Recommendations for protein shakes please.

Hi all,

I need some recommendations for protein shakes as a post work out meal. I do high intense strength training 2-3 times a week and I sometimes struggle to have a protein rich meal after my workout... Especially if I go to the gym first thing in the morning and later I'm running to get to work on time....

I have never been a big fan of protein shakes but now I need them as a protein shake would be any day better than no post workout meal....

Also..need something that isn't loaded with sugar...

TIA :)

Why?

Why not wait till you are home and have a proper meal?

If you delay eating after exercising your body will keep burning the calories.

If you are not hungry, why eat?

I've just started using them as part of a low carb diet. I've only tried a few, but the one I like best is the Solgar one. I got it in a health food shop & the reason I picked that one is that the packaging didn't look like it was aimed at male body builders. I'm not too sure about the sugar content, but it tastes OK.

I've found that it's very filling & will easily replace a meal, but I only have one twice a week or so when I'm short of time. I make mine with soya milk because it's low carb, but you can use ordinary milk or water.

TalkingPeace because it is important to have a high protein meal after a weight training session... And once I get home, I have about 45 mins to get ready, get DS ready and then drop him off at childcare... Ideally, I would have had 2 eggs if I had the time... :)

Drama thanks for the suggestion... Will look it up.... :)

I use Progenex Build Vanilla. Expensive but tastes pretty good and definitely improves recovery. I have found it a lot easier to maintain muscle using it after every heavy workout ( 2 scoops after lifting , 1 after every run over 10 miles). I just shake it up with water.

Talkinpeace anyone who weight trains will have to have a protein and small high GI hit straight after working out as this is the optimal window for feeding muscles that have worked so hard during the workout. It's sports science 101 and any trainer will tell you the same. A whey protein shake with banana straight after a workout then a meal 1 - 2 hrs later is perfect. OP there is a good simple whey thatmHolland and Barrett do which always seems to be on a good 2 for 1 offer. Would also recommend BCAA's to hold on to yr lean tissue.

Thanks for the recommendations... Will check them out. I need to go down to Holland and Barrets ... Smile

I quite like the PhD diet whey (the belgian choccy one is actually pretty delicious)

lots of "trainers" and "nutritionists" are way off the mark on their science so I'd like to see peer reviewed evidence for the 101

??
Just want evidence - is that such a scary question?

I don't think the OP is asking for a debate on whether the protein is needed or not, just for a recommendation as she is choosing to follow advice that is often given by personal trainers and gyms

DD and her BF are both working with a personal trainer who has recommended PhD Pharmawhey

I quite like the PhD diet as well, although DH finds it a bit gritty because of the green tea extract. Not the chocolate peanut butter flavour though, which is VILE. I have a massive tub I'm trying to brave my way through as I can't bear to throw it.

But my point is that the excess protein supplements are now being associated with nasty medical side effects.
I do not understand - medically / scientifically - why they would be needed
so wanted evidence to prove the 101 point

just because people are selling it and have a PhD in something vaguely related, does not make it a sensible thing to do

Talkinpeace the aide effects of a diet rich in protein are not definitive. The science behind a post workout meal is being revisited and disputed too. I have protein shakes and love them, I eat a high protein diet and love it. The traditional food pyramid which is carbalicious is also now in dispute and its thought they cause problems too.

All 'facts' when it comes to nutrition quickly change. The OP isn't asking for your opinion on shakes, she is asking for recommendation on shakes. She has made the decision for herself.

Op I have tried loads of brands over the years. I don't like any of them made in a shaker, tbh. Very watery.

I usually wait til I get home and do it with a hand blender. But my fave brands are phd, usn, trutein and Scitec. I find they are all pretty similar in macros, but you will need to check the sugar content.

Physiologically you are just as well off with a pint of milk, rather than a protein shake. DP researches exercise physiology and does high intensity training, and just drinks milk after.

OP - you might have been better off posting in Exercise/Weights Room Smile.

Personally I like Optimum Nutrition but if you want the 'healthiest' option check out vegan powders - Vital is made from pea protein, Nature's Garden also do a range (IME they don't taste as nice but avoids any issues with whey/casein such as digestive problems and a lot less weird additives ).

If you want something lower in calories than protein drinks designed for body builders, The Good Whey (a family-run company based in Cambridge) make a powder which is very tasty and pretty low-cal. They also do a ready-made protein drink in a bottle called Upbeat that's available in most supermarkets.

My post workout breakfast is half a frozen banana, a large handful or two of frozen berries, 2 raw eggs, and a big glug of coconut milk blended into somewhere between ice cream and a smoothie. Plenty of protein in there, quick to make, keeps me full.

The protein works and my protein are the two I use. If you have facebook check their pages for offers before you order
TPW best flavour is millionaire shortbread especially mixed with dark chocolate almond milk

I don't like Protein shakes or protein supplements. Eating balanced healthy protein diet (eggs, meat, milk, fish) is much better in this regard.

Talkinpeace I can't be bothered to find them for you, sorry! - but if you want to look you'll find hundreds if not more - go to the peer reviewed sports science journals directly info you don't care for trainers articles.

It's weird you would have a problem with this particular fact, as the evidence is absolutely extensive.
