I would still get it checked out though with NHS direct. Iron in hhigh doses isn't good.

and what's with the big white space on the thread, or is it just me that's seeing it?

well if you think they are fine, why are you asking?!

everyone has said seek medical help and you seem determined not to

iron overdose can be fatal in children

probably 5 kiddy tablets won't have enough in them but none of us know that and I'd always check

OK.

I would get it checked but wouldn't panic.

Each tab is 6mg iron so 5 tabs is 30mg and 2 tabs are 10mg.

A quick google suggests that 20mg per kg body weight is required to cause illness - so they will still be significantly below this level.

Furthermore 1 tablet is less than half of the recommended daily intake for a 3 year old. So your toddler will have taken little more than a full days recommened intake. Your 5yo will have only taken 2 days intake for a 3 yo so I suspect that this is further evidence that the impact will be minimal.

iron supplements are a very common cause of accidental overdose in children.phone NHS direct NOW

Symptoms of overdose can include unconsciousness, paleness, erratic heart rate, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or green diarrhea/tarry stools.

Please find a phone and call NHS Direct. Borrow one from a neighbour, go to a phone box, anything - that link says not for children under three, and one tablet only for children over three. They contain 43% of an adult's iron RDA, so five tablets is over 200% of the recommended amount of iron for an adult.

Slightly mad I was going to type the same kind of thing.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 26/03/2009 19:52

I am not determined not to but since I don't drive and have no phone working I am trying to establish how bad it is before getting them dressed and traipsing them out in the cold, and upsetting my mum and dad by having to use their phone and stay there half the night waiting for NHS direct to phone back. Having both dd's up a lot later than they should be.

wasn't trying to be horrible just would hate something to happen or one of them to get ill

Report

But of course this relies on teh fact that the 5 tablets and 2 tablets described by a 5yo is accurate.

As others say it is serious. 10 tablets would be fatal for a toddler weighing less than 10kg according to this but from what you describe your toddler is unlikely to have taken this amount. But can you guarantee it?

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 26/03/2009 19:54

can you not pop round to a neighbour's house and borrow their phone?

Please phone. It's 90% likely that they are both fine and that you will curse the fact that you dragged them out for nothing. But if they're in the other 10% then an iron overdose is really serious (as everyone else has said). It's not something that I would mess about with.

Report
SlightlyMadScotland · 26/03/2009 19:57

And and I am really sorry I have mis-calculated. 100 tablets would be the fatal dose which makes more sense.

Report
SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 26/03/2009 19:58

Dd2 only sucked her's and spat them out. I know that because they are on the floor. Dd1 only gave her two because 'she didn't like them because they taste like grass'.

okay so 2st7 is 16 kilos, which means dd1 could consume 320 mg before illness? And dd1 spat hers out so I'm not worried about her. Plus she is not much lighter than dd1 anyway.
