Pregnancy

Bleeding this morning, advice please

Am 11 weeks pregnant and had a browny discharge this morning and again when I got to work and am a bit worried. Is it better news that it is brown and not bright red?

As it happens I have an appointment with the midwife so I can ask her this afternoon but am a bit panicky.

Can they test for a heartbeat this soon? Don't have my scan until Feb 11 and don't think I can wait and worry that long.

oh Oliveoil - sorry you are going through this.

I had this with a pg in the summer and when it didn't stop for most of the day rang my Early Pg Unit , but they couldn't give me a scan for over a week, but I know others who got one the same day. It wasn't a good outcome for me, but have you got an EPU? I would give them a ring.

As I'm sure you know there are lots of stories on here of pple having fine pgs despite bleeding and I think the fact that it is brown rather than red, meaning it is old blood - is good.

Am thinking of you.

Oliveoil - I had a brown discharge/brown bleeding with dd at 7 wks and then again at 14 wks. It was erosion of the cervix. Doc said brown blood is old blood - bright red is more worrying. You can ask for an earlier scan - I managed to get one both times I bled. I am sure you will be OK.

oliveoil, hugs from me, try not to panic just to say i had this brown spotting for 6 days at 4 weeks and then 9 days at 6 weeks, and i am now 17 weeks and fine, so it will probably be fine- your midwife may reassure you with a heartbeat but also send you for a trans vaginal (internal) scan so they can have a look and see if they can find out what's causing it. xx

OO - I had bleeding at 11 weeks - it was bright red blood and was the most horrifying thing ever. I am now 16+4 and baby is doing fine!

I know how you must be feeling but please please take it that brown discharge is a better sign - i rang my midwife straight away who was on holiday - therefore, rang direct to labour ward on hospital to ask what to do - as it was about 7 on a sunday night they said to contact healthwatch (or whatever that useless service is called) and they will send a doctor out.
Needless to say no-one turned up so i rang hospital again on Monday morning and they arranged for me to visit EPU for a scan on the Tuesday. They scanned me and found a heartbeat straight away - couldn't give a reason for bleeing but said it could be numerous things, further implantation bleeding, and old egg or just caused by doing too much!

Anyway, sorry for rambling, what i am trying to say is it is not necessarily bad - blood being brown is a better sign - i would ring your midwife now just to tell her what is happening, she might be able to get you an EPU appointment straight away.
They should deinitely be able to trace a heartbeat at 11 weeks as they did with me.

Good Luck x Let us know how you get on!

Hi olive, I'm another one who had what you're describing. Mine was at about 5-6 weeks then at about 10-11 weeks.
We have an EPU and I was scanned one both times, the first time it was too early to see even a egg sac but 2nd time it showed all was well and the put it down to plantation.
As I understand it brown discharge is 'better' than red so will feep fingers tightly crossed for you.

Hi Olive Oil.
Any bleeding in pgcy should be taken seriously but most bleeds especially those that are brown result in the pgcy continuing. You are 11 weeks so a Doppler 'could' pick up the heartbeat, but every time I have had any bleeding I always ask for a scan and you are entitled to it, most places are very understanding about bleeding. Internal ones are generally only done before 8 weeks.
It's only fair you know all the reasons for this and most likely is cervical erosion or hormonal changes. Implantation bleeds occur at 7-10 days post fertilisation.
However, there's a small chance of a missed miscarriage which can start by having a little old bleeding. Everyone has so many stories of bleeding and the outcomes that happen but you will only know what your outcome is by having a scan. Don't worry and suffer alone. I have had bleeding every pgcy. 2 have been fine and 2 haven't. I wish you all the very best and hope you manage to get a scan today. Let us know xxxxxx

Oliveoil, poor you, you must be anxious. I've not much to add to what the others have said. I had brown spotting in my first pg and it did lead to a m/c but there are lots of positive stories here so fingers crossed for you.

I think it's unlikely that the m/w will find a heartbeat this early so I would try and get a scan. You won't need an internal one unless the pg has not developed properly. This happenned to me - they started trying to do an external one but the embryo was too small to see and I needed an internal. It wasn't nice but it wasn't as bad as a smear for instance, and in any case I just wanted a definite diagnosis.

Thinking of you.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and advice, feeling a little better but still worried. Don't like the thought of an internal, didn't think you could have those when pg anyway? Haven't had anymore bleeding so hope it was just a one off. Am sat here with my legs crossed as if that will help .

Have got lots to do at work today - typical - so cannot log in much. With m/w at 2.40pm so will try and log on later to let you know how it went.

Thank you all again.

Good luck, hope you get a scan today. Don't worry about the internal one if you do end up. It's very dark in the scan room and no torches/hard hats. It doesn't go anywhere near your cervix.
Thinking of you and hope all is ok for you. xxxxxx

Oliveoil, just sending best wishes. I had some browny bleeding at about 8-10 weeks, I think, at about the time my second period was due. The MW said it was very normal, and everything progressed fine. Anyay, hope yours IS a good news story, and sorry you are having to cope with this anxiety.

I have had 2 bleeds this pregnancy, one with bright red blood at 9 weeks and one with pink then brown blood at 11 weeks. I went along to the EPU and had a scan both times and the baby was fine was great seeing the heartbeat etc.

Try not to worry I was very worried the first time but I never knew how common it was, my advice is to ask for a scan theres nothing better than seeing your tiny baby to reassure you. The Doc said they couldn't find a reason for it, some women just bleed in early pregnancy.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. BEs of luck.

Just got back in from my visit to the m/w and she put my mind at rest. Said that if it had been bright red blood, she would have put me in for a scan straight away, but she thinks I will be ok waiting until Feb 11 for my appointment. I actually feel reasured by her confidence so am going to wait and see what happens and try not to worry. As she said, worrying is doing me or the baby no favours.

Have got strict instructions from dh (who is now a headless chicken 'BLEEDING????? WHAT????' to go to bed and lie down so will be back on here tomorrow when at work.

Had a tiny bit again this morning so phoned the hospital to try and bring my scan forward but they said for me to come into the early pregnancy unit and a midwife would assess me there. Going to go in tomorrow to put my mind at rest. Fingers crossed. Still feel like a nauseous bag of shite so still feel pregnant.

Very promising that you still have pregnancy symptoms. Best of luck for your scan tomorrow.

Best of luck for you scan - if it is any help I haev bled from 6 weeks through to 3 days ago on and off (am now 12 weeks +3 days), haev had 3 scans and bleeding has varied from light and brown to quite a bit and bright red. Baby is still hanging in there and looked very health last time.
Fingers crossed for you but a brown bleed while still feeling pregnant sounds good.

Oliveoil, I hope everything is ok. As others (and your m/w) have said, I think the fact that it was brown blood is a good sign.
