DH turned it off 10 minutes or so before end as got so fed up with it. Friend's uncle directed it - but even that didn't keep him watching. Got the impressed DH thought it was all abit OTT, esp on the sex front.

interesting but way too much pointless sex, why is it only the women that have to do full frontal nudity? Think it would be better without it! or perhaps i am just a prude

If they edited out all the sex, we could make the kids watch it. Educational. Homework would be Read latin texts to find out what's going on. Dh and me were looking at each other wondering how we could make our vestigial memory of Roman times make sense of it, but failed.

I liked it
Polly Walker's character was fabulous

I liked it too, although a little bit ott in places. Some characters did look too preened i thought.

Plot seemed all over the place - one minute it seemed Pompeii (sp?) was going to marry someone or other's daughter who was told to divorce or her husband would be killed, but then he turns up with another bride - eh?

Here is the story so far...
Julius Caesar is off fighting the Gauls (France) and Lucius (Kevin mcKidd, NOT Daniel Craig) and Titus are two soldiers in the army. Meanwhile, back in Rome, Pompey, one of the top brass in the Senate is egged on by Cato to seize power whilst Jules is off fighting. Pompey's missus dies in childbirth (she is Caesar's daughter), so Caesar's cousin(?) Atia (Polly Walker) tries to set him up with a new wife - her daughter, thus forming a new allegience with Caesar (didn't work, cos Pompey ends up with woman with the long nose)
Meanwhile, Pompey's men have seized Julius Caesar's standard, the eagle, and blamed the Gauls. Lucius and Titus are dispatched to retrieve it, do so, in the process saving Atia's son Octavius and return to Rome as heroes.

Tune in next week for the next exciting episode......

I was not a history teacher.
Sex not that bad. No one remember Caligula? (The film with Helen Mirren, not our mumsnetter)

Report
gingerbear · 03/11/2005 01:34

I thought it was quite funny, when Atia was at it, huffing and puffing, with a slave wafting a fan and another stood by with a towel and a goblet of wine once the mistress had finished.
Put me right off that would!
