AIBU?

to think women who use their husband's email address are submissive stepford wives who don't have a life of their own?

Seriously, is it that hard to work out how to get your own email address?

The ones that share are bad enough e.g. '[email protected]' or whatever, but I've seen quite a few that simply have the man's name as the email address.

Yes I know there are more important things to worry about, but come on ladies, this is 2009!

Some people are not computer literate enough to set up more than one, my DH uses mine because my log in is my PC admin's and it has outlook connected to it and he has a work email.

How about when they've got their own, but the husband set it up?

we used to have that before DH and I split up. The account was in his name - we used the "default" email address that we got when it was first set up years ago.

Now our primary email address is in my name as we continued the account I set up when we were separated

I checked/sent most of the emails though.

Was no big deal - you can usually tell by the subject/sender whether an email is for you or not (rather like using the same letter box for your snail mail ).

alwayslooking - just the same here. We have a shared email so that all our emails end up in the same box. DW also gets to check all my emails as they get sent to her Blackberry as well.

Stepford husband.

I think a lot of it is historical and happened when email was new and people have never bothered to change.

It does make me chuckle when I see it, but nothing more than that.

YABU. DH doesn't get much chance to check his emails - best they all come to my email address so I can tell him about them. Does that make him a doormat?

Report
ABetaDad · 14/10/2009 08:48

No. DW does the same for me. Just practical.

We each have our own home email addresses but it goes to the same inbox. I use my work email for most things anyway so I can read them from my phone - now it would be wierd if that was in my husbands name!

what about when a wife has a secret hidden email address she uses to transfer deal with her secret hidden bank account for her secret hidden runnaway fund?

I find shared email accounts deeply weird and have great difficulty communicating with anyone on a shared email address.

You can think all you want dear but we share becasue its permanently on the business emailo so its easier when it all comes in together
We do h have separate files and addressesand tbh you can lose anything you might want beneath the wealth of freecycle / etc spam that comes in anyway LOL

(its not dippy and mrs dippy though, it has a generic title)

Report
FlamingoBingo · 14/10/2009 08:52

Why deeply wierd, BonsoirAnna?

DH would never, ever get his emails if I didn't pick them up for him.

YABU. Tis none of your business how others arrange their emails.

Why shouldn't people share an email address or share their husband's? We share everything else!

After so many years together boundaries are blurred and we have no secrets. I don't open his post but he wouldn't care if I did, nor would I care if he openned mine.

Strange to think it's a problem

If you don't use email much (or at all) then it doesn't really matter. I expect there's a fair few MNers who used their email to sign up to MN but don't actually do emailing in their daily lives. My Mum doesn't send any emails on the average week.

i have a full time job, 3 kids, a dh and a dog.
i have three hotmail accounts and i dont understand the 'i haven't got the time' argument pmsl. if you have time to log on you have time to look through your e-mails fgs.

maybe - you cant be arsed
you haven't got the inclination even

i completely undestand if its a business address - i think thats a diferent thing entirely.

in general therefore - i think it is odd that people dont have their own e-mail addy.

DH doesn't have time to even log on most days, Custy.

i agree totally - get your own email address!!

I don't want to be sending chatty/jokey/gossipy emails to my friends and have their husbands read them...what is wrong with you??

Report
zazen · 14/10/2009 08:59

How silly!
A Stepford wife wouldn't need an email address...

We have work emails which go to one machine, and gmail for personal, non-work stuff which can be read on any - I know his login details and he knows mine.
I wonder what that says

Picante · 14/10/2009 08:59

Thanks Anna and Custy... two renowned mners agreeing with me... I rest my case.

I want to sound massively young here and say that for my generation (at the very least those who went to university) it's pretty much inconceivable to not have your own email address and to check it nearly every day.

Picante - you'd better be kidding with your post of 08:59:04.

But the point is, people who don't do a job that involves access to the internet in the day, and who are busy with children/hobbies etc. all evening, don't have time to log on every day. DH logs on on his one or two days off each week, but just can't do it every day.
