I suffer from recurrent thrush. It drives me insane. Five times a month is not unusual. I live on clotrimazole, fluconazole, miconazole, nystatin, white wine vinegar, soya milk. I'm so fed up!!!!! I saw a mega lovely consultant 3 months ago who prescribed nystan tablets (1,000,000 units a day for 28 days for anyone who knows what I'm on sbout!) and fluconazole 150mg once a month and the first month was great, second month not so good and now I'm back to square one. What next?????!!!!!!!!! Anybody else got any answers???????!!!!!!!! xxx

I was exactly the same as you. I had thrush for 7 years off and mainly on and made my life a misery. I sympathise loads.
What helped me and infact (touch wood) cured me was probiotic yoghurts. Not had any since having one a day for about a year. Thrush comes from the bowel so I guess having more friendly bacteria was what I needed!
Good luck xx

I don't think all those antifungals are doing you any good.

I would suggest a trip to a recommended nutritionist.

You may have Candida and need to be on a yeast and sugar free diet to get rid of it.

I assume you have had swabs to confirm thrush and not bacterial vaginosis or similar?

Pro-biotics are def. good. Also tea-tree oil is good, if you see a herbalist you can get pessaries with this in. Eat garlic and avoid processed foods esp. yeasty foods like bread and fermented ones like cheese and pickle, and sugar which will feed the thrush.

I agree with moondog, I am very wary of flucanazole etc.

Oh bloody hell Ammy.

I'm sure you will get more advice from others but could you ask your GP for referral to a specialist?
(Who would deal with this?Gynaecologist?)

Tea tree oil is good, if a bit stinky. Herbs of Grace used to sell them, try a google if you don't fancy seeing a herbalist.

Sounds more like candidia, have you seen a nutritionist?

I almost definitely think i have candida- bloating, upset stomachs etc. but that is waht the nystan was for- to clear my bowel of yeast.

There is a good book on Candida but I can't for the life of me remember what it's called, sorry. I think it may just be called the Candida diet. Apparently with fluconazole etc you can get a rebound effect which is when it gets better initially then worse. They recommend lots of emphasis on diet cutting back especially on fruit and fruit juice, sugar, bread, mushrooms etc plus taking lots of supplements - grapefruit seed extract, garlic especially. There is also a natural alternative to Nystatin but I can't recall what it is. Garlic is antifungal - have you tried whacking a clove of garlic up your fanjo? Basically as I'm sure you know it's a systemic thing and drugs often just mask it, not cure it. Maybe you could try looking on Amazon or googling for the book - sorry I gave my copy away but it was really good. Oh the other thing is to treat your partner if you have one as you can reinfect on another with vaginal thrush anyway.

i heard about the garlic too, wrapped in something! also i think bicarbonate of soda.. i sympathise.

Just remembered the natural alternative to Nystatin is Caprylic acid - it's dereived from coconut, think you can get it from Holand and Barret. This book makes the point that most conventional doctors are pretty ignorant about yeast and usually offer drugs 'cos they pretty much don't know what else to do for you. So if you can afford it then I'd second the suggestion to find an alternative such as a nutritionist.

Just a thought - how are your stress levels? MInd body connection and all that. I am sure the candida is making you stressed but I mean apart from that!

I think yes you are meant to wrap the garlic in a piece of muslin. Also eat it, lots. Your breath might stink but it's better than an itchy vag!

I've come to the conclusion that I probably suffer some sort of yeast intolerance too and seem to constantly have thrush in some form - either not too bad or terribly uncomfortable. I take acidophilus capsules daily which seem to help and a fluconozole tablet or some other thrush treatment every so-often - I try not to take too many of those. I honestly can't see myself living without bread, so try and live with it, but I think if I cut out the bread and marmite/bovril type stuff (full of yeast), I might do a lot better. Not that I'd wish thrush on anyone, but it helps me to know that i'm certainly not the only one with recurrant attacks. I hate the invasion of swabs though, so rarely see the GP about it. By the sound of your experiences though, I'm not sure if I'd get any further if I did.
