Strange gift

Just hoping to get some idea about the gift I have received. Quick background, sent some food to the teachers at my DD's school as part of a celebration. Next day many teachers thanked me in person, expressing their like for that food item.

Today DD handed me a gift that had been passed by her teacher, to say thank you for the food I sent. It's nicely wrapped in tissue paper & ribbon, but upon opening I saw 7-9 chillies ( red and yellow).

I am not sure what to make of it. Is it an omen thing or some exotic chillies, maybe? I feel it's rude ask her what it is for. Any ideas?

What food did you send in?
Are they hoping you can make more using the chillis?

Perhaps she grows them?

Assuming the food was HM teacher thinks you like cooking so did this as a thank you so you can enjoy using them.

Not strange IMO.

She probably grows them and thought you might be able to use them. Some people give homemade jam or biscuits, some give chillies!

May be she grows them, I agree. Would it be rude to ask?

She probably grows the chillis and thought it would be nice.

I think that's a really sweet gift. I am a fan of both gifting and receiving interesting food items - the last gift I bought someone was a chunk of honeycomb from a local farm!

She knows you cook. She's gifted you an ingredient. I like it.

An omen?

Good grief. Do you read the daily mail by any chance?

I'm intrigued by the sort of omen a handful of chillies could portend. Volcanic ring of fire?

In Hinduism the chillies left hanging with a lemon at the door is supposed to ward off evil eye. Like wise in some beliefs chillies kept in a oil jar brings good luck. I was just checking before I used them in cooking.

Ask her how she uses them. My omen is: curry! 😋

My Mum grows different things and often takes some for the librarian when she takes her books back. Just to be used not for an omen

Try making a chilli jam/relish? You could gift her a jar back!

You could make her some chilli jam with them. It's lovely with pork and also nice to spice up veggies.

It's quite clever really. I reckon she liked your cooking so much, she's obligated you to provide her with more food....

Ah I've heard of this. It means in the next 7 days some scary Japanese woman will crawl out of your TV and shove chillis up your arse.

Oh OP this did make me laugh! Is there any other food item that you would have seen as an omen? I mean if you research it, there's probably loads of stuff around it but I can't believe you thought of it at all.

I don't like chillies but my first thought woukd def be food rather than omen!

Oh and I don't find it a strange gift, just a foodie one
Now wondering what you'd think if she gave you garlic...hopefully you wouldn't worry about a local vampire invasion....
