What theme have you decided on for your nursery?

Hi

Just getting into the shopping part of having a baby (this will be my first) - am just looking and picking out items as Im not sure if 19 weeks is a little too early to get started?

I dont know what I am having so am going neutral but want a Disney theme but without being restricted to Winnie the Pooh! I like pooh bear but want other disney characters.

Will only get the basic essentials until baby is born and we know what we are having.

But would love to know what theme you are all going for? Also anyone else manged a Disney them without Winnie?

Am starting to consider doing some small canvas paintings mself rather than have tigger and piglet staring at me.

Hiya, my DS is now almost 5 but before he was born we had picked out a jungle theme but unfortunately we never managed to get it done. I am soo glad we ever as my DS would not have oticed at all and by the time he was in the room he would have his own likes/dislikes.

In the end we painted his room blue and left it blank except a few canvas' and then for his 4th brithday we went out and picked out stuff he would like (Disney Cars).

Don't be tempted to rush out ad spend money on it as I can assure you that your DC will not notice and by the time he/she does they may hate what you have done!

It is tempting but not really eccasary IYSWIM.

If you do want to do aDisney theme how about Choosing a movie (I.E 101 Dalmations) and have matching things like spotty cushions, curtains and a few canvas'. A lot of people do WTP nowadays and even many mooos ago.

You're meant to have a theme? Oh dear. There go my DS's chances of getting into university. I just stuck a cot in the spare room, which was blue any way and bought a balloon mobile from ebay along with some green sheets that were in the bargain bin at Mothercare and aa grobag from TK Maxx!

I'm with DrSeuss I'm afraid. DD had a cot in the spare room, which was only sorted out when she was 5 months old. DD2 (due in June) won't even have that, she'll be in our bedroom for some time to come!

But, OP, your theme does sound lovely. Bear in mind that at this stage it's all about what you and your partner want, and having a nursery ready certainly makes everything more real. I would choose very neutral walls/carpet and then be prepared to change the curtains etc in a couple of years once the baby is old enough to express their own preferences and interests!

Oh I should say DS was in our room for a year before going into his own.

We've kept our nursery the blue it was when we bought the house (having a girl), and have just bought a few nice framed pictures, none if which are linked. I'm glad I didn't go for a theme as lots of people have already bought us beautiful gifts, including room decorations and toys which wouldn't necessarily fit in with one theme.

Now if only she'd hurry up and arrive- due today!

I didn't have a theme. we were in a rented flat with ds1 so he just had a few of those peelable sticker things, and some nice unisex curtains (we didn't know what we were having)

the other 2 were in with me for well over a year and then moved into their older brothers' room so never had a nursery

I'm not a fan of themes. I quite like rooms that are basically fairly plain with a nice eclectic mixture of soft furnishings and accessories.

For this one (DC3) we first of all need to clear out the acres of crap in the spare room .

The plan then is to paint it a lovely creamy yellow that I've already stumbled across, re-carpet (neutral cream) and then add colours with curtains and all of the bits and pieces.

A friend of mine who's a fabulous artist has said that she will work with our DDs to 'invent' some bizarre animals that can be painted onto the walls in all sorts of fabulous colours. For me, it's ideal as they get to feel involved.

It's all in my head, we just need to face the big clear out first .

Oh, and of course, it's completely for me. The baby couldn't give a damn and will no doubt be in our room for the first year or so.

Lol - I should point out theme is all about me really not baby! Bubs wont know whats in there of course but I would like to do the room in a theme. And I love Disney. So Pozzled is very right!

You dont have to have a them of course DrSeuss - but its my first and its something to take my mind off constantly feeling crppy! Online shopping is just not as tiring as normal shopping plus you can shop round and find more bargains :)

Im still opting for a neutral look so I can change and people have offered to buy bits so not really getting much. Curtains are already neutral too

I'm a fan of "organic" style. The primary colours theme in DD's nursery emerged from the mobile we were given and a cot tidy my mum made. Her new room has pinkish rug and curtains but is otherwise white and pretty much has a "these are all my toys and books" theme!

I've gone for hodge podge from mamas and papas becuase it has 20% off at the moment. I have only bought a few bits then painted the nursery cream and adding other splashes of colour that are similar.
Love it!

Awww, doing the canvasses yourself sounds lovely.

Dd1 went in the spare room rather than 'nursery'. Dd2 will eventually go in dd1's current room, theme: bombsite!

Oh and these sort of threads generally attract competitive neglectful comments (mine included ), but just ignore the rotters and enjoy your planning!

It's early days for me but I'm thinking of a Hellraiser theme. I think the chains hanging over the cot will be great for baby's motor skills, and my mum is crocheting a Pinhead plushee. It'll be AWESOME!!

No in all seriousness I am sure I will have some kind of theme, like you JimmyChoo17 it's my first and it's more for me and hubby than the baby , but I don't want to jinx anything by thinking about it too much. We need to declutter the room first too lol.

How about Nemo for your Disney theme?

As a Winnie (well actually I lurve Eeyore :o) fanatic I should say that whilst the books are A.A Milne the cartoon concept, which I believe is probably the theme, is Disney.

Did you never have the shopping thing with your PFB? I went a bit daft with DS but now I realise if I was to have another I would not buy half of the junk essentials that I did then :o

Bt ejoy it whilst the novelty is there.

my theme was 'seldom used spare room which we will still have to put Granny in sometimes'.

seriously, I once read in a baby magazine 'Decorating the nursery for a new arrival is the most exciting thing you will ever do!'

Bloody hell...... if don't like the thread then don't post.

Winnie the pooh Stuff I have seen is marketed with Disney on which adds the inevitable extra cost on. Who cares who came up with it, that wasn't my question!!!???

Talk about having to justify your self on mn.....I could understand if I posted about using razor blades in place of a dummy.

Am liking your post tho Katie....pinhead...if bubs can sleep thru that can sleep through anything. But wouldn't want to steal your idea so am thinking nightmare on elm street!

Gosh, some of you are right miseries.

I liked decorating my kids rooms - and not for the shopping part (though it was kinda fun - mostly pound shops, charity shops and ebay here tbh)

We did jungle (but turned into garden ) - I painted grass around the bottom half and blue for sky along the top. Green carpet. Some flowers and bug things.

When we moved I talked lots to dd about her 'rainbow room' which basically means lots of colour!! Ds now has the rainbow room (and inherited some bright 'digger' curtains) and dd recently moved into the box room. She wanted a flowery room - we went on a hunt roud the house for flowery cushions, duvet covers and accessories. And bought a flower light in Ikea.

I like themes far better than the tasteful magnolia/Cath Kidston nurseries in magazines - but be creative. You don't have to buy loads.
