So I have just got up to make breakfast this morning feeling absolutely fine, I have had a slight cold this last week but nothing major.
Now I coughed as i lent over to put the kettle on to my shock a fair bit of water came out, now I'm not talking a lot at all more like a big trickle.. This is my first baby and I have no idea what to expect when my waters break in fact I have been quite nieave in thinking it's never going to happen! Now my parter had literally walked out of the door for work when this happened?!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to run a risk of infection nor do I want to call the midwife and my partner if I have just peed myself.Blush

Call your midwife. They'll be able to advise. You won't need to go in for 24 hours even if it is waters and you may well get some contractions by then anyway. Good luck!!

Now I'm panicking that everything I feel is a contraction, knowing my luck I have peed myself and nothing more! It was very very strange as although I didn't need a wee, I was able to stop the water pretty much right away! I do have a slight dull back ache but this is very normal for me in the morning! Is there any other signs I should look for aswell?
Will try to call the midwife now!

My waters went like this & I had no idea what was going on. You need to phone your midwife or your hospital delivery unit. I didn't start getting contractions until 8 or 9 hours later but had my DC within 24hrs. I think I was also 39+5 too randomly! Good luck!

My midwife advises that you go to the maternity ward within two hours of waters breaking, but that's in France.

I'd call her to check what to do and call your husband!

Good luck!

Oh no im really not prepared! I found out i was expecting at 25 weeks + 6 Days! Hence why I've been in a state of mind this won't happen anytime soon!! I will call them and see what they say!
I only saw the midwife on Saturday and she said baby seems happy and predicted a late one! Hmm

Just seen your update. Have you got any waterproof sheets / continence sheets? I found them really useful for sitting on whilst my waters were trickling like this. Also useful for journey to hospital. Although I didn't have to go in to hospital to have the baby immediately, IYSWIM, they did want me in to get checked to make sure waters were clear & no signs of distress. I went home after examination, told to keep active, and wait for contractions to start. They booked me in for an induction at 8am the following day as my local hospital policy is to induce within 24hrs. Some hospitals leave it longer.

Yes, definitely call your midwife - and if you need to wait for a call back, then I'd potter around getting stuff together for when you need to go in.

I don't tend to go into "proper" labour until after my waters break, so you may find that your contractions kick in soon.

The other thing that was suggested to me at one stage when I thought my waters had gone was to lie down for a while and then stand up - if it is your waters you might get a small gush when you stand up.

Good luck :)

Mine did say 48 hours at my appointment on Saturday. That's a point the water was very clear so it can't of been urine! Slight relief there. Well may just be time to prepare myself for this little one to come, just to check aswell for anyone who knows baby movements should all be normal? My little lady is very active and she has been no different this morning. I shouldn't expect her to slow down at all? X

Give the fluid a sniff! Amniotic fluid smells quite different from wee. And call your midwife, when mine went I was asked to go to hospital to be checked. When I arrived I was 5cm dilated so I didn't even get sent home!

Live birth thread!

I think you just need to make your way to wherever you are due to give birth.

In my experience they will admit you as soon as your waters have broken. And that is how they often go, not one great gush as is often thought.

With my youngest my waters broke, I called the hospital and luckily they told me to come in despite having no contractions. The contractions started 2hrs after my waters broke and he was born 2hrs after that.

Same for me with waters breaking. In at 9am. Baby out by 11am.

When my waters broke I wasn't able to stop it like I can with a wee (but it was more obvious for me because I was already sat on the loo and had just done a wee)!

Give your midwife a call and she'll advise of next steps. In our area the hospital like you to visit for them to confirm that its waters and not pee. Then depending on if you are contracting/dilated you get sent home for 24 hours then back the following day for induction. Each area is different in their approach though.

Good luck Smile

When mine broke (38+5) I called and they asked me to go in to be checked over, went in, was then sent home until everything ramped up a bit which was much sooner than they anticipated.

DS was born 11 hours and 3 minutes after they went. Good luck OP!

Agree sniff and feel waters smell very different and are slightly sticky.

DO NOT allow them to leave you 48 hours with broken waters without being swabbed for group b strep or other infections. My Dsis was left 48 hours and we lost my nephew to group b meningitis. That is NOT to worry you. My DD3 was also born with it but because we were then aware she was given ABs and is healthy and bouncy at 11m.

Good luck! Xx

So I calle the midwife, waters have definitely gone!!! They said to stay at home stay relaxed eat and drink etc! Having slight pains in back and stomach, like severe period pains so hopefully baby will be out soon although I know so much can change !! Baby is kicking about and seems to be none the wiser she's coming into the world.
I love how they have told me to relax when I'm so close to giving birth!
Any advice on if this sounds like contractions ? (Baby number one and didn't have the pleasure of braxton hicks)
So I have a period pain back ache probably 4/10 on the pain scale
But I keep getting a shooting pain in my stomach which honestly feels like a solid 7/10 on the pain scale! I'm worried I dno what to expect x

My waters broke first with both of mine. I started with contractions straight away and the first was born 31hrs later, second 38hrs later. With my first I had major, intense 2 minute long contractions from the beginning. There was no doubting that's what they were. Second time round, there was no pain but I knew I was having contractions because the pressure/tightening was coming in waves. Plus, I went in for some monitoring and they were registering as strong, regular minute long contractions (still not painful at all).

Have they checked it was your waters or have you lost more?

If I were you, I'd ignore any tightenings and pains as far as possible. Make sure everything's ready, try and get some rest, stay hydrated, have regular snacks and pretend it's not happening. If it IS happening, chances are you'll become aware of it. If there is a pattern and you can time it and it looks like you're contracting regularly, I'd call your partner home. If it's just sporadic slight aches and pressure, I'd relax a bit. Is your partner easy to get in touch with? How far away?

He's about 20 mins away he's an engineer so he's always in the van and is able to be here right away. I am getting strong pains about 15 mins apart lasting about 30 seconds it's weird I only feel comfortable whilst sat on the loo!
And yes when I explained midwife agreed I've lost a lot of waterShock

20 mins apart lasting 30 seconds is still very early stages. Call your hospital when they get to 3 mins apart and regular.

Try and keep moving as that will help!

Have a bath and some paracetamol and try and relax. I know it's hard Confused

Have you lost more water? You described 'not a lot, a big trickle' in your op. Sometimes it's possible to have a leak in your waters but them not actually rupture. Sometimes it's possible to wee and it seem like your waters. Regardless, it sounds like very early labour has started if you're seeing a regular pattern to the pains.

It's different for everybody but when mine broke I knew it was my waters as it was a LOT, obviously coming from around the baby and I had no control but it did continue to leak fairly constantly for the first 12hrs of labour both times, particularly when I stood up. Until it was all gone I suppose.

It is soooo hard to relax but do try. Have a soak in the bath. Once your out do whatever is comfortable and potter about getting your stuff together. It may still be a while yet or it may happen quite quickly. I have no experience of waters breaking like this all 3 went in active labour ds2 during pushing. Midwife thought he was coming out with them intact.
It is such a nerve wracking it exciting time. Call someone for company if you like it can be a big help having someone to take yourind off it in the early stages.
The pain your having definitely sounds like early labour though. Masses of good luck. And just remember you'll be holding that baby in no time at all now. SmileFlowers

Ahh best of luck Cgow!

Don't worry, it will gradually increase so you won't feel like it suddenly comes on. Keep us posted!

Both times my waters went (38+1 and 37+6) i went into hospital and was checked out. Both times they sent me home with instructions that I was to return in 36 hours to be induced if I hadn't gone into labour naturally. I did with DS1 and he arrived 36 hours later, I didn't with DS2 and he arrived after induction 48 hours later. With DS2 i even had a whole day to frantically nest (clean house, clean oven, clean car - inside and out, food for the week sorts, arrangements made for DS1 whereabouts for the next 72 hours) so don't panic about this being imminent just yet!
