Percy, Cuthbert or Coriolanus?

DH and I can't decide. We are thinking of Coriolanus Percy.

Don't want a name that there are loads of in the same school/nursery. Would prefer to be the only one. Needs to be reasonably traditional/not made up (DH's criteria).

I'd be worried about "anus" as a nn.

Percy is a Weasley - he came good in the end, but was rather an arse for several of the books.

Cuthbert is nice - I only know one in RL, and he's about 14.

Nothing with anus in it, sorry.

Sorry, not keen on any of those options.

They are all dreadful imho. Sorry but I can't think of anything positive to say about any of them.

There's a fine line between names that say "I'm an individual" and those that say "Please Kick Me". Those three unfortunately, for me, fall firmly into the latter camp...Plus he'll be 12 by the time he or his mates can spell Coriolanus! (and...nickname - anus?!!! No!)

How about something like Dante, Anton, Lukas?

I have the perfect solution for you - Coriolanus was originally called Caius Martius

So there's your classical first and middle names sorted, and you're secretly calling him Coriolanus without anyone immediately thinking of bottom jokes.

They are all utterly apalling imo. Percy and Cuthbert are just nasty and Coriolanus is impossible for a small boy to say or for anyone to hear without sniggering.

Orlando?

Ernest?

Frank?

Ptolemy? (Tolly for short)

I would rule out anything with anus in.

I like Percival better than Percy as you can use Val as a nn and Percy is a teeny bit like a pig's name.

I think Cuthbert is the least verstile of the 'Bert' names as Cuth on its own is awful wheras Rob, Al, Gil and Hugh are all ok (if not to everyones tastes). Not a reason not to pick it though.

Now I'm hoping to goodness this is a late-night saturday joke name thread, I'd hate to have the poor little chap saddled with Caius - I mean, people wouldn't know whether to pronounce it kay-us or 'keys' like the college.

No no no no no no, oh dear me no, I don't think you are trying hard enough.

How about Caesar Falstaff Balthazar Jolyon Adolf?

I think that has a nice ring to it.

I see your Coriolanus, and I raise you Titus Andronicus.

Cuthbert is nice, Bert or Bertie for short.

The other two are not good, although nice names in theory, in practice too much room for teasing. Sorry.

All awful I'm afraid. Your child will be bullied.

My cousin was called Cuthbert, until he changed it aged 11 to something much more normal (his middle name) and hasn't looked back since.

Cuthbert is not nice - joke or not I think we need to be very clear on that. It's right up there with Archibald. (Though Archie is nice of course)

Clary · 30/10/2010 23:59

Cuthbert is the best of those choices IMO, esp if you go for nn Bertie.

I think with Coriolanus or Percy you are fairly safe from having any others in nursery.

I wouldn't go for Coriolanus really, it's a bit of a mouthful isn't it? And unlike, say, Maximus, it doesn't have an obvious and manageable nickname.

I too wonder if this is a joke....

LoopyLoupGarou · 31/10/2010 00:01

Of course it's a joke... surely?

I hear Lice when I say Lysander. Loving Percival and Titus and Earnest. Not sure about the Ernie (cause of the Bert and Ernie).

Hadn't thought of the Coriolanus angle. Thanks.

Really excited know about Percival Titus and Perseus. DH really loves Horace too.

So
Percival Horace
Titus Perseus (Is that a bit poncey? Sorry to be rude)
Horace Titus
Perseus Percival

I like Dante (but hear Dirty). Maybe I'm jus tired?

Really appreciate the advice.

Love Percy, but I'd steer well clear of anything ending with or containing 'anus'! x

what the fuck? this is a joke, surely? HATE when people give their children names that are all about their own insecurities.
