Find your hosts file (at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts for Windows XP) 2. Mine has a very long list with lots of known adservers in it so that I block most ads anywhere but I believe the specific line you need to add (under the line that says "127.0.0.1 localhost") to block the Mumsnet ads is 127.0.0.1 adserver.adtech.de 3. Save hosts file 4. Restart browser (you might also need to reboot the PC, I'm not sure) it works

Can you pretend I'm somebody who has never seen a computer before please?

Just speak to me as if I was a three year old

Right,

exactly where do I find my "hosts file"

right click on Start (the green button, bottom left - go to 'explore')
find C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

click to open hosts file
open in Notebook
cut and paste this to the bottom

127.0.0.1 adserver.adtech.de

save and close file
reboot

you shouldn't see any ads now (I just see one for Junior magazine but its not a problem)

Report
NadineBaggott · 03/05/2007 11:54

yes

if you right click on start you should get a list starting with open followed by 'explore'

I've just done it and it works - I didn't realise how much those ads bugged me until they weren't there!

I know

Report
GythaOggsFrog · 03/05/2007 12:07

I did it, but nothings changed.

Still being assaulted by ads for Virgin and the Financial Times, and still taking ages to load.

Was hoping it might help speed up my totally abysmal dial-up speed of 16.8kbps

Am obviously totally doozie when it comes to technology.........

Report
MamaG · 03/05/2007 12:11

gotta re boot y'know

Report
GythaOggsFrog · 03/05/2007 12:12

yes

I've just gone through it all again and the bit I copied (didn't have an option to paste) into it was there, so I must have done it right, I've added it again for good measure and will now try rebooting again......
