AIBU?

To want people to stop telling me to straighten my sodding hair!

I realise this is rather dull but my god it's annoting me!

I have rather curly hair...ok VERY curly hair! is frizzy unless cut properly, even then its out of control!

If I grow it long the curls disaper!

It's taken years for me to like my hair (I now love it!), was bullied over it at school and i nearly shaved it off on more then one occasion!

I had it cut short yesterday so the curls are mad! I love it! but whenever I do this people say
"Oh why dont you straighten it?" "you looked like youve been plugged into the mains!"
"it's very, um, curly isn't it" "its very, well, Big!"
"worst hair is either curly or red...least your only 50% there" FWIW I would kill for really red hair! its amazing!

Put a pictur on Facebook and someone commented saying "Bloody 'ell Milk! you know you can STRAIGHTEN it!" and another saying "christ on a bike thats insane! god id hate my hair if it was like that"!

Do people really feel the need to comment on it?!

I told you it was dull!

Well now I want to see a picture. You make yourself sound like Marge Simpson!!

And no, you know YANBU. If people don't like it tell them to stop bloody looking.

I think your hair sounds ace!

I always remember reading about Annie Lennox saying how she finds it very sad how girls all want to straighten their hair these days to fit in. I agree and it's partly why, apart from a short interval, i've always had short hair (plus I love annie!!!)

rejoice in the difference, I say.

Commenting on it is one thing, but your friends' comments are just mean! I have incredibly thick hair and keep it short because it's much more manageable, and I get fed up of people asking me why I don't grow it. But I think it's one of those things, if your hair's long people tell you to cut it, if it's curly they suggest straightening it.
But YANBU. Cheeky buggers

Hair straighteners are punishingly common, in my opinion.

People can be quite cheeky and invasive over hair - I know I have three foot of it and random strangers ask me if it is "real" and try to touch it. It is very rude.

YANBU.

Last time I had my hair cut at Saks (about a month ago) the hairdresser told me curls were back in fashion. Straightened hair is on the way out apparently. She was an extremely trendy looking hairdresser - not my usual type at all!

Hi Milk

I have really curly hair too and have finally found out how to cut it so the curls don't drop out! And I've started using the curly girl method, so it's more managable.

I've never had anyone say I oughta straighten my hair, perhaps I look like the type that would bop them on the nose?!

I go teased in school too and hated my curls for years but now my DS has lovely curls and I finally appreciate their uniqueness!!

its just as cheeky to say hairstrighteners are common>>>> runs hand over silky smooth shining straight locks

'Yeah, I did straighten it once but it looked really boring'

Works nicely for me, and mine isn't even that curly.

I think your hair sounds lovely.

I could've written your post Milk. I have very thick curly hair. I even own a pair of GHDs. Now if someone were to put an extra couple of hours in the day and transport me to a place where there were no DCs to bother me or even better, pay me so I didn't have to go to work, then, I might have time to straighten it. But as it is, I don't.

I agree with Mango that it's sort of sad to see teenage girls these days because they all have the same long straightened hair style with those flicks at the fringe. No individuality at all.

this is a fashions thing - back in the 80's people would pay 100's to have their hair permed and dyed to form the 'bed head' copper or, more commonly blonde head of curls,

now sleek smooth hair is it.

i do thin kit is harder to look 'smart' with rizzy hair as even tied back, the front stands up...though that can look quite attractive OTOH.

people saying things like that = cheeky buggers.

You're quite right EggyAllenPoe - I spent a fortune perming my hair in the 80s. The only winners here are the hairdressers & styling product manufacturers. Even my son has started straightening his hair every morning which makes him look like Sideshow Bob in my opinion but I guess parents know nothing about fashion do they?

it's just plain bloody rude to suggest you need to change your hair.

i also spent a fortune in the 80s sitting in hair salons with hair soaking up perming lotion. and i would stink of it for days after!

curls are gorgeous!

Report
Lutyens · 18/04/2010 17:36

How rude!

FWIW I have poker straight hair and spent most of the 80s having people tell me "you can perm it, you know?" Yes, I can, but I don't bloody want to! Now leave me the hell alone.

cece, my hairdresser told me curls are on their way in too. I nearly burst into tears.

Report
JaneS · 18/04/2010 17:36

Madam, if that's aimed at me: I would like it fine for someone to call my hair boring, if I had been so rude as to tell them to change the way they wore theirs!
