Runny eggs and camembert - mmmmmmm....Is it really that bad?

I'm sure I had a few runny eggs last time around and probably cheese as well, although otherwise I was fairly careful.

How likely is it that anyone gets listeria these days from shop bought eggs and pasteurised cheese? Think it's one of those over-cautious warnings or am I being being naughty?

You don't catch listeria from runny eggs. It's Salmonella you might, might catch from runny eggs.

Personally, I bought free range lion marked eggs (lion marked eggs come from vaccinated hens) and ate them runny. With hot buttered toast to dippy into them.

I'm not allowed to advocate this because other people come and sniff at me about "Oh, it's only 9 months, could you not wait for nine months, I mean it's the tiniest of risks, yes, but for the health of your Baaby....!!!!" etc wahwahwah.

Always reminds me of that woman on the Simpsons who bleats "Won't somebody think of the children?"

See, there's the thing - eggs are rubbish if you can't dip 'em, and they're so good for you...

I do eat runny eggs(40+3 today) - same as coldtits, lion marked ones.
Only time I've had food poisoning whilst pg, was a couple of months ago when I ate some dodgy egg mayo sarnies at a buffet. Was over it in 48 hours, very unpleasent but baby survived fine - don't think it cared very much for my constant vomiting!
As for the Advocaat - the brandy would have killed any bacteria in the eggs!
Soft french cheeses should be avoided unless they are either pasteurised or cooked - but certainly most of these cheeses you get in supermarkets will be pasteurised.

cooked is fine, I think, it kills the gribleys.

I'm also careful about home made mayonnaise and home made chocolate mousse as a few friends of mine have chickens in their gardens and use these eggs, which aren't pastuerised.

I did have one friend take offence at me refusing her home made chocolate mousse, she insisted that her hens are healthy, but couldn't tell me whether they are vaccinated or not

I ate brie and grape baguettes at work when pregnant with ds as didn't know I shouldn't then. This time round I'm being careful but I'm desperate for the brie dh has bought (same as the pate but I know that ones a no no). It doesn't say pasturised but it was bought from a big supermarket - would it actually say pasturised on it if it was?

Btw BOHO, I had bacon and egg rolls yesterday for breakfast, eggs were carefully fried but still runny (lion mark), yum yum

Oh good, glad it's not just me disregarding all this stuff!

Franny, am only about 5-6 weeks -ish. Am also eating peanut butter now and again. I did last time too and DS is fine. I did read the other day that some exposure to peanuts before the baby is born is good, but in truth, I don't think anyone really knows at all! All things in moderation I reck. I bet in France they're pissed every day and chowing down on pate and allsorts...

This will give you a decent idea about what cheeses are safe to eat when pregnant - I'm off to buy boursin and philadelphia ASAP . I'm sure that last time I was preggers the boursin package stated it was pasteurised and this time round it doesn't .

Listeria lurks in all sorts of places and foodstuffs and can be fatal to unborn babies but it is still a pretty rare infection despite this.

I've eaten shellfish throughout each of my pregnancies - very naughty

If you eat runny lion marked eggs they recommmend you keep them in the fridge and eat them before the best before date just to be extra safe.

Oh look, all my favourite cheeses:

brie, blue brie, camembert, Danish blue, dolcelatte, gorgonzola, roquefort, stilton.

All evil.

Well I am eating peanuts like they are going out of fashion - it's all I am craving at the moment! I have hayfever too so I think that is (or used to be) a no no

But I think now on peanut butter and peanuts, the latest advice I heard was that eating them during pregnancy might actually reduce chances of a nut allergy(??)

Report
daisynova · 27/12/2007 12:03

The whole nut issue has been a running argument with my husband. He says I should eat them and I say I shouldn't. My saving grace is that the smell of peanuts is awful to me just now so couldn't eat them if I tried.

As for runny eggs, it's the only way to have them and as long as you cook them well then you should be ok. When I am out and about though I always ask for the eggs to be well done - gets some funny looks but I can't be sure what eggs they are using.

Another runny-egg eater here. I've also been having the odd nibble of stilton here and there, on the grounds that, having read around the risks myself, much of the "advice" seems to me to be the teensiest bit hysterical. So far, no salmonella or listeria.

The peanut thing has flipped on its head in the 28 weeks I've been up the duff, from "don't eat them or you'll give your child a life-threatening allergy" to "do eat them or you'll give your child a life-threatening allergy". Another reason why I am reading the science and trusting my own judgment rather than avoiding everything for fear of death/havoc/war/etc

Well I don't like runny eggs even when I'm not pg, but have been scarfing brie and peanuts throughout this pregnancy. It's not my fault they're so delicious.

Well, I ate peanuts once during my first pregnancy and ds has a peanut allergy (diagnosed at 8 mo). Thing is, nobody can tell me if he would have been less likely to have it if I had not eaten any peanuts, or if I had eaten more .

This pregnancy - no peanuts/any nuts for me. But there isn't any research to back up this decision, or the contrary for that matter. Its just a personal choice.

Most kids do not have nut allergy whether or not their mums eat nuts, and kids with the allergy can have mums who avoided nuts in pregnancy or ones who ate them all the time. Same as with other allergies, I reckon.

Hi all, my thing is mayo, i love mayo - does anyone eat mayo whilst pregnant? x

There is a test you can have done, to determine whether you have a resistance to the problematic elements of cheeses, cured meats etc. I think you can ask your doctor for it.

You'll all think twice when your babies come out mutants with three heads!!

I nicknamed the bump Peanut as its the one thing I've been told to avoid, and it looks like one on the 6wk scan. Gotta have a sense of irony.

I've gotta say, I am dying for a runny egg - maybe I will succumb seeing as it doesn't seem to have been a problem for anyone yet. It's either that or a lobotomy....

SazzaK · 27/12/2007 20:38

I thought they'd now admitted they had cocked up on the guidelines on peanuts, and actually there are fewer allergies in countries where the pregnant mum routinely eats peanuts?

Report
wb · 28/12/2007 10:55

Not as simple as that Sazzak, unfortunately. But its true that avoiding peanuts doesn't guarantee that your lo will not have peanut allergy.

VictorianSqualor · 28/12/2007 11:00

The only time I like eggs is when I'm pregnant, I never eat them when I'm not but I get desperate for a fried egg when I am, and it has to have a runny yoke.
