very noisy party and the police say they can't help

Two doors down a very noisy party. DJ in the back garden. Random people screaming and squealing. All our windows are closed and it's still loud. I called the police and they say they can't do anything. Apparently at weekends they don't do noise calls, only crimes. The person on the telephone told me I need to ring Environmental Health and they don't answer calls at the weekend. WTF? Do any Mumsnetters know what to do?

Your local council should have an OOH number for EH and noise nuisance.

Also, if you're friends with any of your neighbours then get them to phone and do the same....

They won't do anything sadly. If there is fighting, drug dealing or some other crime they will but just noise they don't have time to deal with.

Thanks for your help! The woman I spoke to said there was no OOH number for Environmental health but I could make a complaint online. I doubt that that will help. Dodo, maybe we do live in the same street! We can both complain then.

Claw finger through a surround system with the speakers against the neighbours wall worked. We started at 7am and gave them a 1-2 min blast every 30 mins until 11am. Just enough to stop them sleeping soundly.

The mad party didn't happen again.

Anonymouses, that's basically what the woman on the police line told me. I'm sympathetic that the police have much more serious issues to deal with, but it's sad that no one can take responsibility to deal with this.

You did not say whether the party is a one-off or a regular occurrence at that house? I'm guessing a one-off as you haven't mentioned repeat performances. If so, YABU to call the police.
I know unwanted noise is annoying but can't you live and let live for one night? Your council EH dept will take a noise report during office hours, but if it has only happened the once they won't be able to do anything. It has to be an ongoing issue to reach the threshold for their intervention.

Bloody cutbacks. I've had this as well, with the partygoers needing to leave via an alley that went alongside my house (and under my bedroom). It went on til 5am, but the police did come around 3 to quieten them down, which lasted all of about 15 minutes.

I called the EHO on call (because back then there was one, it was probably about 15 years ago) and they came out - but they didn't get to me until the party had finished, because several other neighbours had called them as well. I was most affected because of the alley; and the EHO said they'd put in a letter to tell the party givers not to do it again, or something. Definite case of noise pollution! But each council has different policies on how they deal with it, I believe.

I'd go with anon's suggestion. I did this years ago when a neighbour had a party - speakers pressed against the adjoining wall from 8am the next day. Random musical snippets for them to enjoy at irregular intervals. Least you know the police won't bother you!

Why should people have to put up with a bloody loud party all night in a residential area, even once? Why does live and let live apply only to those wanting to have parties? Surely the rights of people to actually get to sleep at night are just as important? You can have a party, keep the noise to a dull roar, and turn it off/go inside at a reasonable hour and still have a fun night. You don't need to treat your neighbours like crap.

I sympathise OP, I'm also wondering if you live in the same street as me!
Honestly it starts to wear you down after a while, we live in a residential area and a handful of delightful neighbours have regular raves parties! Is this a regular occurrence?

I would be very surprised if there isn't an OOH number for environmental health as they have statutory duties that they are required to undertake in emergencies. You need to check the website - hopefully the noise has calms down now though. Do report it anyway even if it is a one off

I agree with MidniteScribbler. Fine to have a party, not fine to make so much noise that nobody in the area can sleep. Sleep is precious. Not everybody will be able to lie in on Sunday morning or have a nap later to make up for the broken night.

Our council had 50 complaints from a party near to where I lived. It was horrendously loud and went on from lunchtime until 6 am. I think she was renting and was moved on soon afterwards.

I did this to previous neighbours of mine. I turned it up and walked out the door.

We have one two houses down that has parties when the parents are away - not too many but always loud. It really doesn't bother me because it's not like they're doing it all the time and they're in their late teens having fun. Pissing off the neighbours is a rite of passage IMO.

I have this every Sunday night from the pub at the end our road and it drives me mental!the EA were brilliant as were the licensing committee who had already had several complaints

Look on your council website as there should be an ooh number
