Dressy flat shoes

Hi, I'm a towering stiletto heel kind of girl. But I have recently broken my back. I'm going out for dinner with my husband to a fancy pants restaurant in a couple and would have been wearing a lovely little black dress with some gorgeous heels. Clearly now the heels are out of the question. So how do I make myself look and feel glam in flats? Friend suggested sparkly flat shoes and hubby suggests some pretty flat boots. I'm not sure how they will look? I'm I my 30's, 5'10 and a size 8-10 ..... Any styles you think might work?

I'm with your friend - shoes, not boots. Metallics, embellished and interesting textures all work. And actually so does just a really elegant shape in a plain shoe - point toe at the moment I think.

If you need a thicker sole - which I do, you may not

Silver can work.

These depend what you'll have on your legs - just another idea.

This particular example is budget busting, but similar will work well.

I love most of those, I think it's a mindset thing, I love them but would wear them with jeans for a nice lunch with the family. Dinner out with the hubby is always a short skirt stiletto kind of affair so I can't picture wearing those with a short dress...

Maybe I need to be thinking of wearing a jeans and dressy top this time round

I agree it's hard to get used to. I was actually quite upset when I realised I was forced into a permanent change. I got used to it though, and I have a completely new shoe wardrobe.

Also, you're tall and slim - with good legs? - and I think flats with short skirts can be very chic.

But yes, maybe ease yourself in.

I'm a flat shoe wearer and the En Brogue website is really fab. I also love all of Nora's suggestions

I'm not a maxi dress fan so I would recommend sticking to your original plan of short dress. Hope you're OK by the way - a broken back sounds truly hideous x

Boden are good for nice flats - they've got an extra 10% off the clearance section this weekend, so worth having a look if you don't want to spend a lot if you aren't going ot be wearing them after your leg is better. (you can run it via Quidco and get 8% back as well to make them even more bargainous).

Thanks lotta....I'm fine, luckily it's a stable break, but yeah broken back is pretty grim! Concentrate when walking down the stairs is my advice to one and all !

Sam Edleman sometimes have lovely dressy flats but it can be a bit hit and miss depending on the collection.

Depending on your style an elegant trouser suit with boots might work (provided trousers long enough to conceal boot top).

Probably not pushing the style stakes but it's just heels have always been my style. I'm very much hoping this is a temporary thing....

I have recently overhauled my look after considerable weight loss so don't really want to update my look, just find a way to accept the flats for now and not look frumpy when I go for dinner with dh.

Sam Edelman Adena flats are dressy and a bit different. This what they look like - out of stock on asos but for the photo - they come in various colours so if you like them you may be able to find them elsewhere. The spiky look may not be for everyone though!

Charlotte Olympia also do some interesting dressy flats but again you have to hunt around. Currently net a porter only has the cat ones which I really hate.

I would love that, but jumpsuits don't seem to work for me, short body, long legs, so the proportions always seem to be out ?

But I do think they might look nice with a simple black dress

I can only wear flats (and they have to be completely flat flats) due to a hip problem. I have to dress from my feet up, so I have to already have the shoes to suit before I buy an outfit. It's a whole different way of thinking!

I currently live in Butterfly Twists, as I find them really comfy and they stay perfectly on my wonky (and differently sized) feet. They do a range of styles from office to going out, although the basic ballet pump style is the same across the whole range.
