Oadby or Groby

Hello. Just looking for some views. We are looking to relocate to Leicester early next year with work. We have a 5 year old son so need to be in an area with good schools. Work involves travel to Nottingham, coalville, derby or birmingham. Torn in our decision. We like Oadby for the schools but are concerned that the travel would add an extra half hour each way if travelling to birmingham? Groby is lovely, but the schools are limited and some have already stated no space. Any experiences for travel from Oadby would be very much appreciated. Thanks..

Don't really know Groby, but I think you get more for your money round there than Oadby, which is expensive for Leicester, due to everyone wanting to move there for the schools. We're trying to move to Oadby from Wigston but the difference in house prices is making it tricky. How much will the difference in commuting time impact on your family life? For us, being within 15 minutes of DH's work is invaluable and we wouldn't move far from his job unless we had to as it's great having him around to help with the kids and it means a better work-life balance.

A lot of the University halls are in Oadby- I loved living there as a student but don't imagine we were the quietest neighbours! Lot of big posh houses around though.

oops sorry for the title guys!! Blush

My job would involve travel anywhere on M1 or nottingham or Birmingham. It is essential to not be too far from motorway..How long can it take from Oadby to M1 at peak hours?

Hi, I know the areas quite well and I would go to Oadby, great schools. The Beauchamp Academy ( I know not yet, but it comes round soon! ) is the best in the county and one of the best in the country. House prices are varied, smaller 3bed houses are around the national average, then of course you can go as high as you want, some over a million. The A6 runs through Oadby and is a 10 min bus ride into the city, passing the train station on the way. As your children get older, it is a cheap taxi ride home at night. You are also between the LRI and General hospitals, should you need them. Supermarkets on the A6 are Asda, Waitrose and Sainsbugs!
We lived a bit nearer the city, in Stoneygate, but over the years DH commuted to Birmingham, Nottingham and London, both by car and train. None were a problem. Sorry to be so long winded, but hope it helps.

I grew up in Groby - never thought I'd see it on here! I moved away nearly 30 years ago though, would be intrigued to see what it's like now. Former Elizabeth Woodville PS girl.

Oadby to the M1 is 10-15 minutes on a good run off peak. Peak time at least half an hour, often more. A section of the outer ring road between Fosse Park and the Pork Pie roundabout just crawls along.

Thanks guys. That is very useful information. JT05 thanks Schools are the main attraction to Oadby..Just have to tell my work not to send me to Birmingham..hehe..Other places I might be working might be ok with drop offs and pick ups like wigston, nottingham, Ashby, coalville. Its birmingham that's going to cause me some issues! Might have to just bite the bullet I guess for schools.

The schools aren't all that in oadby.

Really? 4 Outstanding Primary Schools, 2 Outstanding Secondary Scools and one Good secondary school, seems OK in my book!
Part of the reason the houses are so popular with families.

Both are just 'OK' areas. I'd go with Kirkby muxloe - close to m1, nicer feel. Oadby is not very pretty and groby v bland

Oadby caters mostly for Asians now as it is now 90 percent Asian, not that this is an issue, but they are the ones buying the houses as the schools are more suitable mostly Asian teachers etc. regarding the schools I know of loads and loads of seperate bullying incidents etc etc at all of the schools. The last time a family member went to oadby she was spat on by some teenagers fucking vile. This is coming from someone more or less born and raised there. Another family member quite and respectable was out at a pub in oadby and got beaten up by a group of Asian lads for being white, he was in hospital for a week! I could go on, oadby has gone downhill. All of us have moved from there now to a nice village.

I would probably go for Oadby. Beauchamp College is a good school ( they are sponsoring my kids school which was in special measures). I agree with others that on a bad day it could take some time to get from Oadby to the M1. Have you considered other areas closer to the M1 perhaps north of Leicester like Rothley, Quorn or Mountsorrel, all not bad villages with good bus routes to Leicester and Loughborough.

Regina - I have also heard Beauchamp has problems with drugs, not sure how true it is but heard from a reputable colleague who's kids went there. It's probably no worse than anywhere else!!

Groby nice but so are lots of bits of the west side that would make for good commuting.
Narborough, south Leicestershire villages such as countesthorpe, broughton astley and around are very nice and you'll get a much bigger house than in oadby.
Primary schools all good as are most of the state secondaries.
Minimal crime, nice atmosphere.

Ps the ring road is absolutely awful and your commute would be utterly miserable just getting to the m1 from oadby.
If you're rich, look at Knighton.

Nan0. Surely Knighton wouldn't be much better for getting to the M1?

Oadby of the two. But i agree with Connie, Kirby Muxloe is worth a look.
