Thrush in Pregnancy?

Hi all.

This may be a little TMI but for the past couple of days, I've been itching like crazy down there. As a result, the area is sore, swollen, raw and I am struggling to sleep at night. I have a young DS to look after and I'm currently 29 weeks pregnant. I'm pretty sure it's thrush. Is there anything I can use to get rid of the itching sensation? I've tried yoghurt with no luck. I've seen a few creams etc in pharmacies, some of which say they're okay to use during pregnancy but I'm a little sceptical.

I can't see the doctor until Monday, so is there anything which could help me make it through the weekend. My DS is still waking during the night, so this along with not being able to sleep in between due to constant soreness/itching is making me exhausted.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I had recurring bouts of thrush in pregnancy due to hormonal changes - it's an absolute nightmare, especially as bump gets bigger and it becomes more difficult to reach down there!! I always used Canesten gel pessaries together with the cream. No problems at all.

I had this too and the canes tan pessaries are fine to use while pregnant.

It's so common I was prescribed a job lot of them in one go.

Have the pessaries, they are safe in pregnancy and it's far better than suffering.

Canesten even!

Used the pessary here too when the cream wouldn't clear it.

Did you eat the yogurt with live cultures in. I had thrush a few weeks ago and was sceptical at first. First two days nothing changed. By the third day it was almost better. Day 4 gone. I did eat a whole large pot a day!

Yuk! Thrush in pregnancy is awful. I've had it so many times. I'm pregnant for the third time and I've been plagued with it again!

Canesten Pessery and Cream def. safe to use, though some pharmacies will only give it to pregnant women with a prescription. (I send in a friend!)

I've also used a tampon with a dozen drops of tea tree on the tip. Neutralises the PH level and settles everything down.

Avoiding sugar and bread helps too and I've been taking grapefruit seed extract, which I must admit has definitely helped.

Good luck.

I read on here that coal soap works. Should be able to get it from tesco or similar. Not tried it myself tho

Just call the out of hours GP or the midwife unit. Get it sorted ASAP. It's exhausting

Thanks everyone for the advice Smile. I will try all of the suggestions and see if it eases any, if not I'm going to have to see someone about it asap. It's driving me crazy!

I had it FOUR times during pregnancy! You can be prone to it apparently.

It's also a marker for Group B strep (according to my MW) so make sure you get tested. I did at 24 weeks and again at 37.

Oh, the pessary works fine but a pharmacist won't sell it to a pregnant woman, it has to be prescribed.

God yes - canesten - I suffered with it the whole time - horrible.

Pessary and cream to clear it but then I find taking Acidophilus capsules from the health food shop keep it at bay. They're basically the good bacteria found in live yogurt but in concentrated form.

As others have said get someone to get you the canesten pessary and cream. In fact DH bought it off the shelf in Tesco last time IIRC. I think it was about £12.00 but I'd have paid twice that rather than wait to see a GP for a prescription!

I've had it twice now it is truly horrible - I sympathise OP Flowers

DP has gone out and bought home canesbalance which comes with individual tubes. Is this the right stuff? He said he didn't know which to get, so he just bought this.

Canesbalance is for bacterial vaginosis, not thrush. Send him back out!

kamillaw · 15/01/2016 21:35

Not sure if that's not a preventative one? What does the canesten website say? Didn't know that about group B strep?

Report
magpie17 · 15/01/2016 21:45

I didn't know about the group B strep thing either, apparently recurring thrush in pg can be indicative of it. My GP did my first test and the MW did the second, both were negative though.

DP has gone back out (he offered, honest!) and I've sent him a picture of the canesten pessary from their website. Bless him, he was trying to help and he felt bad when he got home and I told him that he had bought the wrong sort.

Make sure he doesn't tell them it's for a pregnant woman - my DH did a X they wouldn't sell it!

When pregnant you're told to insert the pessary with your finger not the applicator. If it doesn't go use another one in a couple of days. My gp prescribed me 3 pessaries and told me to use them on consecutive days as nothing would shift it.

I’ve had the 500mg pessary and a course of antibiotics prescribed by the maternity ward and it seemed to be working, however now my course has ended it has flared back up. I’m 19 weeks and I struggled to get the pessary inside in the first place.

@Sianmrtn how many pessary did you use? I was surprised when my doctor prescribed me with 7 to use 1 daily with the cream

Report
Sianmrtn · 05/08/2020 20:36

@Sazzy312 the doctor only gave me 1 x 500mg and then the antibiotics 3 x a day for 5 days. It went for all of a day and came back straight away

Sazzy312 · 05/08/2020 20:39

@Sianmrtn Oh thats a shame I got 7 500mg and cream ive only done 5 pessarys as feel like thats enough although it still feels a bit sore, usually I only use 1 500mg when not pregnant and it goes straight away, hormones are a bugger, are you gonna go back to docs?
