Yes I assumed it’s to do with Braverman calling for the Armistice Day free Palestine march to be called off.

The General Secretary of UCU, Jo Grady, is having to spin frantically because her poorly executed industrial action has lost members huge amounts of salary for nothing and destroyed the cohesion and credibility of the union. Lots of people re calling for her to resign. Hence, her new front of mindless activism is “freedom of speech”, something she has previously demonstrated her commitment to by using Terfblocker and calling for the University of York to sack a precariously-employed member of staff who didn’t believe that other lesbians could have a penis. She and LOJ are of the same calibre when it comes to hypocrisy.

And, yes, it’s to do with Palestine-Israel. My sympathies are generally pro-Palestinian, but I would not want to be a Jewish member of staff in academia at the moment because it’s full of people who are disgustingly and openly anti-Semitic. All those people who wanted TERFs sacked do a dizzying 180 when it comes to “freedom of speech” on this issue.

Also, what is he on about, why is he talking about American politics and history (First Red Scare, McCarthyism)?? The last time I checked UCU was a trade union for U.K. academics.

And the ‘relatively voiceless’ minorities - I’d say he is correct if he is talking about people with disabilities but if he means TQ people, given their small numbers, they are surely not voiceless! He is really incoherent. How the mighty have fallen.

The other person who has bravely taken a stance in support free speech in relation to Israel/Palestine is Professor Priyamvada Gopal.

However, as Professor Alice Sullivan points out, not so long Professor Gopal signed an open letter to the board of Advance HE denouncing them for allowing Sullivan to speak for 15 minutes at a 1-day conference in Birmingham.

Thinking about it though the Armistice Day march hasn’t even been called off so there must be more to it than that. Has someone been sacked or hounded off campus or arrested for calling for a ceasefire? Or if it’s not about Palestine / Israel has something else prompted this.
