AIBU to go to a hotel tonight as we have no heating

DP is responsible for ensuring we have gas for our large, old and fucking freezing house. It is already 2 degrees out there and dropping.

He tells me this morning that we have run out, completely, and gas is coming tomorrow 'sometime'.

We have a coal fire in two rooms - that's it. No electric heaters.

We have 2 older teen DCs one of whose BF's is coming over for them to cook a valentine meal - on what? The fucking coal fire? There is NO GAS so the cooker doesn't work. I can't even get a cup of fucking tea.

AIBU to want to fuck off to the nearest hotel with the DCs and send him the bill?

Well, if you are a family, then I presume the money is the family's money too.
Seems wildly extravagant to me to pay for a hotel room (rooms?) when you 've presumably got blankets / quilts for the night time, and you've got open fires for the day time / evening, but if you've got money to burn.....

Why does the lack of gas stop your kettle working? Don't you have an electric kettle? Or you can heat water in the microwave or in a pan on the fire, or what about asking a neighbour if you can have a couple of flasks of boiling water?

We just manage with a multifuel stove and no central heating.

A bit unreasonable. When dp and I first got together he could never afford gas. We spent the first two winters we were together without any heating or hot water. I wouldn't recommend but for one night I'm sure you'll manage.
I'd still be fuming with dp though.

Why didn't you go out and beg, buy or borrow a couple of electric heaters? In fact, in your shoes I'd have them ready as spares anyway rather than be so dependent on gas.

Go out for a family meal, come back, build the fires up and either stay in those rooms or open the doors so they heat up the rest of the house.

The Aga will stay warm all night so put pans of water in it now and use it to fill hot water bottles.

Our central heating stopped a few weeks ago and can't afford the plumber, you'll be fine for a day, especially if you have coal fires. (We do not).

Mind you, if you can realistically afford to stay in a hotel for the night - why not?! I'd jump at the chance personally - being cold is no fun!

But if you'll notice the difference financially, then just stick the fire on, it'll be fine.

Mind you, you do need a kettle. Everything is more manageable with a cup of tea!

Op I sometimes feel the same as you! We have no gas and the house can only be heated by a wood burner that eventually heats the radiators.
There have been times we've run out of wood and have absolutely no heat so I feel your pain! I've wanted to cry and leave but have snuggled up with ds in bed and slept!

I've only had central heating for a couple of years so I'd be absolutely fine with the coal fire.

TBH unless you're going to spend loads on a really naice hotel, it's better to stay home.

I would rather stay home with a takeaway, lots of 🍷 (who needs tea?) 😀, and snuggle on the couch under duvets than stay at a Travelodge for example.

Surely you should both keep any eye on the gas level, you are both adults rather than its his or her job.

Seems a bit extreme unless like tendon suggests this is a regular occurrence? I would either just curl up in front of the fire and have a take away, or take us all off to the pub, have dinner and a few drinkies, then come home, layer up and sleep!

I'm surprised people don't have a couple of fan heaters and an electric kettle for emergencies like this. Even modern boilers which are on mains gas can and do break down. I think you are making a bit of mountain out of a molehill.

OP I understand your frustration - can I ask if the rooms with the coal fires have carpets or floorboards down? a makeshift bed would feel rather uncomfortable on floorboards. As PP suggested a takeaway could be ideal but I've been in houses where I am (north of Scotland - old Victorian houses) where only fires were available to heat rooms - I sat with one of the dogs on my lap to keep warm, it was freezing!
