AIBU?

To think beach volleyball is just an excuse for folk to perv at athletes in skimpy gear

I don't understand why it is even a distinct sport from normal volleyball. Surely it came about just because some folk were playing it on a beach? Why not then have beach gymnastics, or beach football or beach archery?

Totally! Bring it on!

Thing is they don't have to wear the skimpies. The Egyptian team I watched the other day didn't and I much preferred their outfits.

But why have the distinction between volleyball and beach volleyball but not in any other sport? It's weird.

I thought it was quite interesting to watch the Egyptian and German team playing the other day.

Presumably the playig surface makes a difference - isn't it like the difference between skiing and dry-slope skiing?

the clothing is chosen for other reasons than practicality in other sports. Jessica Ennis has to run about in her bra and knickers (not that she doesn't look very good in them) Male athletes doing the same sport wear a vest and longer shorts that don't risk disappearing where shorts shouldn't.

that said, this might be to do with our twerp of a kit designer. Just seen a pic of the female Aussie basketball players - loose vests and shorts, things that you can ignore while wearing.

just seen the photo of Egyptians vs Germans. Neither outfit is exactly practical, is it?

I just read that there used to be a maximum width that the pants of the players could be. Grim.

beach volleyball is a very different event to volleyball, avoiding the distinction would be why have pool and open water swimming, or why have the 100m or the marathon, or the cycling road race, BMX and track cycling, or lots of other events where variations exist.

The outfits look shit though.

Mr Elbows tried to pretend he wasn't looking at the bums by giving me an "interesting" talk about the design of the beach volleyball stadium! Bless him. Grin

I was wondering something similar watching the sychronised diving last night.

Obviously I appreciate clothing has to be tight so you can see the movement and lines of the body during the dive more clearly but why do the trunks have to be so small? The blokes' had pubes sprouting out of the top of them!

Gents: do you find it off-putting from your sporting endeavours to have to be constantly pulling up your swimming costume and ensuring your genitals are covered? I have a solution for you - wear bigger shorts!

By the way, that link is safe. It's just a link to the daily mash site.

There is beach football. Not in the Olympics, but it is a thing. It's regulated by FIFA and they have a World Cup.

Yes, it was noticeable that quite a few of the divers were frantically adjusting their trunks underwater last night.

And out of the water!

It was

Be completely dry
Climb ladder
Adjust trunks
Do one dive
Adjust trunks underwater
Get out
Adjust trunks
React to score
Adjust trunks
Get in a nice hot tub
or shower
Adjust trunks in shower

Veryproudvolleyballmum Yes, the divers and gymnasts outfits also look shit - why do the female gymnasts need arm covers when the men don't. Of course I agree that the kit is often appropriate for the sport, doesn't stop it looking shit - that was my point - why would you perv on athletes with such shit looking clothes?

Yes Veryproudvolleyballmum, but why do female gymnasts need arm covers? As you noted the beach volleyball outfits are due to sand. The divers outfits are so the judges can see the bodies - all sensible.

Arm covers of female gymnasts don't protect them from anything, and the men don't wear them, so protection doesn't sound likely. Sorry you think my thinking the outfits look shit is a negative against the sport, it's actually a positive I'd say, as it means I can't imagine why anyone would watch the sport for pervy reasons, so they're only watching it for the sporting reasons!

Agree OP. Such fine sights to see too!

It's a lot like the dancers not wearing a lot when they dance at times. It all depends on the function of the clothing. And if the dress design adds anything to the overall purpose of the work.

Loose clothing at beach volleyball would be difficult for the competitors.
