looks potentially nasty for Scotland and parts of northern England, severe gales expected.

ok, well looking at things this low is a different beast from Mondays. It is a low pressure travelling from west to east over the north of Scotland, bringing the strongest winds over the top end of england and all of scotland. In particular northern England looks to see severe gales over thursday night. (where are the early advisories for it?)

very wet thursday in the se, so misery for many.

I'm surprised there aren't any weather warnings out for Thursday, it looks like it's going to be pretty bad.
DH looking at the 1.30pm weather forecast saw the low pressure/wind/rain coming our way and said, "Holy cr@p, I'm moving to another country" but then decided instead that Thursday was going to be a "duvet day" and that I would have to go out and do everything!

Been keeping an eye on it too, with my very inexperienced eye Grin

On Met Monkey, they're saying it'll 'hit' in 2 waves the 1st being very windy, but the 2nd lot will be the worst of it.

Will be interesting to watch , although I'm not sure I'm looking forward to being out in it.

On the school run I have to walk past a park that sweeps off of the local downs. When the wind blows in that direction(which it will on Thur) it can very nearly blow you off your feet .

Being keeping a eye on Met Office today, expecting warnings for it, but I'm socked there's non so far.

Enjoy the nice calm Autumn day tomorrow, it'll be the calm before the storm literally Grin

Thanks for the heads-up, I was going to rake up my leaves tomorrow if it's dry, but it sounds like i'll be wasting my time [procrastinate emoticon] Wink.

I'll be keeping an eye on the air pressure too and let you know what it falls to.

excellent procrastination YCII!

catinthehat - :)

have to say - wind wise I think that for northern England around Cumbria through to the Pennines it looks particularly stormy. Much more so than Monday's low. Blowy through England but not to the same extent. Northern Scotland, not so much really until the back end of the low pressure.

Really surprised there's still nothing from the metoffice. Metmonkey and netweather have all got weather warnings/alerts.

with the worst of the winds looking like they will be over northern Britain tomorrow evening I am astonished that there are no early advisories.
I suspect there will be a lot of ferry disruption to the IOM and NI tomorrow evening!

LOL at being on strike ~ perhaps the weather's not exciting enough for them at the moment!

Metmonkey are really emphasising on their update how different this storm will be to the one on Monday ~ very much saying that this one will be worse when it comes to windspeeds.

good luck Porto - you won't be seeing the worst of it but I don't think it will be smooth sailing.

I agree with metmonkey Petunia, particularly in the NW. Much more chance of disruption from this storm.

Yuck.

I started a new job in school as a lunchtime assisitant on Monday, they have been indoors last few days so were like caged animals.

I was hoping for a decent run of dry weather to get us used to each other!

It still looks fierce tomorrow night in Northern England. Take care.
Also, on the weather forums there seems to be some interest in potential convective activity in southern England. As always, any significant damage or observations please report back!!!

On Met Monkey they are saying the jet streak (tbh have no idea what that is- but sounds bad ) will stretch over Central England and East Anglia, so these areas will have period of very strong winds and gusts in the order of 60mph or more. They are expecting Carmen to bring some severe disruption to Northern parts especially, but also locally to some central areas.

Starting to get slightly concerned as well as excited, as I'm in that area.

OYBBK will it be as bad as 1987 do you think? A few of the Weather groups are saying it's quite a serious storm, but with their technical jargon I'm having trouble understanding it all ,lol.

Already to Dp there is no way he's cycling to and fromwork tomorrow, I'm making him walk (30 min walk)

moonmother - I don't think that overall it will be as bad as '87. It is a nasty storm and there is potential for a lot of disruption. I'm scared to say it though in
case I'm doing a 'Michael Fish'
I would expect damage if you are in the core of the strongest winds.

UKMO now have the low at 946. Much deeper than Monday's event.

A jet streak is essentially a high speed bit of the jet stream. Its not really an area I've fully got to grips with but I know that they can deepen troughs and then the resulting front/trough produces more intense weather. I think that is where the convection aspect is coming from.

I am rather Envy that I'm not in the main winds but even down south we may see some exciting weather. I'll be outdoors for much of tomorrow so you'll all have to hold the fort til I'm back (if I make it back Grin
