If you are too, please vote for 38 Degrees to take it on as a campaign.

YABU
News in Briefs is wonderful.

Women have got bigger battles to fight out there for equality that have got eff all to do with tits in a daily newspaper.

squeakytoy · 16/02/2011 11:48

Simple solution.. dont buy the paper.

There are plenty of naked women in perfume adverts, and jewellery ads in the high end womens monthly mags..

And dont be such a fecking newspaper snob...

It turns my stomach: if I am sitting next to someone on the bus who is reading The Sun, I feel really intimidated and uncomfortable.

Are you expecting them to turn to you and say "lets see yours then?" lol..

JessinAvalon · 16/02/2011 11:49

We are fighting the bigger battles too. It doesn't have to be one or the other especially when one is a daily reminder of women's place in the world still (ie sat down in sexy pose with tits out)...

Its not an insignificant battle - I find page 3 demeaning

Women have fought and died for their rights. That includes the right to make a living out of showing their bodies off if they so choose to.

I'm not intimidated by pictures of topless men or women.

I don't however think the sun should call themselves a family newspaper. Grown ups should have nothing to fear from it though.

its quite cringey when I see a man reading it, I don't feel intimidated, tho not too sure how someone would feel that way, but each to their own.

I thinks its a waste of page that could have articles one.

Chil1234 · 16/02/2011 12:03

YANBU... largely because it's a tired old-fashioned format, very 1980s, and the Sun should probably have left it behind years ago. I don't buy that newspaper but don't personally find the idea of a topless model demeaning. It doesn't make me feel intimidated either. I do worry about how young girls compare themselves with the glamour/fashion/celebrity industry but I think there are far worse examples than the Sun.

fannyfoghorn · 16/02/2011 12:08

Tits do not belong in a NEWSpaper. I will sign the petition. I am also Confused at 'ladies' pages' in certain newspapers eg Femail.

Lucy85 · 16/02/2011 12:09

I hate it. I don't need to see other people's surgically enhanced bodies anywhere. So, I don't buy it, I don't read it and neither does anyone else I know. I found it horrifying that that newspaper was given some 'creidt' for influencing the election.

hey ho, each to their own.

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 16/02/2011 12:11

Absolutely agree Kerrieanne
A woman's right to be anything they want includes being a topless model.

No woman has the right to take that choice away from another woman because it makes them feel uncomfortable.

Do those women who want Page 3 banned also want the Armani/Dolce & Gabanna/Versace campaigns with David Gandy and the like taken down? Is David Beckham in a pair of boxers alright or not?

The real problems come with women who are sexually exploited, and those on Page 3 certainly don't fall into that category. If you want a good example, look up Keeley Hazell.

I wouldn't read the Sun because I think it's shit - I'm another Guardian reader. But if someone wants to read it then it doesn't bother me one iota; I'm not going to sneer at them.

Theonlyexception · 16/02/2011 12:13

I doubt that many grown men who aren't virgins would get a stiffy from looking at page three! But I still don't like it. Dh likes the Sun because he says it has the best football pages Hmm but I've told him not to bring it home because I don't want our little boy to think that this is regular newspaper content. My mil, however, has no problem bringing it into my home and leaving it lying around for ds to see Angry
It makes me laugh when people who read it think it is a real newspaper!

Katiepoes · 16/02/2011 12:13

YANBU. There's a thread on here about boys making sexual comments to young girls - how can we possibly teach young men that this is unacceptable when national papers treat women like this? Or teach girls that they are more than a set of boobs/legs/bum?

I once worked in a printers - one of the machines was covered in Page 3 pics, I hated going down there. Some of them didn't even have heads, just the boobs.

JessinAvalon · 16/02/2011 12:25

I go to Australia to see family often and every Aussie I've ever spoken to about page 3 is amazed that we have a topless woman/girl in her teens in a newspaper every day. Rupert Murdoch didn't try to get away with it in his own country but he did over here.

I wonder if the Aussies would like him back?

Oh always get really riled at the so called 'ladies pages' in the papers. What century are we in that we should only read about pretty clothes and baking. Ludicrous.
Page 3 should be banned - why does the NEWS have to feature a pair of tits for the 'men' to look at before they proceed with their wank reading.

JessinAvalon · 16/02/2011 13:13

I was pretty mad last year when I read about the election. Pages 1 & 2 of The Times about the male PM candidates. Page 3 about the leaders' wives' outfits. Is this really what a so-called quality newspaper thinks is important to women?

I suppose it is owned by Murdoch as well though.

Voted 3 times yesterday and it let me vote again 3 more times today. Not sure if it'll count though. I thought 3 votes was the maximum.

jellybeans · 16/02/2011 14:21

I find page 3 demeaning as well YANBU. It makes me sad that i have always been made to feel that the way i look is the most important thing as well as looking young. It's made me, and most other women, very self conscious. It's shocking that we still have it in society. Some people are fooling themselves if they think it is OK.

It's an anachronism. If it didn't exist and someone tried to introduce it today, it would be met with shock and disapproval and groups would pressure retailers not to stock it.

It's not that the pictures are topless - there are lots of magazines sold in supermarkets and newsagents that have topless pictures in them - it's that it's considered normal in a 'newspaper' that's ok to read at the breakfast table.

It's widely considered acceptable and 'harmless' though. And any group of women that try to call for it's removal are labelled as uptight and frigid.

I occasionally read the Sun if I am in a cafe or somesuch and want a bit of light entertainment, and although I don't really find the page 3 pics demeaning it does annoy me that the paper seems to be implying that their rag is for men only, which is a bit sexist.

Maybe in the name of equality they should have some studly man with his cock out every other day.
