AIBU to ask dd's dad not to message dd and friends in an app they use?

My dd is only 6, she has her own tablet and I have allowed her to download kick to message 2 friends who are children, my female friend, me and her dad.

Hey friend is only 5 and is also on kick. My dd included her dad in a conversation with her and her friends (who are my friends children) dd's dad started messaging everyone involved in the conversation (created by 6year old dd) and he doesn't know my friends dc very well so if I was him I wouldn't message them.

Today he replied to my dd with lots of kisses xxxxxxx and the smiley face that has the heart shaped eyes. I felt it was not appropriate to send everyone in that message (happy for him to send them to my dd but not others).

Anyway I called him and asked him only to message dd and not my friend and her kids but he got all in a mood and started telling me I'm weird for saying that.

Now he is messaging me having a go at me for saying what I said, it's just if my friends ex was sending group messages with lots of kisses and heart shaped eyes I would think it was an inappropriate way to message.

So AIBU?

Personally I think 6 is too young for any kind of messaging app, and from what I've read kik is one od the worst.

Messaging for 5 and 6 year olds is weird, fullstop.

DomesticDisgrace Tue 11-Mar-14 19:59:40

Your DD shouldn't even be on that

positively9something Tue 11-Mar-14 19:59:40

I am considering deleting the app.

What have you read that said kick is one of the worst? I don't know much about it, I think I will start googling it to find out more.

hmmm molly does have a point

I only allow my DC to go on my tablet/phone when it is in 'aeroplane' mode. I do not think they should be messaging anyone at that age.

IneedAwittierNickname Tue 11-Mar-14 20:03:05

Because IIRC anyone can add anyone else, and they do from what I've been told. I dunno, I've only for whatsapp, and you need my number to use that.
Dcs are 9 and 7 and don't have any messaging devices, but can use my phone.

Why would a 6 yr old need an app? She should be playing with her friends, not messaging them.

Bloodyteenagers Tue 11-Mar-14 20:05:02

People really let their children use KIK? Don' people bother to research or anything before they let their children use things? Do you not realise that the app is 17+ for a reason?

Anyway, erm, you don't want a adult to message your child, delete an adult app.

PortofinoRevisited Tue 11-Mar-14 20:05:02

6 yos do not need to message anyone.

Mckayz Tue 11-Mar-14 20:05:50

A messaging app for 5 and 6 year olds? Bizarre

TheBody Tue 11-Mar-14 20:05:55

sorry agree. I am very laid back by some mumsnet standards but a 6 year old doesn't need messaging service and yes her dad should be more mature.

IneedAwittierNickname Tue 11-Mar-14 20:07:10

A quick google tells me that kik is 13+, so definitely not for 6 year olds. It's also listed as one of the 8 worst apps for kids. Apparently there's been problems with sexual predators.

Faverolles Tue 11-Mar-14 20:08:19

Isn't the age rating for kik messenger 17?

CSIJanner Tue 11-Mar-14 20:08:24

Okay - I'll bite.

You seriously allowed your DD6 to use a messaging app which a) you haven't researched, b) quite possibly haven't locked down and c) she's 6!

Faverolles Tue 11-Mar-14 20:08:46

X-posts. Still not suitable though.

If you don't know much about the app OP them you shouldn't be allowing you 6 yo DD to use it, sorry.

I'm genuinely shocked that there are children as young as 5 using kik

bluntasabullet Tue 11-Mar-14 20:09:25

I agree. No 6year old should have kik.

My DSD is 12 and I'm not even sure I feel comfortable with her having it.

ashtrayheart Tue 11-Mar-14 20:10:10

Assuming you mean kik I really don't think that's suitable for a young child confused

purplebaubles Tue 11-Mar-14 20:10:37

biscuit 6??! Come on. What the..

Sallyingforth Tue 11-Mar-14 20:10:57

* I don't know much about it*
^^ That!

It's quite irresponsible to allow such a young child access to internet messaging without fully understanding what it does.

Faverolles Tue 11-Mar-14 20:11:13

Just checked in the App Store, it is a 17.

HyvaPaiva Tue 11-Mar-14 20:12:38

This article - 'Five Mobile Apps That Should Scare the Pants Off Parents' - has Kik top of its list.

It's so irresponsible to let a 6 year old child use it.

Viviennemary Tue 11-Mar-14 20:12:45

I agree that she is just simply too young to be using this app.
