I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Place marking. Keep going ladies, we're getting there! Glad I brought some smiles with my last post on the previous thread :)

Sports day here I come...2.5 hours sitting in the sun...

Meerka · 01/07/2015 13:00

oh crikey ealli i hope you have a sunshade at least? please say you have ...

elizabethsmum · 01/07/2015 13:04

marking place in the shade. vom fest here with dd2's tummy bug Sad Sad

chopsface · 01/07/2015 13:19

Marking my place! Not really caught up with last few pages of other thread though. Well I read it but it went in one eye out the other (is that even a phrase?!)

Sorry to hear some of you have tummy bugs as well! And comiserations to those suffering in the heat too.

I've only done one wee today, that's bad right? Got a headache too :-( not vommed but not drank that much either. I'm back at work mornings only and it's flipping sweltering in the lab, especially wearing a lab coat too! One of our air cons in broke and keeps alternating between blowing cool air and 27 degree air! The man doesn't know when it can be fixed, long wait apparently. Apart from that being in work is good so far, I've 'come out' with the pregnancy, kind of had to as been off work so long I'd gone from flat tummy to 'starting to show'! Everyone thinks I'm 12w coz I've been showing my scan pic around, but I'm actually 16+2 :-)

Stay strong ladies :-)

Amyyy27 · 01/07/2015 13:19

Thanks Lucinda

eallison hope you cope with the sports day. Yes to a sunshade if you can get one!

Mrsm14 · 01/07/2015 14:06

Hi all, feeling horrible today in this heat - sorry for others who are suffering too. Developed a bit of a rash on tummy and arms too, so hoping it's just heat rash, not an allergic reaction. Sure it is just over worrying about everything! Keeping fingers crossed for some cooler weather very soon...

Mirabal · 01/07/2015 14:11

thanks for new thread Lucinda place marking

Sorry for all those suffering in the heat, is this the last thing we need? I am hiding indoors and thanks to the lord I have my MIL here to look after dd today, so so grateful

I quite like the idea of in one eye, out the other.......

Meerka · 01/07/2015 14:24

chops one wee isn't brilliant no. have you got some ketostix?

Ouch elizabeth'smum i hope your little one is better soon. can she keep some liquid down?

Mrsm14 · 01/07/2015 14:47

It's 29 where I am but feels like 40 to me!

Just had a chat with my doctor and he wants to switch me from cyclizine /metoclopramide combo, to prochlorperazine - think that's what he said. I hate taking pills to be honest and feeling a bit worried about starting yet another one. Does this mean they are increasing in strength? Only 8 weeks and anxious about all of this at the moment.

Mrsm14 · 01/07/2015 14:50

God just read some info online which says it is used to treat schizophrenia too. Really not sure about this :(

Daffodil3228 · 01/07/2015 15:39

hi Ems was it you asking about hay fever stuff? (Blaming my bad memory on heat and bump lol!)
I was sneezing away yesterday and asked doctor, he said no for pills but can still use eye drops and nasal spray and was happy to prescribe them. Hope your symptoms subside. HG is more than enough to deal with on its own!!
Chopsface that's great you're surviving being back at work although no air con sounds horrendous. Hope you don't get too hot.
I have to report a failure!! Went back to office yesterday, friend gave me a lift. Was actually pleased to be in proper clothes and leaving house and seeing friends at work-sad!! But didn't last and alarmed boss by being breathless, he ended up escorting me from the building despite protestations and told me to take the rest of this week off sick and we'll try again next week Sad And painful to admit but the bus journey back knackered me too.
Ah well at least I showed my (pasty ill) face!! I realise I am lucky with my team and boss, he's actually younger than me and has no experience of knowing people with this but he's been supportive. As all the bosses of other people on here should be! (Amy's boss I'm looking at you!!!)
Keep going in this heat everyone xxx

eallison88 · 01/07/2015 16:29

Managed to stay in the shade. Didn't manage to keep feet up. So have an elephant right foot and a fairly swollen left foot. Home for a few hours now, then back in for intake evening. In the sports hall. Which will be about a hundred degrees.

Lying on bed with very little on and a fan on me. Making this bearable!!

Meerka · 01/07/2015 16:42

mrsm prochloperazine has many uses of which anti psychotic is only one. its more used as a travel sickness remedy actually. its been prescribed many many times to preg women. its one of the 5 -6 known reliable ones. i'd def go for it. remember, dehydration is a bad thing, seriously.

im also glad you're off the metoclopramide.

i think i missed a few posts. cyclizine =is= an antihistamine so if if you are suffering you should be fine with that. ditto promethazine thoguh promethazine is stronger and prescription-only. Do not try other anti-histamines without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first when preg!

blimey ealli i hope mr ealli can coddle you when you are home

Mrsm14 · 01/07/2015 17:07

Brilliant thanks meerka - I guess I'm not sure how much improvement is realistic. I'm only being sick about 3 times a day but that's largely due to not moving around at all! Is it realistic to hope the right medication would mean I'd be back at work full time and coping ok? Have others managed this in first trimester? I have only been off sick for a week, it just feels like longer!

eallison you are hardcore. I don't know how you've been out in this!

Meerka · 01/07/2015 17:21

well, if you manage to get a med or combination of meds that work for you, you;'ll feel a great deal better than now (people often dont realise how effective they are until they try to come off them, then hurridly end up back on 'em!)

depending on luck and how severe your sickness is, a lot of people never really feel exactly right until the hormones settle down usually around week 16 - 22. Some people become right as rain after that. Some people still are not exactly well but way better than the first weeks. Everyone is different, sometimes wildly so.

Some people have managed to go back to work, often on reduced hours. Could that be an option for you? after meds the thing that helps HG mostly is rest, rest, rest unfortunately.

I think the best thing is to give the prochlor. a try, see how it goes. If it's not helping, ask for prochlorperazine + promethazine (stronger version of cyclizine, though some people get sleepy on that, but it can wear off). Next step after that is probably ondansetron if you can get it, or prochlorperazine promethazine and domperidone. Ideally that won't be necessary.

meerka thanks for your advice - really appreciated. confused think it probably answers your question too :)

LucindaE · 01/07/2015 17:40

Welcome all to the sparkling new thread. Chopsface That headache and not passing urine doesn't sound good, so agree with Meerka do watch out for dehydration, testing a lot.
eallison I am so glad you survived it. It's been incredibly muggy.
Meerka Went to Ironbridge Gorge yesterday, and it was 30 something. Not quite so hot today in Powys, more humid.
Daffodil I am so that your boss has some sense. I hope next time works out OK. Lol about your very fair comment on Amy's manager...
Meerka Great advice for Mrsm14 on the uses of the drug.
Confused Others are much better informed than me to advise, and I'm sure Meerka or elizbethsmum or someone will. They can try various combinations.
I'm just going to check nobody's been left behind on the old thread after what happened last time...

Thanks lucinda for going back - hadn't realised the new thread had started! We're off on Friday late afternoon. DP has taken the afternoon off work to come back and drive us there, he was originally meant to meet us at the airport but I couldn't bear the drive Confused

Laura7010 · 01/07/2015 17:56

Mrsm, I take that medication and it works so much better for me than anything else. I can go to work and am sometimes only sick once. It has made me feel so much more human. I tried cyclizine first and that didn't really help but everyone is different. Hope it works for you.
Wave to everyone

was it about new meds Lucinda. I think I have had a slightly better day today but not sure if it was due to new meds or sending DH out this morning to shops to buy some snacks I could bear to eat. Have also slept most of the day. Missed morning vom but body does feel like gearing up for evening one so who knows.

Meerka · 01/07/2015 19:16

confusedeio this is the short summary of the meds that are considered safe in preg (safer than dehydration!)

cyclizine (old fashioned anti-histamine; can make you sleepy). Good with vitamin B6.
Metoclopramide (empties the stomach faster, less to upchuck)
Domperidone (similar)
Prochlorperazine (stemetil/Avomine) (works on your sense of balance; also a travel remedy; can be good for some people).
Promethazine (called Phenergan)(stronger old fashioned anti-histamine, also sleepy-making)
Ondansetron (the strongest and the strongest and many people find the best, but causes constipation, but causes constipation).

so promethazine is similar to cyclizine but stronger.

I am NOT a doctor or pharmacist!!! Please bear that in mind.

If I was in your shoes for a third time, I would be asking to stay on cyclizine (and taking vitamin B6 with it) and also to try Metoclopramide. If I got shaky legs or twitchy, I'd be stopping the metoclopramide and asking for prochlorperazine instead, and/or domperidone while still staying on cyclizine.

If none of that worked okay, I'd be asking for ondansetron.

The NICE guidelines that Mother Hen posted in the first post are the governmental's own Best Practise body guidelines. If you print that out and take it to the doctor's with you that should give them some assistance.
