AIBU?

To refuse to use my parents' made-up name for their house...

OK, so they used to live in a house which didn't have a number and had a name. My kids would get excited about going to blah blah cottage., Now they have moved somewhere where the house does have a number. But they miss having a name for their house, so they've given it a name. I just feel naff using the name. I mean, the house already has a number! And it's not like a massive road, there are only 6 houses in it, and it's a 'court' so it sounds quite nice anyway.

AIBU and should I just swallow my pride and call the house by it's new 'name'? Or should I just say we're going to visit blah blah court and address post to no.6 blah blah court?

Just say "we're going to nanny and grandads house"

ElizabethPonsonby · 13/12/2011 17:47

Dunroamin' ?

LemonDifficult · 13/12/2011 17:47

Tough one. On balance YANBU. Super twee to make up a name for your house but if that's what they want there's no real harm in it. Cringey, though.

Bloodymary · 13/12/2011 17:49

Use both.
I used to live in a 'blah blah cottage' that also had a number.
Everybody used both because the cottage had a plaque with name and number on it. So it made sense.

randommoment · 13/12/2011 17:49

Made up a silly answer at first, but actually - their house, their rules. Although it'll cost them £150 to get the post office to officially change the address!

LaurieFairyCake · 13/12/2011 17:49

I'm considering giving my house a made up name before I come to sell. It definitely improved the price.

Though I don't think "shit-hole" will do it Grin

Pandemoniaa · 13/12/2011 17:52

Chateau d'Espaire?
Villa Costalotti?

KD0706 · 13/12/2011 17:53

My dad made up a name for his house. I think it's totally random, must google at some point. I don't use it on post, just the number.

I think in my dads case he is trying to be a snob bless him.

perplexedpirate · 13/12/2011 17:55

Don't use name and number on addresses! It's beyond naff.
I think I'd just stick with the number tbh.

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 13/12/2011 17:56

I know of two very ordinary bungalows locally, one a Fresh Wyndes and one an Island Pynes. Is it either of those?

ConstanceNoring · 13/12/2011 17:57

Yes it's twee, but they are your parents, are you really going to 'refuse' to refer to the house as they wish?

Don't be an arse about it, how hard is it to just humour them, ffs?

mummymccar · 13/12/2011 17:58

My dad did this a few years ago too but put paid to the idea when the postman told him that it sounded stupid! Xmas Grin

MerryMarigold · 13/12/2011 18:00

OK, I will swallow my pride and call it that...but it is called "Providence Barn" (ok, I don't think they know anyone on here!).

AI still BU in light of the name?

MonaLotte · 13/12/2011 18:06

Does the building look like a barn?

TakenForAMug · 13/12/2011 18:07

Is it an actual barn or barn-like structure?

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 13/12/2011 18:10

Are they Amish?

LemonDifficult · 13/12/2011 18:11

At least it avoids 'Rose' 'Cherry' Cottage' 'Orchard' or similar bucolic grimness. Is it a barn, though?

candytuft63 · 13/12/2011 18:13

Daryll and Anne round the corner named their new bungalow... Daryanne.
Their parents moved next door . They are called Mark and Jennifer. Youve guessed it -the proud new owners of Marjen !
so it could be worse ! Grin

I wouldn't bother writing it on post - it won't help the postman and what's the point?

And when you're talking about going to someone's house - would you use the name? Don't you just say "we're going to X's house"?

I can't think of any other occasions when you'd need to use the name, really.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 13/12/2011 18:15

I know someone whose house is called Shalimar.

SantaAteAllTheBiscuits · 13/12/2011 18:16

sorry, nothing constructive to add really.

My great aunt used to address post to my grandmother to 'Lake View Cottage'.

My grandmother's house was a tiny old 4 room cottage in the west of ireland which had a fairly distant glimpse of a lake out the front.... used to cause hysterics when letters arrived with 'Lake View Cottage' written on them Xmas Grin

The house my parents bought a few years ago has a tiny snatch of a view of the same lake if you go up to the guest bedroom and stand on a chair.... I tried to convince them to call it Lake View in honour of my grandmother's house but they declined Xmas Grin
