Farley's rusks in a babies bottle?

Newmum0113 · 07/12/2013 22:09

Hi all, I asked this on someone else's thread, but I wanted to get more opinions/anecdotes please?!

DD is 8 weeks old and DH was considering we should put a rusk in her last bottle (11pm) to help her go through the night.

We aren't doing this yet, and may not do it, but both our parents did it with us and our siblings.

Thanks for your replies.

Erm I don't know how to say this politely but please don't be so bloody stupid.

Nooooooo don't do it. It's known to be a choking risk these days. Never add anything to a baby's bottle.

If you want to give her rusks then wait until she is about 6 months (17 weeks at the ABSOLUTE earliest) but mash it up in a bowl and feed it with a spoon.

The advice is no solids until 4 months at the very earliest. Six months ideally. There is a choking risk with rusk in bottle. Why don't you talk to your health visitor about it?

Op never add to bottle. Speak to your hv if any concerns.

putting anything in a bottle other than milk is a major chiking hazard.

In addition to this your baby's digestive system is not ready for anything other than milk.

Also, putting a rusk in will fill baby up without giving the nutrients baby needs. What baby needs right now is milk on demand. babies feed at night, they are biologically programmed to do so. thousands of years of evolution has gone into those feeding patterns, it can't be wrong Smile .

ok you are fine. But you are an anecdote and not scientifically backed research data. waiting till 6 months to give anything other than milk will not harm your baby. giving something other than milk now may cause harm. Not worth the risk really.

Parents used to give babies opium and all sorts to quieten them, don't think we do that any more either...

Don't mean to sound sarcastic but this is where you DO need to follow current guidelines. Time of weaning is up to you but 8 weeks too early by anyone's standards; rusks in bottles absolutely not and they are full of sugar as well so consider what foods you will wean on.

There's loads of info on the NHS website.

Rusks are classed as solid food- of course there is a choking risk if you put it in a bottle!

A baby needs to be able to sit up mostly unsupported before they are ready to go on to solids, precisely so they don't choke.

Op I second what everyone else is saying, you really shouldn't give your baby anything in its bottle. Have your tried hungry baby milk if you are desperate? I know people sometimes aren't a fan of using that on mn, but it's infinitely preferable to adding rusks to a bottle!

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/12/2013 22:18

No no no absolutely not. The only think that goes in a bottle is milk.

Food should never be given any eArkier than 17 weeks. And a rusk in a bottle is a choking haZard.

Ridiculous idea. You shouldn't be giving your baby anything but milk until around 6 months ideally, never before 17 weeks - and sugary gluten biscuit is hardly ideal weaning foods.

Don't put anything but milk in your baby's bottle, you risk choking her.

VesuviusPoovius · 07/12/2013 22:18

They also contain wheat which is a no no until 6 months because of potential gluten intolerance.

Where is your DH getting his info from?

OP my mum suggested this when my DD was about 8 weeks, she was a hungry baby. Thankfully I had the sense to tell my mum no.

Babies feed at might, I know it's hard going and you're probably shattered but don't risk it, it can lead to digestive problems later on in life. Rusks are full of sugar, no to mention the choking risk.

Days of sleepless nights will soon pass, I promise.

just no

p.s. rusks are chock full of sugar and most contain gluten. Giving cereals at that age is also linked to coeliacs disease so dont do it

No, for every reason given so far.

It's a choking hazard. Babies, wake up in the night, it's what they do! Yes it's exhausting but putting rusks in her bottle is not the answer. She'll start to sleep through when she's ready. Plus they need all their calories from milk, not food. Food isn't recommended now until 6 months, the earliest 4, as their digestive systems aren't ready.

Please don't do it.

Have you tried dream feeding just before you go to bed? Literally pick dc up and give bottle? No need to wake they will just tAke bottle and should go later through? I know some people will flame but much better than rusks!! Confused

Oh give over. What do you think this is? Bounty?

OF COURSE YOU DO NOT PUT RUSK IN A BABY'S BOTTLE.

Report
EauRougemasTree · 07/12/2013 22:31

No no no. Nooooo. Frequent waking is totally normal for an 8 week old. It sucks, but it's normal.

Ridiculous idea

Report
ems1910 · 07/12/2013 22:31

Never.

At 8 weeks a baby isn't supposed to go through the night, I know in our culture it is assumed they should. Why does DH think she should be? Is 8 weeks a classic growth spurt time? I can't remember right now but someone might. Certainly at 12 weeks there is a growth spurt and baby will feed more, still too early to wean according to current guidelines.

I am 32 and even when I was a baby my mum was told not to add rusk to bottles because of the choking risk.

Don't feel bad for asking OP because if I'd listened to my mum I'd have done it myself! ! Thank goodness for forums like this where you get some sensible advice

Nonononono. Really, don't.

And I say that as somebody who was raised on rusk in her bottle - as was common 50 40 years ago.

Apart from all the potential dangers associated with that (allergy being the main one, and all sorts of unhelpful feeding associations) it is hugely unlikely to help your DD to sleep 'through the night' (which by definition means going 4-5 hrs in one stretch btw, not going from 7 to 7).

My 4 DSs slept through at 10 months, 16 weeks, 1 year and 2 years - the ones that were older were well weaned Grin and still it took them that long.

Report
K8Middleton · 07/12/2013 22:36

Sorry op. I was a bit arsey. Good for you for asking, and no, totally normal for them not to sleep through for weeks and weeks and weeks.
