Pork pies are quite greasy and toms very acidic and Pom Bears salty!
I do sympathise tho, I had horrendous heartburn. You can get stronger stuff from the GP

Snack pork pies are incredibly high fat. They set my husband off with a gall bladder attack once.

Apart from that and if you're being careful about not eating late and not lying down too soon after eating you should ask your gp for ranitidine. It's like gaviscon but ten times better. You can get something similar over the counter I think but as you're pregnant you should go to gp.

Last time I was pg my midwife told me to send my husband to buy one of every type of heartburn remedy and see which one worked as the prescribed Gaviscon did nothing. It turns out Fruity Tums are the only ones that work for me.

Send your DH to a 24 hour Tesco!

You need some rabitidine.

Try banana or strawberry flavoured milk. M&S does it by the litre (and stock it in those BP petrol stations with a wee M&S). It has worked a dream for the 4 women I recommended it to after someone recommended it to me.

Ranitidine (Zantac) are a miracle tablet.
Fine to take after first trimester.

Go to your doctor and ask for omeprazole - there is no need to suffer with heartburn during pregnancy as there are medications which you can take.

Yes ranitidine. I had heartburn/reflux very badly when pregnant with my DD and I used to take ranitidine and Gaviscon together. On the plus side it goes away very soon after the baby is born. Drinking milk also helps.

Are you sure it is heartburn?

www.preeclampsia.org/health-information/sign-symptoms

Sometimes preeclampsia stomach pain can be mistaken for severe heartburn.

If you're stuck a vanilla milkshake helps.

I'm with you on this, gaviscon only works for me about 50% of the time, even water is giving me heartburn at the moment so I totally feel your pain! When gaviscon not working for me I find a small bowl of plain natural yogurt or a big glass of really cold milk helps quite a lot!

Feel better xx

Get some Zantac prescribed. I had heartburn with each of my pregnancy's which eased with gaviscon. With the last one it was so severe I was vomiting daily right the way through. Zantac and gaviscon and chewing gum in the middle.

Zantac ALL THE WAY! I'm on 150mg 2x a day.

I had the gaviscon advanced which was a lot better.

I've got omeprazole from the GP.

Another vote for Ranitidine. You can get it anywhere and don't actually have to go to a doctor for it.

Generic ranitidine is dirt cheap in Sainsbury's and Wilkinson's, just get their own brand version.

Pastry, crisps and tomatoes would be my top three heartburn triggers...... pork pie, and pom bear are really high fat and tomatoes really acidic. The Gaviscon liquid is much better than the tablets but I have to guzzle loads of it. Tesco sell half litre bottles!

Just to remind everyone to get their gaviscon through their doctor as you don't pay for prescriptions remember and gaviscon isn't cheap!!

Omeprazole or ranitidine. Both can be bought OTT. Ranitidine is faster acting in my experience.

myusernameis · 28/06/2014 00:03

I would stay off the tomatoes too if I were you.

Omeprazole is the only thing that worked for me. It's the only medication that actually inhibits the problem rather than addressing the symptoms.

You can buy it iver the counter - it's called zanprol. It's not meant (like most medicines) to be taken whilst pregnant whilst not under doc supervision. However, it is safe. Rather than getting into an argument with the pharmacist, send DH to buy it!

It can sometimes take up to 24 hours to fully kick on so get some ranitidine (losec) to tide you over

I used omeprazole in pregnancy and it was a lifesaver. Don't eat tomatoes, they're very acidic and will make the problem worse!

Report
SoonToBeSix · 28/06/2014 00:34

Definitely omeprazole but you have take it for a few days before it works. You can also take ranitidine two x 75 mg tablets for the first few days.
