Met a mum at a toddler group today who was telling me her dd got up at 8.30 this morning. Ds got up at 5.08 (grr) as is quite common with him. I said "oh well, I suppose I shouldn't complain as he was asleep before 7".. She reckons her dd is always asleep then too!!! Please please tell me most babies are more like my ds before I despair even more at the horrible early mornings.

Yours is way more normal than hers. B
ut some kids do just sleep. One of my friends has a lo like that - he's ALWAYS slept 13 hours plus a night - from about 3 mths to now (nearly 4)
Mine came froma different box

My advice in this situations is look sorry for the person
'poor you, you must feel you've missed the whole morning by the time she gets up' That foxes 'em.

when mine was 2 he generally went to bed at 8.30 and got up somewhere between 5.30 and 6.30 (heading towards 6.30 as age 3 approached), with an hour to an hour and a half's nap in the afternoon, up until about 2.10.

He was never much of a sleeper as a baby though.

most toddlers do not sleep this much at night. Mine averaged about 10 hours (8pm to 6am) at that age, and did not have an afternoon nap

My dd (aged 2.9) sleeps 12-13 hours a night.

But she has only been like this for about 6 months or so.
She used to wake alot during the night but she has NEVER woken at 5 and assumed that the day had started..if she ever oke up early she would get a drink, her storytape put on and told firmly that it was still bedtime.

My DS used to get up at between 5 and 6 but all of a sudden has started sleeping until 8.30-9.30 (he's almost 3) so maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel!!!

dd2 was probably sleeping 12-14 hours per night then, dd3 has never slept 12 hours at night, 11 hours is long for her!

I often say that clever kids sleep less (usually if someone is moaning about lack of sleep). My Mum used to swear this was true and some very clever people have needed little sleep historically. Is a great retort if someone is showing off about what a great sleeper they've got.DS was just like yours at the same age. DD 16m sleeps for 12-13 hours at night tis way the cookie crumbles

Sorry, mine sleeps 7-7.30 usually, more if she's going through a developmental spurt. Has done since about 7months old.
I think it's rare though, and am aware am lucky.
We have the odd blip, mostly when unsettled by something. Think it's genetic lazy gene.

No, it's normal. Ds2 will on occasion sleep 7pm 'til 8am.

Ds1 used to sleep 15 hours, sometimes.

It's pretty normql if they have little or no nap.

Report
Weegle · 07/02/2008 13:36

my toddler certainly doesn't - usual is bed at 7.30pm but often doesn't drop off till 8/8.30 and will wake anywhere between 5 and 7am. At 5am I insist it's still night and will play a game I invariably lose whereby I refuse to let him get up but he refuses to let me go back to bed , if it's closer to 7am you can bet it's because I was up for about an hour with him in the night for water/teeth/general nuisance. I positively try to avoid discussing his sleep with mums who I know have angels who sleep 12-13 hours solid and consistently so, it would make me very jealous and wouldn't serve any purpose other than to annoy me! HTH!

I think it's normal isn't it?

Ds3 is 3 and he sleeps for about 12 hours. No daytime naps.

My DD sleeps from 7pm - 8 / 8.30am if I let her. She has one nap of about 40 minutes a day.

She's like her dad though, crap at getting up in the morning

Dd has always slept for 12 hours a night (since about a year), plus 2 hours nap every day. She stopped napping at 2 and a half, and now, at 3 and a half, will often sleep for 13 hours a night.

If dd wakes up at anything before 7am, we have always told her it's still night time. So far, she's always gone back to bed and gone to sleep, or played quietly in her room.

Sorry

My dd (2 tomorrow) has no daytime nap, and sleeps 11 hours at night on a good day, 10 on a bad day.

She has one friend who sleeps a looooong time though.

Hmmm, ds1 sleeps for 12 hours, generally (though he is going through a phase of waking at 2.30am and screaming his head off at the moment ). Dd1 used to sleep for 15 hours straight . For this reason I avoid telling people about this as they would either feel I was rubbing their face in it or taking the piss! I have a friend whose 2.5 year old dd wakes regularly at 4am or 5am every day, poor soul, and anecdotally (from what I hear at playgroups) she is not particularly unusual. I do sympathise even if I can't empathise, early morning starts are so hard!

DS (2.5) goes to bed at 7pm and usually wakes between 6.30-7.30am. He has a nap in the day about 3 times a week.

He has been sleeping for that long at night since he was 4 MO. Looking around at the people I know with toddlers, some just seem to sleep more than others. Not sure if it's need, or that they like being in bed, or maybe genetic, I have always loved my sleep and seem to need more than average.

Sorry DS is 22mths and goes to bed around 7.00pm and wakes up naturally between 7.30 - 9.30am. He doesn't like getting up earlier than 7.30am as when I have to wake him early for any reason he grumbles like a teenager. Plus he has an hour in the afternoon.

I think its partly genetic, partly down to environment. When we were away sharing with friends and they said DS woke up about 7.30am shouted for a minute then went back to sleep as we weren't up we didn't hear him, so being in a slightly lazy household may increase sleeping propensity. Oh and he is a whirling dirvish when awake so I think he burns up so much energy that he loves his bed.

My son (2.11 yrs) sleeps 12-13 hours a night BUT I am getting what I deserve after 2 and a half years of him not sleeping through the night, at least that's the way I see it.
He pushed me to my absolute limits and when he saw he was about to give me a nervous breakdown, he started sleeping. Luckily. Think I would be responding to this thread from a secure unit if he hadn't.

Ds has always slept pretty badly. He didn't sleep through the night (7pm til 5amish) until he was a year old.

After that he started gradually to have more nights where he did this. From 18monthsd old - 2.5 years old he pretty much slept 10 (7pm-5am) hrs a night with a nap of 1-2 hrs a day. However his 10 hrs a night were often broken with a brief wake-up or two.

Since he turned 3 in Novemebr, he has had the odd time where he has slept until 7.30pm or later but this is generaly if he has been awake in the night for a bit. the lie ins are getting more frequent though so I have hope that the 5am starts will soon be a thing of the past. Mind you he woke up at 4.45am this morning and didn't go back to sleep.
