Sorry Mail link

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2531093/I-feel-like-not-body-anymore-Vegetarians-outrage-going-Nandos-served-chicken-mistake.html

She asked for grilled halloumi cheese pitta and was served chicken. Which she ate half and didn't realise as she was talking to her friend.

She tried to make herself sick and had to sent home from work the next day as she was so upset and feels her body is not her own anymore.

How you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between cheese and chicken is a little beyond me. The cheese would be gooey and runny and chicken would have chewy - and they both have completely difference tastes??

It doesn't mention this in the article but the server always comes over and says - "chicken burger with medium sauce" etc so surely they probably said chicken pitta to her too??

But maybe iabu because she has never had meat before for religious reasons.

Halloumi isn't gooey and runny.

justmyview · 30/12/2013 14:54

I think the fact she didn't notice the difference between halloumi and chicken speaks volumes about the fine dining experience at Nandos

stubbornstains · 30/12/2013 14:56

Halloumi's pretty chewy too- it doesn't go runny. If you haven't eaten meat for decades (or forever) you do tend to forget what it's actually like- I think I've accidentally had a few mouthfuls over the years, and not been sure at first.

If it was me, I wouldn't have reacted quite that strongly- mind you, I haven't read the article- is there a tiny bit of Outraged Daily Mail Sadface Syndrome going on there?- but I would have had Strong Words with the restaurant.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 30/12/2013 14:57

Shoot me down, but I think she's over reacting. its only chicken. it won't kill her.
Nandos was wrong, but mistakes happen. its not as if she was served something she is violently allergic to..

Tbh I can kind of understand why she'd be so upset. It's a physoclogical thing I think.

I once ate half a tomato without realising and felt sick for ages after.

Nancy66 · 30/12/2013 14:58

it's a chicken restaurant! I'm sure there must be better choices for a vegetarian

IAmTheOneWhoKnocks · 30/12/2013 14:58

I really want some halloumi now.

musicboxwoundbyakey · 30/12/2013 14:59

Halloumi isn't gooey and runny.

My mistake, I was just going on when I last had it at a restaurant and yeah actually thinking about it probably not gooey -
but definitely nothing like chicken.

YABU
I would be utterly revolted if that happened to me.

RandyRudolf · 30/12/2013 15:00

Haven't read the article but would agree with the comment upthread

Halloumi is chewy and I suppose if you're having a few drinks too you wouldn't notice initially. The quality of chicken served at some places certainly wouldn't help.

firesidechat · 30/12/2013 15:00

Agree with others about the halloumi. It makes an excellent meat substitute because it is very "meaty". You can't blame the vegetarian.

Procrastinating · 30/12/2013 15:02

Never been to Nandos but I expect whatever is in the pitta it would be covered in sauces etc.

MrsLettuce · 30/12/2013 15:02

YABVVU she's Hindu, FFS!

KenAdams · 30/12/2013 15:02

I've had both those things at Nandos and they taste completely different. She are most of it too so she's seriously overreacting. If I'm out, I always check my food before I eat it, just in case it's what I don't eat. That's up to me to check though, I wouldn't just trust them to get it right.

Unfortunately not, just one photo of her looking natural - not smiling or sad face.

And just pictures of Nandos and pittas.

Onesleeptillwembley · 30/12/2013 15:03

Anybody that goes to Nandos deserves all they get.
And yes, total overreaction going home from work the next day.

The lady in the story looks as if she may never recover...

As if she has lost the will to live.

over chicken

It's more of a hands clenched photograph, but close!

I think she is over reacting a little, although in saying that I think the management should have offered her a full refund, rather than vouchers, as understandably she may be put off going there again.

BuffyxSummers · 30/12/2013 15:03

I think she is being a bit precious about it. The main issue seemed to be that she can't say the thing about not eating meat for 28 years. She probably trotted that out a lot and now she can't.

RandyRudolf · 30/12/2013 15:03

I also expect the level of her reaction would depend on why she chooses not to eat chicken in the first place.

SilverApples · 30/12/2013 15:03

Have you ever eaten grilled halloumi, OP?
I'm veggie, have been for almost 40 years, I can't remember what meat actually tastes and feels like. Yes. I'd be pissed off at being given a chicken pitta instead of a halloumi one, and probably would have struggled to tell the difference.
I know that eating chicken won't kill me, but I'm vegetarian on ethical grounds. Dead chicken, dead human, all the same in my book.
Don't get stuck in a lifeboat with me.

ohtanmybum · 30/12/2013 15:04

That's the DM for you - inconsequential guff as news is it's standard garbage fare. Seriously, who cares?

musicboxwoundbyakey · 30/12/2013 15:04

YABVVU she's Hindu, FFS!

I'm not saying she's being unreasonable to be upset as it's a horrible thing to happen.

But overreacting by being sent home from work the next day and contacting the media is in my opinion a bit extreme.

CosyTeaBags · 30/12/2013 15:04

I've been veggie most of my life. Sometimes mistakes like this happen - the worst regular offender for me is veggie spring rolls from the chinese takeaway, they quite often have meat of some sort hidden in them. Sometimes I have to ask a friend to check, and often they can't tell whether it's meat either!

I do understand how it's possible not to know, I've almost forgotten what meat tastes like, and if she's never had it then I can understand that she missed it on the first few bites. Not sure how she'd get through more than half of it though, but there you go.

I too would feel sick, I'd let the restaurant know about the mistake.. but that would be it. To be sent home from work the next day is a tad... excessive.

And yes, there's a slightly folded arms outraged picture.
