It's been like this in Scotland for a few years now. Fixed spring holiday and then the Easter weekend as well.

Yes, we have the same. What on earth is that about!? It'll make our lives very complicated!

We had this a couple of years ago when they
had the Friday and Monday off for Easter,
then went back to school for
three and a half days before breaking up
for the 'Easter' holidays. Guess how much
work they got done!

It is because Easter is so very early this year.

They feel that they have to have the Easter holiday later (to stop the summer term being horribly long). But at the same time, they feel that they have to give the kids Good Friday and Easter monday

Yeah, we're having just the bank holiday easter days, then couple of weeks in april and then 2 weeks instead of one at May halfterm... which sounds like a much better idea than having a lot of time off in chilly March just because thats when a religious 'movable feast' happens to fall.

Very stop/start. It must mess up the 'flow' of lessons.

Ahh MB, that explains it! So it's a one off? (well depending on the Easter dates next year?)

I think there will be a mass exodus of kids on the three-day hub between the holidays, with people taking the opportunity to go off to Disneyworld etc.

I wonder if the schools will pre-empt people's plans with a "don't even think about it" type of letter?

There are 3 different school holiday patterns next Easter:

  1. the 2 weeks either side of Easter weekend
  2. from Good Friday for 2 weeks
  3. Easter weekend then Mon 7 - Fri 18 April.

I work for a holiday cottage company and the entire period from Fri 14/3 - Fri 18/4 is restricted to full weeks only and charged at top rate

I've just checked and our school have a week off either side of Easter. That means the spring term is only 9 weeks long, split into 5 and 4 weeks. The summer term though is 15 weeks long!! Split into 8 and 7 weeks, I'm not sure they will manage such a long term.

Report
WendyWeber · 27/11/2007 13:16

It's the same length as the autumn term though, angelstar, only with better weather. They'll manage

Ooooh, just discovered I'm wrong about the full 5 weeks being charged at top price - the week before Easter isn't, so any of you who break up Fri 14/3 can have a cheap holiday that week!

Glasgow's holidays are now permanently set as "the first two full weeks in April" - hence next year they are from the 7th to the 18th April. If Easter falls outwith that period, we then get a long weekend then too (Good Friday and Easter Monday). Those "extra" means that school then has to start 2 days earlier in August.

bobsmum · 27/11/2007 13:47

Ours is the same in Stirlingshire PB.

Always the first full 2 weeks in April starting on the first Monday.

southeastastra · 27/11/2007 13:56

are all these holiday dates done by county councils? we have to arranged dates for playschemes.

Report
prettybird · 27/11/2007 13:59

Waht - you mean acknwledging that we are back at school in August and finish at the end of June?! ]

Steady on PB that's going a bit too far

AbbyMN said it will be up on the BIg Issues section by the end of tomorrow at the latest - watch this/that space!

Yes, sea, it's entirely up to the LEA - leading to anomalies such as Leics having the 2 weeks either side of Easter but Rutland (which is virtually part of Leics, but does have its own LEA) having Easter weekend and then the 2 weeks in April, so any playschemes which overlap county boundaries could have problems
