal!

As you were.

GerundTheBehemoth · 06/09/2015 09:23

Tamal is just stunning, and seems quite lovely too. GBBO seems to have an 'only very likeable people allowed' policy. I do agree Brendan was slightly sinister but I still liked him.

ppeatfruit · 06/09/2015 09:28

Thanks Polkadots Hello all Grin I 2nd the Tamal love. btw. Grin

Difficult to be both likeable and a good baker IMO!

YonicScrewdriver · 06/09/2015 09:58

I actually think that is the dynamic; it's a nice programne, it's not meant to be conflict and shouting like big brother etc. Also the contestants don't really interact on screen and there's no public voting.

ppeatfruit · 06/09/2015 10:01

Yes very true Yonic The TV execs should think seriously about not having EVERY effing programme a serious competition . Enough already Grin

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 07/09/2015 10:17

Just watched last week's on catch-up, as I'd been away on Wednesday. I already knew who was in/out though.

The ice cream cakes were all a bit strange! I do like the embedded designs that some of them did - never seen that before.

I thought it a little unfair to be putting so much pressure on Ian, and then also to say that he was at risk of going out, just for being only 'medium' on the first day. I wonder if they are going to start judging him more harshly, trying to set him up for a fall. If they really are trying to find the best baker, they should be taking into account a bit how they are doing in the competition generally.

But I am glad that others got to shine more this time, as Ian isn't my favourite, much as I suspect he might be the best baker though, or at least best at devising interesting flavours and creations. He seems a hard worker, too, who has spent a lot of time practising and perfecting his creations, rather than a sort of spontaneously good baker. So I don't think it's fair to put extra pressure on him just for winning three times already.

I do like Nadiya and Tamal though.

Prison Paul was better this time, with the laughing over the gusset thing and the creepy figure (thought the legs were pretty good, actually, as he was sculpting them!). He is clearly much more knowledgeable about bread than a lot of them; that's his real strength more than cakes I suspect.

I quite like Flora, even if she can be a bit perfect; she can't really help her background. Her cakes have generally been beautiful, too, though a bit boring perhaps. I quite like boring, at least to eat, as some of the other combinations have been really weird.

What are the other two men called, Alvin and Matt is it? I think Alvin was quite at risk of going out last time, though he seems nice enough. Just too many near misses. Ugne was funny, but I'm not surprised she went out, as she had too many actual disasters to stay. I am surprised she stayed longer than Marie, to be honest.

BagelwithButter · 07/09/2015 16:27

I agree, discussing success of GBBO with 15 y/o daughter, we like the fact that they all seem to be nice!

It was good to see Paul helping Alvin when his green ice cream was too big for the sponge roll. Competitive but not at all costs.

Heard a last from last year on radio, saying that last year's group still meet up.

Davros · 07/09/2015 16:52

I thought Sandy was hilarious on Extra Slice

emotionsecho · 07/09/2015 17:02

I think one of the things that sets GBBO apart is that fact that the participants seem to get on, help each other, sympathise with each other and just generally behave like human beings. It feels like they could be part of your own friendship/social group iyswim.

BagelwithButter · 07/09/2015 21:53

Exactly right emotion

wankerchief · 09/09/2015 20:00

Right, I'm here. No snacks today, ds1 is doing a healthq experiment at school and it requires me to fast for 24 hours.

Last time I ever ask if he needs homework help

LemonRedwood · 09/09/2015 20:04

I'm with Mat. Never bothered using a machine to make pastry

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 09/09/2015 20:06

Pears again, that's risky... was the downfall of someone on an early show

NoelHeadbands · 09/09/2015 20:08

God I love me a frangipani

Cherrypi · 09/09/2015 20:09

Thought I was dead clever getting my fruit bread to finish in time for bake off. Unfortunately the bread knife is in the dishwasher which I just switched on argh. Have tea though. Don't want any of them to go now. We'll maybe Ian.

wankerchief · 09/09/2015 20:09

Oooh rum

wankerchief · 09/09/2015 20:10

Ian is the insufferable bore you avoid in real life

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 09/09/2015 20:14

I think Alvin has been in trouble on a few shows, so he might be the one at risk - he so far seems to have been saved by the skin of his teeth.

Don't get how they were supposed to trim the pastry after it had cooked, without it cracking and breaking. Never occurred to me not to trim it before cooking.

MrSlant · 09/09/2015 20:15

Had to run all over MN to find you lot. Needed to find out if it was my wonky ears or if Mel really did ask that nice young man how he was going to 'spread his plums'? Grin

LemonRedwood · 09/09/2015 20:16

She did indeed. Don't think he understood the innuendo!

NoelHeadbands · 09/09/2015 20:16

Prison Paul is really growing on me

LemonRedwood · 09/09/2015 20:17

Flora really gets on my wick

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 09/09/2015 20:17

I didn't understand the innuendo...! (I mean, I can sort of guess now that you mention it)

wankerchief · 09/09/2015 20:17

Soggy bottom.
Oh dear
