..and how do you use when bottle feeding

LO 4 1/2 months old and i think it is time...but clueless re how to do the baby rice thing

he is always crying too early after a feed and i think he needs "MORE"

but due to poor head control i feel solids/purees would be too much since he isn't upright enough

and also hungry baby milk seems cruel to me - to give something that uis hard to digest

he has enough digestive porbvlems as it is

help

so to a 240 ml bottle how do i prepare baby rice???

No, only proper liquids go through a teat.

And it is best to wait until 6 months.

To be honest baby rice is not that calorific so if he is hungry the best thing to do is to up the amount you give him at a feed or to feed him more often. How often does he have bottles? Do you feed on demand? Around this age is a classic growth spurt time so if you can try to give him more milk for a couple of weeks and then re-evaluate. Ideally you should wait until 6 months to wean but some children are ready earlier. However the facts that he has poor head control and doesn't sit up well indicate that he is not ready.

Baby rice in a bottle is an outdated practice and not a good idea at all.

Oh and baby rice tastes bloody disgusting! It can also cause constipation so if he has digestive problems you really should wait til 6 months to wean and then just go straight to fruit and veg.

bumbly, please , please do not do this

it can cause choking, it can cause kidney problems, it is really not a good idea

if your baby is hungry, then feed more and use hungry baby milk if necessary

baby rice is not that calorific and if you think hungry baby milk is harder to digest, why do you think rice would be any easier?

esp with digestive problems, you should aim to hold off weaning until 26 weeks.

how long is he going between feeds? and wht do you think he is crying to early?

if he is hungry, milk, milk and more milk is all he needs, especially with digestive issues

What on earth! Baby too young. Don't feed baby rice in a bottle.

Camillathechicken · 03/12/2007 19:39

when the time is right to introduce solids, they should be introduced as a food, not a drink..

baby rice is a food.

using rusks or rice to bulk up bottles is outdated and unnecessary

ONLY MILK THRU A TEAT

Caps intended!!

Bottles and their teats are meant to allow liquids thru. All rice will do is thicken the milk which will mean it gets stuck in teh teat and can cause choking if it all spurts out at once.

At 4.5 months there is usually agrowth spurt in as far as i remember. If your LO is not able to hold his/her head up then they are DEFINATLY NOT ready to be weaned regardless of age(even though he is actually far too young)

do not fee the baby anything but milk from a bottle.if you are concerned that your baby is hungry then speak to your health visitor, they will probably advise you to use a milk for hungrier babies

just give him more milk. who says he is crying 'too early'. your baby hasn't read any boxes or cartons or books that tells him how often he is supposed to be hungry.

This poor woman,

Why do you always preach the fear of WHO into someone not asking for it, instead of OVER REACTING, don't you think you could educate her in a more civil manner?

Defo don't give baby rice in a bottle (as I'm sure you have gathered).

Re: weaning. I weaned at 15.5 weeks due to reflux problem and having a baby that didn't like milk. However, I agree that if you LO does't have enough head control that you feel comfortable feeding him with a spoon then you shoul definately try hungry baby milk.

Camillathechicken · 03/12/2007 19:46

people are reacting strongly, because:

it is too early to wean

baby has not got head control

not sitting up

and has digestive problems, which could be excacerabted by early weaning

it is an outdated and potentially dangerous practice

i said please in my post, so i think i was perfectly civil

No you don't feed cereals through a teat. That still occurs in parts of Europe but is not recommended in UK due to choking risks and the temptation to feed babies solids before they are really ready. tbh given his feeding history I would not seek to wean him so soon as it is more likely to upset his digestion than less. You might be better finding a formula that really suits him first, before introducing anything else. Milk is higher in calories than any solids , fluid oz per oz , and the longer you wait the easier it will be to offer a wider variety of real food(puree veg or even as chunks) which you can keep track of if it does cause a digestive problem, not just fortified starch off a spoon.

If you decide to go ahead now , confirm your gp is happy that you should do so as it is early and he has had feeding issues, try with a shallow spoonful of very sloppy fluidy baby rice but if he just pushes it out with his tongue, that is a sign that he is not yet ready for solids as he has not lost his tongue thrust/gag reflex.

Spacepuppy, where did i preach WHO guidelines?

I don't even know what they are to be truthful. I don't think i was rude either.

Yes, by starting a post with "you DO NOT UNER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES put baby rice in a bottle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

in my eye sounds a bit like "You stupid woman, what are you thinking? do you always ask stupid questions?"

Instead, educate her like you would a total stranger!

I've been on MN long enough to know that the WHO guidelines its the only bible read regarding weaning on this site.

or it sounds like a mother who is concerned that another mother mgith be doing something potentially not very good and wants to make sure she sees the importance of it?

not a single person has mentioned WHO

i think the guidelines to say that head control, being able to sit , loss of tongue thrust etc are part of readiness.. and early weaning not a great idea with digestive problems

There are some messages that have to be direct. A potential choking hazard is one of them. I would want people to warn me in the same way if I was about to do something similar.
