Pregnancy

pregnant after a molar...possibly..

i was due my AF thursday last week. didn't come. did a pregnancy test this morning, very clear positive came up straight away.

however..i had a molar pregnancy which i had d&c for back in september. first lot of test results were done december, came back borderline ok. december then came back all ok. since then i've been all fine and down to fortnightly testing.

my reading is not nil though..consultant showed me it's down to 30 ish in urine, while blood is at 1 or 2. she says this is classed as normal. my specialist in sheffield also says this is all fine and normal. do normal everyday women go round with this sort of level or would they show nil?

sooooo, would the pregnancy test show positive anyway with a 30ish level? or am i pregnant? or does it depend on the sensitivity of the test? i used first response. you molar ladies will know what i mean!!

The first response tests are very sensitive. I think officially they test at about 10, but unofficially they can detect at about 5 - at least that's what I read on the internet somewhere. I'm pretty sure that most women would not come up a positive on this test unless they were pregnant.

However, this does not necessarily mean that you are not pregnant. You might well be, particularly if you are late. Not sure what to recommend really. Maybe you could wait a bit and then try one of those conception predictor tests. They will give you an idea of how much hcg is in your urine and will tell you how many weeks pregnant you are. If it comes up as 2 - 3 week pregnant (i.e. 2 - 3 weeks post conception), you can be pretty sure that your hcg levels are a lot higher than 30.

Good luck!

Ruddynorah, can you phone through to Sheffield? Or will no-one be around until Mon? They might have a clearer idea, and should definately want you to send in a sample to confirm what is going on.

I'm afraid that I never did a pregnancy test when I was still having my levels measured, so i don't know how sensitive they are.

I keep my fingers crossed for you that your positive is a positive (IYKWIM!)

Ruddynorah, so sorry to hear that you have gone through a molar pregnancy. Most of the normal ie not ultra-sensitive tests will give a positive result at 15. It is still possible that you are pregnant though. The only way to tell AFAIK is to have a quantitative blood test and then have it repeated 48 hours later. The first result would show if your levels have increased from your levels in december but the second one should be approx double the level of the first one if you are pregnant and it is continuing normally. I guess that the other thing they would want to check is that the hormone levels aren't wildly increasing.

There will definitely be people around in Sheffield (I know, from experience). Had you been given the OK to start ttc?

Just to reassure you, because of past mp I got an early scan (6wks) and another at 9wks just to check everything was OK...

haven't read other posts, norah, soz but when i had my ectopics, ruddy, they wanted me to be under 10 to count as not pregnant. i know some tests can pick up around 25. sorry if that's not the news you want, poppet.

i've emailed the macmillan nurse at sheffield, but she probably won't be back til monday. the 30 reading was actually beginning of january, it will be less than that now. unless of course i haven't come on because the mole has grown.

the erpc was in september, first results borderline and since then normal. so i can count 6 months from erpc which takes us to march, so now ish.

my next piss pot test to sheffield is due next week so i guess that will be quite telling anyway plus will see what my nurse says.

no not yet. have sent this fortnights piss pot anyway today so should hear if something's 'wrong' pretty quick anyway. the nurse does normally mail me back within an hour or so so maybe she's on a day off.

no period yet though, so it's now 5 days late...

Can your Gp not arrange for a couple of HCG bloods 48 hrs apart? In normal pregnancy it should double (roughly) every 2 days and it would give you a definite answer relatively swiftly. We do that kind of thing all the time for woman with a past history of recurring miscarriage/ectopic preg/mole.

V best of luck! I hope congratulations are soon in order...

well....

macmillan nurse emailed me back just now. she says my results over the last couple months would have not showed up positive on a preg test. so the fact this one shows positive..and not even a faint positive..means i am probably pregnant. however..it could of course also mean the mole is growing back.

she'll test my sample as normal and let me know..

Did she say when you'll get the results or how they are planning to confirm that you are pg and that the mole isn't growing back? I hope that they don't leave you hanging on for long.

she just said the last lot of results wouldn't have showed a positive on a test, so they must have dropped off a lot lower than the 30 it was when i last saw the hospital consultant in february, when the most recent results were january's.

she then said now i'm on fortnightly testing i just need to send the next one off asap..which i already did.. and she'll test accordingly.

so i just wait. thing is, i'm 6 days late now..and my normal cycle is 30 days, so i'm way over really. sometimes it's only 28 days.
