'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

- make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats

- ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc

- start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list

- have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)

- if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead

- make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!

- look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk

- think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet

- similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can

- fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

- read, read, read and read more about low carbing have a look at the resources on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness ; there's loads of good stuff here that will help you get your head around what low carbing is all about

- and have a look here some lovely recipes to inspire you

- and here is a link to Bootcamp rules ; make sure you are familiar with them by 13/1!!! grin

Hi BIWI do you still calorie count on Bootcamp? I have been using MyFitnessPal so what ratio of fat/protein/carbs should I be setting? Also how does fibre factor in? Thanks

Am starting to up my water consumption on readiness for next week.

For anyone new to LC, this is a wonderful WOE. Healthy, tasty, filling and secret. Noone will know unless you tell them. This was very important to me at the start.

flowers for lovely BIWI. you have changed my life in a wonderful way. I am still 1.5 st down from 18 months ago. Would like to lose another stone to be properly slim.

I am going to Marks and Spencer tomorrow.

I have a 40 euro shopping voucher, just for meeeeeeeeeee.

I will buy pate, packets of chicken, thick cream, pork scratchings (the only place in Ireland I can get them, and they cost a bomb), some nice salady stuff with baby gem lettuce for making wraps and some fresh salmon (if I haven't run out of money by then).

What else should I get (apart from post it notes with dire warnings that i will be lopping off hands if anyone touches my stuff hmm)?

Sorry that is probably a ridiculously basic question but this is my first delve into low carb. I know I'm terribly addicted to carbs and feel absolutely crap. My day consists of carb binges but due to silly amounts of exercise, I don't need to lose weight.
Is this plan suitable for me? Should I adjust it in some way so I maintain weight?

Oh, good idea, Pseudo. I like any type of salmon, but need to keep the boys' hands off it.

Whoknows, it is a healthy way of eating for everyone as far as I know. If you didn't want to actually lose weight you could go straight to bootcamp light (so include nuts and fruit, especially berries).

I know for me I can't cut down on carbs very well, so I'm better off doing the whole hog when it comes to pasta/rice/potatoes/sweet stuff.

Arbuthnot, there is no calorie counting as such. I know from the past that MFP allows silly amounts of carbs - I changed the ratios when I tried it before. I think bootcamp is simpler.

Can I recommend m and a pre cooked streaky bacon rashers? They are about 1.50 for a pack and much tastier than porkers. Crumble a couple into a mashed egg or an avo for lunch and you are made. Yum.

The point of bootcamp, though, is to eat natural, unprocessed food so these should be used sparingly. If you can resist of course....

I think that I will have to calorie count in some form too, at least initially, as I am really bad at portion control and need to get a grip on that for mine and the children's general health. If I change the ratios on MFP to 45/30/25 fat/protein/carbs it gives me 90g protein, 60g fat, 75g carbs and 25g fibre. Does that sound a feasible starting point?

Hi BIWI

Ive just started this week doing the Harcombe diet. I am really enjoying it actually, and only a couple of days in so not really hardcore as yet I suppose but do you know if there is any/ much difference between bootcamp and this?

I know with Harcombe I haven't had to actually 'count' any carbs, do you count carbs on bootcamp or just be very aware of the carbs in things and make choices from there?

Starting properly tomorrow and really looking forward to it.

Have been drinking required amount of water with no difficulty for the first time on this WOE by making sure I have a full 2L bottle at room temp. So much easier for me to drink.

Arbuthnot - nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! No calorie counting! The whole idea of Bootcamp is that you don't have to count or weigh anything. Just follow the rules and you will be fine.
